(And it will be the final film in this series, because even if it does better than KotM it won't be enough for Legendary to pay Toho to extend the license). |

I think they will certainly put a hold on future plans for the universe until that comes out (honestly it might have wound up being canceled had it not gone into production before this film released), but if that’s a surprise hit, they will probably continue with a focus on Kong. But yeah, very real chance the Monsterverse ends there, as I’ve said only the MCU and the Conjuring Universe seem to have been successful cinematic universes, with everyone else either canceling their universe or dramatically changing course.

A 70%+ drop seems likely (losing premium screens, much more divisive WOM than the last movie, etc)

The last film had very divisive WOM as well. But it dropped over 66% in its second weekend, so I think a similar or even worse drop this time around is possible. If we assume a $47 million opening (I tend to think other studios estimates are more likely than WB’s but we’ll know tomorrow), and it struggles just a bit more than with legs than the first film, it won’t even hit $100 million domestic as that barely got to $200 million off a $93 million opening

So when you consider that Batman and Superman were supposed to be the most popular superheroes of all time, it was still a relative disappointment. And it was also a movie that a lot of people were disappointed by, just in terms of what it did with the story and the characters. I don't think very many people look back at it fondly now. It was also a weak foundation on which to try to build a DCU that could match the BO prowess of the MCU, and clearly it failed at that. |
