Yeah and King Kong has to defeat 7 of the monsters that Godzilla already beat in order to get to Godzilla as the final boss. Tie in a video game playing as Kong and we're good.

If one of them is going to die, it will be Godzilla. Hasn't it been said that they deal expires after 2020 between Toho and Legendary? It makes sense that Godzilla would die and allow for Kong to become the main focus of future Monsterverse films. Plus, to this point, Kong has never been referred to as King Kong. Sounds like a mantle to be handed down once the current King of the Monsters falls. That said, I do think Kong and Godzilla will team-up. I am still thinking Mechagodzilla is the actual threat of the movie. It makes a lot of sense to me. But Godzilla is likely to fall in the conflict against the common enemy.

But that line did not originate from the Michael Bay movies.

Maybe not, but it seems like a shot at Transformers IMO.

Actually, sadly no. The current Toho contract, allegedly, states that Legendary cannot kill off Godzilla whatsoever. This all comes from the Toho forums but the people with that info have had relations with actual people at Toho for years. Plus, Toho is looking to expand into the US market and make their own Godzilla films once the contract with Legendary is up.

They aren't going to want their character killed off.

I don't think either will die in the film but be badly injured and respect one another to take down a greater evil as you said.

I would personally favor neither of them dying so we could get more movies, myself.

I dunno, I reckon they could kill off Kong if they wanted, unless there's a contract to keep Kong alive as well? Though it'd definitely be cooler for them to team up against something much worse than both of them.

The King Kong rights are legendarily one of the most screwed up in film history. Technically 4 parties own different rights, different storylines if you may be. As of 1986, Universal owns the majority rights. Richard Cooper's estate owns all publishing rights but they frequently license the character out for comics and novels to keep generating funds for his children. However, because of the Universal deal with Legendary, they temporarily signed off film usage rights to Legendary. No clue if there's a no kill clause for Kong.

I just know Legendary had a 3-film usage rights deal with Godzilla, then the rights revert back to Toho. '14, KOTM and GvsK complete that deal. So I assume the monsterverse will continue solely as a Kong driven vehicle unless Toho sees it financially adverse to extend the rights contract.

If the movies do well then I can't imagine them not wanting to make more, but we shall see.

Toho I know wants to make their own cinematic universe based around their monster properties, so I think that they won't want to extend the Legendary deal unless they get freedom to make their own live action monster films at the same time. I do think I read Shin Godzilla 2 died because they couldn't release their own film in 2019 or 2020 cause they cannot have a film out the same year as a Legendary Godzilla film.

True. I recall reading something about Toho going over to the US as a movie studio. Maybe that has a part to do with it.

Also, isn’t there some kind of fine print that denies the labeling as King Kong, which is why he’s just “Kong”?

I have read that on the Toho forums but did not know how true that was.

However, that would make sense.
