Thanks for the warning. I'll need to watch those ASAP. I can't say that I'm sorry about canceling my netflix subscription.

I 'm new to the Criterion blu-ray party, bought Broadcast News, Blow Out and Fish Tank. When Amazon had that great sale a while back.

Prior to that, Sporloos was the only one I owned.

Plan to get a few more from B&N.com, they have a nice sale right now.

Actually you got 10% off the price after the 50% off. You, like myself paid approx. $18.00 per title. That would be reg price $39.99 minus 10% = $19.99 then 10% off that would be -$1.99 making them $18.00. 60% off would have made them $15.99. But it's still a good deal and the sale last until Aug 1, 2011 so still time to pick up some great titltes with great transfers. I still have a few tiles I want to get while it last.

Um.....no, it is definitely not something everyone should watch, even once. Kidnapped youths subjected to pedophilia, rape, sh*t eating, torture, and graphic murder by branding, scalping, cutting out eyeballs and tongues, all with a sense of voyeuristic glee and eroticism. No matter how often some people may try to justify it as art, or an important film, or a distrurbing in-you-face view of the horrors of absolute power, or a morality tale, or a warning, or however they try to wrap it into a meaningful package, Salo is one of the most loathsome and disturbing things ever committed to film. Once seen, it cannot be un-seen. It is basically snuff-film lite for the arthouse crowd.

But, hey, to each his own. If the film appeals because it is what it is and some feel the director bravely pushed the boundaries with it and therefore it has value, then by all means watch it.

What continues to baffle me is Criterion's reasons for upgrading some films ahead of others. We get Salo ahead of so many incredible movies waiting for upgrades....the Soviet Union films, the Hitchcocks, the Bergmans, Le Samourai, Picnic at Hanging Rock, etc. etc.

Ok, off my soap box....for now.

I don't know about everyone else, but that sounds like a f'n movie.

violence and eroticism will always be linked in art (well all of history actually), more-so in film. You should check out Jean Rollin's vampire films (no sh*t eating that I can think of). Most are on Netflix instant, and my fav "Requiem for a Vampire". "Fascination", while not being on Netflix, you should try to find that one too.

'Island of Lost Souls' I will be getting! I have never seen it but I love classic horror. 'Four Feathers' sounds good as well. I LOVE the cover on 'Kuroneko'.

I was hoping for some Hitchcock on Blu, atleast one of the Rock Hudson dramas Criterion has released DVD's of, etc. Maybe next time.

Do you not think the fact that Salo is one of the most talked about/Debated films in film history makes it an important film in and of itself? Whether or not you deem the film to be repulsive or unwatchable is not really the point here. In an age where 95% of films being released are instantly forgetable, I think theres something to be said for a movie that makes people talk...... But maybe thats just me trying to justify this films worth

And I am a HUGE Bergman fan (I own every movie of his that criterion has released thus far) but I think Blu Ray releases of Salo and Bergman films can coexist and this is coming from someone who is impatiently waiting for an upgrade of The Virgin Spring....! (hmmmmm..... maybe I just have something for arthouse rape/torture movies *shrugs*)

Ha! I knew this would draw out SB.

Yes, I agree vampires and violent eroticism go together like.....how did the Married With Children theme go - like a horse and carriage.

Sh*t eating.......not so much.

Sure they can coexist in the collection, but not at the rate of two or three blu upgrades a month

But Rollin's films are girl on girl vampire action. Like the later Hammer films but turned up on the nudity and violence. Jean Rollin is so underrated.

Okay your nice, so I'll tell you, it comes out October 25th. Oh and ShellOilJunior's post was fake announcements (he does it every month).

Here is this forum's link to the street dates of the real announced titles from today:
