It's a mixture of new and classic Bond, which seems to be delighting some (i.e. me) and alienating others. Whatever the critics say, everyone who's interested should see it for themselves, and make up their own minds.

Yeah, it's more Connery/Lazenby mixed with Craig. I'm mystified by some of the hostility towards it. I had a terrific time. There's really exceptional work on display here, and Thomas Newman's score is a giant love letter to Bond scores.

Yes, it's explained in the film - Mr. White runs Quantum, a subsidiary of Spectre, which has many criminal branches.

Dominic Greene (from QOS) also worked for Spectre.

Silva's vengeance was targeted at 'M' specifically, but it appears he too worked for Spectre - where else would he get the financial backing to take on MI6?

I don't think it's explained very clearly. It almost seems like they just ignore Quantum and pretend it was SPECTRE all along. QoS established that Quantum was a very large and powerful organization with moles and agents all over the place and influential enough to control the water supply of Bolivia. That doesn't sound like some division of a larger organization.

I get that the producers didn't reacquire the rights to SPECTRE until after Skyfall was released, so obviously Quantum was originally intended to replace SPECTRE in the rebooted series. But in retrospect, maybe they should've continued focusing on that organization instead of shoehorning the other into the plot. They could've even started building towards SPECTRE's reveal in a future Bond movie like they did back in the 60's from Dr. No all the way to You Only Live Twice while simultaneously having Craig's Bond battle Quantum.

From the James Bond Wiki:

Quote:
The USSR intelligence organisation SMERSH featured in the Casino Royale novel was no longer a feasible foe when the Daniel Craig movie was being developed, so Bond producers developed Quantum in its stead. Quantum subsequently became the mastermind organisation replacement for both SMERSH from the early novels and SPECTRE from the early years of the film series in the Daniel Craig continuity.

It's been a long time since I have watched the older Bond movies so I headed to the following site to catch-up on Spectre timeline...

Four out of ten?

Did I and the print critics watch some other movie than the online critics? This movie has amazing moments, great production design, a knockout score, incredible action...I'm once again feeling like I'm in an alternate universe.

Daniel Craig clarifies his "cut my wrists" comments

Quote:
Last month, Daniel Craig faced some controversy when he was asked about playing James Bond again in another movie. “I’d rather break this glass and slash my wrists,” he replied. “No, not at the moment. Not at all. That’s fine. I’m over it at the moment. We’re done. All I want to do is move on.”

Appearing on the Today show on Thursday, the Spectre star clarified his comments, saying that he didn’t express his feelings on the subject very “eloquently.”

“If you’re 200 yards from the end of a marathon, and someone comes running up to you and says, ‘Are you going to run another marathon?’ there’s two words you use, and not on a morning show,” Craig told Matt Lauer. “So that’s really what that was about. And I’ve had massive amounts of fun making this film. Probably more fun on this film than I have on all the others put together.”

Craig added that he may end up returning for another Bond installment: He signed a five-film contract with Eon Productions, and Spectre is the fourth film he’s made as 007. “The simple answer at the moment is I don’t want to think about it,” Craig said of continuing on as Bond. “I just don’t want to think about it. I want to think about other things. I want to go home.”

I get what he's saying. He just finished one so he just wants to relax and recoup from it before coming back as Bond in B25. Right now he just wants to move on and see what comes next. It's WAY too early to start thinking about Bond 25.

+1 I like the "200 yards from the end of a marathon" analogy.

I almost never agree with the scores posted on this site for the films themselves. The only things I rely on this site for are the screencaps, 3D/audio/picture quality and the forum so I can get other opinions on them. This Bond will do big business, like the rest of them. The only thing that gives me pause is it having to do at least $650 million just to break even. What is it that Spielberg said again about the movie studios imploding with huge blockbuster movies?

Especially considering that the franchise may be moving to a new studio soon.

I don't agree often with the movie reviews posted on the home page, but they're not far off on SPECTRE. 4 out of 10 is pretty harsh, but I don't think I'd give it any higher than 5 or 6 out of 10.
