what is the deal with the new release for 3? they didn't do it for the other 2 did they? I just got an email about from CD Japan. Is everything eventually going UHD?

Just like the series Blu-ray, nobody knows. We don't know anything.

Earlier this year, the third Evangelion film, Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, got a 4K remaster built for IMAX screens across Japan, being released under the new title Evangelion 3.333. Now, it was announced that the rebuilt version will be released on 4K Blu-ray and regular Blu-ray on August 25.

Under the supervision of Hideaki Anno, Evangelion 3.333 was completely reshot for 4K, using updated technology that wasn't around when the film first released in 2012. While the overall story wasn't changed, some scenes were altered as well as some visuals updated to be more in line with Evangelion 3.0+1.0.

Someone bought out the entire stack of like 20+ Evangelion 3.33 blu-rays at my bigger Target. While the rest of the anime sectional remains basically full.

From a purely economic perspective as viewed within the framework of "game theory", that scalper had pretty good timing. The BD for 3.33 has become significantly more scarce as of late, with the last major online retailer with stock (Barnes & Noble) running out of it a couple weeks ago. At this point rounding up the last stragglers available at retail is definitely a profitable course of action.

If my gut feeling that there won't be another print run of the Funimation 3.33 BD/DVDs is correct (of which I certainly hope I'm wrong), the demand induced by Shin Evangelion getting a limited US theatrical run sometime in 2022 followed by its eventual domestic BD release could lead copies of 3.33 to easily reach $100+ levels. Note that the Eva 1.11 Blu-ray has been OOP for only 15 months now, and successful listings typically are in the $150-$200 range on eBay.

Of course the denizens of this subforum know that the HK Blu-ray from Neofilms/Deltamac is the superior releases for all right-minded sub watchers in North America (as it's locked to Region-A), but since 99.44% of all casual viewers have no idea that the licensed HK releases of 1.11 and 3.33 exist and are viable options in terms of quality that means that the level of demand (and thus pricing) on eBay for Funi's discs will largely go unchecked.

Amazon Prime Video has picked up international rights to “Evangelion: 3.0+1.01 Thrice Upon a Time,” the fourth movie in the “Evangelion” hit anime movie franchise.

The streaming giant will release the film worldwide, excluding Japan, from Aug. 13, 2021.

The new film includes recurring voice cast members Ogata Megumi, Hayashibara Megumi and Miyamura Yuko and boasts upgraded visuals. Amazon Prime Video will make it available with 10 different language dubs (including English, French, German, Portuguese, Spanish and Italian) and provide subtitles in 28 languages.

The launch of the fourth, and supposedly final, chapter in the film series will be accompanied by the release of the three previous elements: “Evangelion 1.11 You Are (Not) Alone,” “Evangelion:2.22 You Can (Not) Advance” and “Evangelion:3.33 You Can (Not) Redo.”

I don’t think it was ever officially confirmed, but we kinda got something of a confirmation back in March.
