I was amazed when I learned that too.

BTW, Network is really cheap at Amazon. Not only is it a great movie in its own right one of the extras is an hour long Robert Osborn interview with Sidney Lumet. That extra alone is almost worth the ten bucks.

Yeah, I've looked at that but I've pretty much decided I'm done sinking money into that system. I've got retail versions of PowerDVD and WinDVD. If I ever get around to setting that box up again I should be able to set one of them to Region B.

Though I have to say, an open box standalone sounds pretty good too

I picked up the Criterion of 'Sweet Smell of Success' today from Barnes N Noble. So far I have gotten 3 Criterion Blus from this sale.

Nope, none.

(If you mean the one with the bell in the soup du jour, nope, that's one's got me stymied too.)

A bell wouldn't float in soup. Who ever heard of stew du jour or oatmeal du jour?

(I shouldn't admit this but that was actually my first reaction earlier)

Aussie customs has never been a problem for the many Amazon packages I've received. Sniffer dogs aren't trained to smell out Criterion discs
Unfortunately, my package hasn't even shipped yet, because it is waiting on High and Low (I think).

B&N can still do their sale. Have Criterion's site and B&N do it at the same time.
Criterion don't deliver outside the US.

I'm from Australia so my Criterion fix would be a lot less.

They do to Canada but the shipping rates are rather insane compared to what I would get from B&N or Amazon.

I also read that Canada has some sort of import tax put on items like the CC discs that you get in the mail, we are lucky here on Austalia - we don't have that hassle do deal with.

A poplular business man here who owns many stores that also sell electrical stuff wanted to impose such a tax here, he wasn't a very popular man for the next few weeks. Lots of nasty emails for him.

peace

The import tax is less than the Duty we'd have to pay going through customs. Amazon USA charges it, and only on stuff over 50 bucks. Amazon UK doesn't charge it or any sort of tax. B&N charges the GST (thank God it's not the 15% HST I have to pay on other sites), and no duty/import tax. It's not that big of a deal really.

I expect to pay tax on stuff, and even with import taxes and the like, it's still, sadly, cheaper than buying Canadian.

I thought about ordering directly from Criterion, until I saw that the shipping cost more than the film.

Barnes and Nobles finally shipped my huge order... I'll be jumping up and glancing out the window in anticipation every time I hear what sounds like a UPS truck. woohoo!

I was really hoping for STRAW DOGS in October. It's the 40th Anniversary, plus you got the crappy remake coming out soon. I thought it made sense. Oh well...

It might make sense if Criterion still owned the rights to releasing it but their DVD release is OOP, if you haven't noticed. So, you'll have to hope that some other studio releases it on blu-ray when the remake is released.

I'm going to guess there has to be some special arrangement with Criterion to offer the 50% deal. There's practically no way that B&N just does it on their own without working with Criterion.

Particularly considering B&N likely has to "stock up" in advance of the sale, it's not likely they would stock up at their "normal" procurement cost and then turn around and sell at either zero GM% or even negative GM%.

Yeah, even though Criterion dvd is oop, I thought there was a chance they still had the rights. But then it just dawned on me, mgm released it again a few years later. I don't trust mgm at all with this title.

CG, as an update, my B&N order shipped late last night and will be delivered today. Seems like B&N ships the pre-orders on release day most of the time and not to be delivered on release day like Amazon does. Again, the beautiful next day shipping, even though I am not a member and choose free shipping... It shipped from Kentucky and I am in Chicago, so I assume you will get yours today also? You never know...

Yeah they might get a special price and then a discount for buying in bulk or something.
