Does anybody have a list by chance of all of the Criterion titles that are Studio Canal?
people seem to be saying that eventually those will all be OOP due to the fact that apparently Studio Canal wants to work up those releases themselves on Blu, and then pass out distribution rights to various companies. If all that conjecture is true it would seem that "Last Year at Marienbad" would perhaps be the next Criterion blu to go OOP. Criterion probably realized--like with "The Third Man" that they had a brief window during which they could release it on bd before their rights expired. anybody have any insight onto this? |

The ranking is based from Leonard Maltin's rating from his Movie & Video Guide. Again, his ratings are certainly objectionable (I found "Chungking Express" to be a wonderful film and worthy of a 4 than his 2.5 rating) but I've been a big follower of his reviews and his yearly guide for years.
Salo is one of those very disturbing films that people are definitely going to receive differently. Hence the following reviews (from rottentomatoes.com): TVGUIDE: The result, despite moments of undeniably brilliant insight, is nearly unwatchable, extremely disturbing, and often literally nauseous. Chicago Reader: Very hard to take, but in its own way an essential work. Empire Magazine: As disturbing as it set out to be. This may not be an enjoyable experience but it is definitely an experience. Filmcritic.com: In all honesty it's a terrible, terrible experience -- but give the guy credit: It's certainly unique. Diabolique is also a 4-star suspense masterpiece that inspired Psycho, not 1.5. I understand reviews are subjective, but both of these are widely-acknowledged classics that deserve better from the holy critic of Entertainment Tonight, lol. EDIT: Maltin lists 39 Steps on his list of top 100 movies of the 20th Century, saying "Classic Hitchcock mystery with overtones of light comedy and romance, as innocent Donat is pulled into spy-ring activities. Memorable banter between Donat and Carroll, who thinks he's a criminal, set style for sophisticated dialogue for years." I don't think the 2.5 stars is accurate. If anyone catches anything that looks unusual in the ratings, please let me know. I made sure to check Salo again and he definitely did give that one his lowest rating. Last edited by kndy; 11-01-2009 at 08:23 PM. |

As far as reviews go, I've always felt that it all comes down to viewer experience. So, I kind of look at Maltin's rating for the Paul Morrissey films "Flesh for Frankenstein" and "Blood of Dracula" and wonder...why did he score it that low and why did Criterion choose those films. So, definitely makes me want to check it out for myself. But at the same time, makes me even more curious on those he rated as 4's, so I want to check out these films such as "Brief Encounter", "The Bank Dick", "Pygmalion", "Alexander Nevsky", "Rififi", "Wild Strawberries", etc. |

I am just happy they are giving us this opportunity to get replacements. They could of went ahead and made us have cardboard cases. There isn't one reason why they should help us out like this, that is why they are who they are. |

In my opinion, I hate the blue cases. I would like all blu-rays to have the clear cases like what Criterion is doing. I always loved the clear dvd cases, and used them all the time when I bought dvds, I would switch the cases to clear. I think the only reason they are doing that, is to have the people who don't know what Blu-rays are figure out what is Blu-ray and what is DVD. I have a feeling when/if DVD dies out and Blu-ray becomes the next dvd, they will get rid of the blue cases. |
