I think of it as celebrities are allowed to be people too because they are but when they willfully engage in morally repugnant behavior then I reserve the right to like them less and even avoid their content altogether.

For me, if the person was particularly despicable it takes away any connection or enjoyment I have with their performance. Having said that, sometimes that person is very much in an ensemble cast so you have to recognise all of the other people that were involved and did good work. Also, I would add that people can change. |

lol..... every few months or so the subject of Mel Gibson comes up and then we get about 20 or so pro and con posts....
for some reason that I will never understand, he always seems to be the pinnacle of bad behavior even though other actors are guilty of pedophilia, assault, rape, child abuse/ molestation, even murder.... but all of those are nowhere as offensive as mad Mel apparently..... ![]() |

I love the idea that art is involved in movie making decisions. Studios don't want to work with him because they are afraid he will lose them money. If he were a popular rapist like some, they wouldn't mind, but he's an unpopular jack*** so why risk it? If it's all about the art, let Mel join the local theater group and practice his art there.

You almost have to. Let’s face it, most of us probably have rather large belief differences and vantage points versus those we watch perform, sing, direct, etc. Just as I don’t watch my favorite films because I agree with the personal beliefs of the performers, I also don’t skip content due to not agreeing with them. You get the idea. The only exception might be if someone was convicted in a court of law(not Twitter or TikTok) and the evidence was overwhelming in a case of a crime against a child or something truly heinous. That being said, the ease at which the cancel mob gets their knickers twisted these days is crazy. Gets some thick skin and stop being sissies. |

The whole Mel Gibson situation aside, I think Hacksaw Ridge is the best war film since Saving Private Ryan and, in general, just one of the best films in that genre.
1917 and Dunkirk were great, but, for me, Hacksaw Ridge tops them. |

I can still watch Woody Allen movies as long as Frank Sinatra's ex-wife isn't in them.
70s Woody Allen > 90s Woody Allen > 21st century Woody Allen > 80s Woody Allen And to anyone still holding a grudge over Annie Hall beating Star Wars for the Best Picture Oscar: it lost, get over it. The alleged Best Song of that year was a far more questionable choice when literally every other nominated song was better, and even some non-nominated songs from movies that year, particularly Saturday Night Fever and Smokey and the Bandit, were better. I'd even give "Rescue Aid Society," the least good song from The Rescuers, the award over what they gave it to. Last edited by WonkaBedknobs83; 02-18-2024 at 04:20 PM. |

I think the Coen brothers are just about the most overrated film living writer/directors in the U.S. and Drive-Away Dolls just enforced this view with me today.
They certainly can make great films: Fargo, Inside Llewyn Davis, A Serious Man, Blood Simple & Miller's Crossing but American cinema would be no poorer if they had never made anything. |

So, you think a director can make five "great" films and yet add nothing to the genre of American cinema? I mean, I can understand not caring for someone's work (I feel the same way about Marty), but to claim that they made five great films yet added nothing seems completely irrational.
