4K UHD IS a blu-ray format; its full name is Ultra HD Blu-ray and is marketed as 4K Ultra HD.

"Ultra HD Blu-ray (marketed as 4K Ultra HD) (UHD-BD), also referred (to) as 4K Blu-ray, is a digital optical disc data storage format that is an enhanced variant of Blu-ray."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultra_HD_Blu-ray

Your article says that the average cost for a blu-ray, which should include 4K discs, is up 32.7%; that's a lot!

DVD is up 20.9%; that's pretty steep, too.

However, in practice I have not noticed any significant price increases when I buy discs; I feel like I am paying about the same as I did last year.

As a format 4K discs are doing alright; those that want the best home video format to date are willing to pay the premium that having the best incurs.

Your last sentence is beyond obvious; no business keeps offering an unprofitable product.

I must admit, I HAVE noticed a price increase. Not that I care much. 4K offerings from some boutique labels are around £10 more expensive. That’s before we start factoring in new customs laws.

Well worth it though. Who wants digital HD/UHD? Not even good enough for my future chunky ‘Sky inside’ TV.

Yeah with Criterion, Kino, Severin, Arrow, Second Sight, Shout, Studio Canal and other indies all releasing 4K discs, along with the major studios continually releasing catalog titles on the format, it sure looks like it is dying .

Obviously still profitable or they wouldn't continue to release content.

I have been able to secure enough titles (4K and Blu) to ensure I have enough for movie night for the next three years. My 4K purchases have increased by a scary amount and I’m still buying some very interesting Blu-rays. I will update my collection when I have the strength!

So a market can be dying and profitable at the same time.

I don't think the market is dying. That's what the digital prognosticators on here keep saying. Dying would indicate it will one day cease to be. I don't foresee that ever happening.

The market is losing 20% to 25% of it's value every year. With an 86% total loss in the last 13 years. THAT is the business definition of a dying market. Not a dead market . . . a dying market.

There are three states for a market:

Positive Growth
Stagnant
Negative Growth

Physical media has been in a Negative Growth state since 2008.

The only thing we care about is the ability to buy discs. Some boutique labels are thriving. So much so, they are bringing out several sub labels. Discs are fine and they will continue to be fine. You worry about your home premieres and Disney+ and we will worry about our end.

What he said. I couldn't care less if the market is in negative growth. It's obviously healthy enough to support more releases every month than I could possibly hope to afford. That's all I care about.

Streaming is in a Positive Growth state and will continue to be so for years to come - no need to worry.

But you should worry about your end.

Well I’m Not remotely worried. Even if new releases stopped tomorrow, I could buy enough titles I haven’t seen to last me a decade or so. New releases and great boutique releases will continue for many years. I have a high end Panny 4K player, I’m buying a PS5 next year and I have a ship load of new 4K discs. I have a decade and more of enjoyment ahead of me.

Like the cinema, it will be fine.

One of my few A/V regrets, I deleted post that I archived from BBS's and CompuServe that were made in the 80's and 90's. LaserDisc users had to put up with a constant barrage of: disc are too expensive ● can not record to disc ● very few places rent disc ● quality is very little better than video cassette ● no need to buy, title will be on HBO or Showtime soon ● Dolby Digital and/or DTS audio will soon come to HBO, Showtime and video cassette (that one made me ).

Netflix will report a profit first quarter next year. They will also be debt free by the end of this year.

Disney says 2024 but it could happen in 2023. Not bad for a world wide service that is less than 2 years old.

And like all you care about is weekly disc releases, all I care about is new content every month.

HBO Max will add 204 new titles in October.
