The thing I fear is them taking the upscaled 3D and just dumping it onto 4K disc, which pretty much happened with T2 UHD (as although that wasn’t an ‘eye’ from the 3D conversion it had all the shitty degraining and sharpening applied to it anyway, and is also a 2K upscale).

It'll most likely turn out to be another Terminator 2 4K/3D situation. All grain scrubbed clean with a generous serving of KY jelly to smoothen things.

Was it in 1.78:1 or scope?

Maybe but I still think it's best to wait for reviews and then decide which version to get rather then spend money now only to spend it again in a few months.

My guess would be late summer/early Fall.

Saw this in 3D at AMC's Dolby Cinema. I did not notice any HFR. It did look a bit soft at times but the 3D conversion is rather spectacular. Hope to see it once more before it's pulled.

I got this on iTunes US (Paramount). When it gets a free 4K upgrade, I will check and decide whether to buy the physical as I am worried this will be another T2.

As of now, I am happy with the UK fat case edition housing both 3D + 2D discs.

I just came back from AMC, and the Dolby Cinema presentation there is unfortunately indeed in scope, BUT the 4K remaster looks not bad: there’s definitely digital noise reduction—the movie looks like a brand new film shot on digital camera. Nevertheless, we do see natural skin details during characters’ close-ups, do remember some actors’ make-up is heavier than others, which affect their skin detail, so it’s unlike what we see in Terminator 2 where all characters’ skin details were smoothed out.

AMC’s presentation does contain HFR as well. It’s not in every scene or even during every single motion in that scene, but when it appears, it’s not as distracting as I’d assumed, but enhanced the 3D viewing experience. The most evident sequence where HFR appears is the final dream scene. I doubt AMC would use different copies, so for people who didn’t detect HFR during AMC’s Dolby presentation, it must have been individual insensitivity. For example, m husband wouldn’t realize when motion smoothing was turned on on our TV…

The original was in scope, why do you want to see it in open matte? I thought we're all purist?

It doesn’t really bother me in the theater, but at home it’s nice to see my whole TV filled. We never think about the fact that no matter how big of a TV we buy, we still get less image when we watch a contemporary movie…

Don't you have to remove as much grain as possible for 3D conversions of films shot on actual film? So all those reviews of the 4K 3D version aren't surprising? I wonder if HFR might not be mess with the grain as well? As for open matte, it can be fun to watch sometimes, a bit fascinating but 2.40 imo is so much more cinematic.

That's not the case. I could tell right away when Avatar 2 HFR sequences came up on screen, and I haven't seen any HFR scenes in my IMAX 3D presentation. It was not in Dolby Vision, though.

Wait, I’m talking about AMC’s Dolby Cinema presentation, if your presentation is IMAX 3D, then it’s not Dolby Cinema. The only theater showing IMAX 3D near me was actually The Chinese Theater in Hollywood, which is too far, even though almost All AMC locations have an IMAX screen themselves, so I wonder if you got cheated with the old IMAX 3D master…

All depends on who's doing what. Some post houses will remove the grain and keep it gone, some will regrain after removing, some will keep the OG grain and just add another layer of it to the other eye.

In Titanic's case it got a Lowry pass for the 4K master the 3D conversion was derived from, the negative was already very thickly exposed and finely grained but the Lowry processing quietened the grain even more, to the extent where no major grain management was done on Titanic 3D aside from a few additional shots done by outside vendors.

But what they've done for this 2022 edition is AI upscale the 3D 2K master to 4K (because the 3D master was just 2K) which is what's exacerbating the inherent processing greeblies that are baked in and making it look conspicuously waxier and generally more 'artificial' than before.

For those curious with the HFR scenes.

I went to the IMAX Laser at the AMC Grove in the LA area since that theater after the TCL Chinese IMAX had the 4K film DCP since there were two nearby IMAXs presenting the film and from what I heard over the grapevine those received just a basic 2K 3D non HFR version, I was like nah. I'll make the trek to the LA area.

I was truly curious to see these HFR scenes since I was fearing Cameron was going to pull a George Lucas special edition on the film. But, thankfully that was not the case since the use of the HFR was subtle. However, having seen the film seven times during its original theatrical run when I was a teenager I was able to quickly pick up the scenes that were HFR'd.

These are the scenes where I noticed the HFR being implemented.

when the ship was docked in Southampton.

the third class party scene

then some quicks pans when Lovejoy chases Jack and Rose

when the ship is about to hit the Iceberg for the quick pans at the bridge when Murdoch engages the telemotors

when the water reaches the boat deck and coming up the staircase the water had more of a lifelike in movement

Finally, when the wreck transforms back to new at the end and pans into Grand staircase entrance

I was expecting something more like Way of Water which was somewhat distracting, but glad that wasn't the case.

From my armchair expert position, it seemed to me like they did it extremely sparingly and it was not a full 24-to-48 HFR - possibly as small as doing whatever sampling and pulldown needed to just bring it to 30fps, on the verge of being imperceptibly different from the original as opposed to creating a full soap opera effect many viewers decry (and would likely look more alienating then Avatar or the Ang Lee films given its analog source, no matter how much noise has been taken from it). I found it pretty effective in that it wasn't distracting and I'm sure in individual shots I didn't even notice, but it seemed to me it was likely for less than two minutes total runtime of the film and often for one standout shot in busy sequences.

Was your IMAX Laser presentation in 1.78:1 or 2.39:1?

I hope so. Although the Blu-Ray still looks incredible. It holds up well against some 4K discs.
