That’s with the original hard slipcover I’m guessing? I didn’t buy the set until the cheaper re-print with the flimsy slipcover.

What source do we have that the Lowry ALIENS work done in 2010 was only 2K? Because this article re: Lowry from 2004 says they were doing most of their work in 4K:

Scanned at 4K, yes. Restored at 4K, not always. A former director of operations at Lowry https://www.linkedin.com/in/ryan-gomez-40520a39 had this to say in his LinkedIn profile:

"4K Restoration of Titanic - I supervised the project which was the first successfully executed end-to-end application of the "Lowry Process" on 4K uncompressed images."

"Some of the more notable projects completed during my tenure are Avatar, Prometheus, The Amazing Spiderman, The Social Network, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. The Image Processing team completed 4K restorations of Titanic and 2K restorations of The Star Wars Trilogy, Alien, Aliens, Terminator, The Abyss and True Lies."

I got that scratch from my recently deceased pooch! RIP Nina. You would've hated the 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray of Aliens (James Cameron, 1986).

Because of the lower resolution and the fake grain on the bluray, fans seem to think it looks better, but it doesn't. The fake grain masks the problems we can see on the 4K. Cameron said himself back in the day when the quadrilogy came out, that they had to completly scrub it for grain and that they added a very very fine layer of fake grain on top of the scrubbed remaster. There isn't more visible detail on the BD.

To the naked eye the bluray looks good I think. The 4K's biggest mistake is the AI sharpening. Some scenes looks great and some scenes look awful. But I don't think it's the disaster some people make it to be.

So if the Blu-ray was also a scrub/fake grain job, then realistically the best quality version of the film would likely be some fanmade 35mm preservation project or something? That's sad.

Nope, I had the cheaper version. It was printed the same way and began flaking off shortly after I got it.

Yes, I believe so.

I didn't see it in theaters when it was released back in 86, but I have heard from several fans that it was very noise looking. The VHS was too. So when the bluray came around, I was pleasently surprised how clean and sharp it looked. And the 4K is problematic, but it's simply not as bad as some people says it is.

It's definitely not the disaster it has been portrayed as being. The two things (liking the BD, hating the 4K) don't comply w/ simple logic. But, we do need to wait and see the physical copy.

I did see it in the theater in '86... but I was also 5 years old, so I'm not even gonna try to pretend to remember how grainy it was or wasn't. I just remember being terrified and LOVING it. I'm most likely going to be sticking with the Blu-ray.

1. The quality still looks good to me.

2. The Quadrilogy boxset is still an overall amazing package and is worth the deep dive into the special features.

Like what you're going to like, but based on the comparisons we've seen, it's clear that the manipulation at work in the 4K transfer is egregious. For people who want a reasonably faithful representation of the film, it's disqualifying.

The thing is many of the fans that praise the BD now, were not as kind when it first came out on the format. It is possible to change ones mind over time though and I think that will be the case w/ the 4K too.

Not me, I was ecstatic over the Blu-ray and have praised it since release. So that's why my hype for the 4K was high before hearing about all the digital messing around with the details.

I'm happy for anyone who's standards are low enough to enjoy it in it's present 4k form. But I feel the pain of the people who find this version to be completely unwatchable much much more. I really can't imagine anyone changing their mind (in a positive way) about the 4k streaming version as it is right now.

I don't know if standards factor in here. I just think personal preference comes into play. A lot of minds are made up already based on streaming and that should never be the method we judge things off of.

I can't wait for the discs to be error free compared to streaming. After all, Silence of the Lambs was free of it's streaming errors! And we know the 4K masters for Titanic and Avatar were manipulation free on disc I'm going to post 20 times a day in every Cameron thread I'm sooooo excited I mean after all, the Aliens caps do show so much extra natural detail that definitely isn't there on the Blu guys, no way nuh uh.

I watched the BD a day after watching the 4K version on VUDU. I will be keeping the BD and watching it going forward and skipping the UHD.

I like it too, the only thing is as my tv size has grown over the years it became a little less impressive. It's still really good though.
