I enjoyed the 2016 movie (it's not perfect for sure but fun with some good laughs, and I think it's better than Ghostbusters 2) but it performed softly domestically and outright tanked overseas, so obviously Sony wants to go in a different direction.

This used to be a huge brand (it always amazes me that GB2 set the all time opening weekend record only to lose that the very next weekend to Batman) and Sony probably is counting on nostalgia box office. The reboot actually had a ton of nostalgic call backs as well, but seems likely that doing a continuation of the original film is the only thing that will excite some of the fanbase.

I have no problem if people like the 2016 version. Having said that, I would have to highly disagree that it's better than Ghostbusters 2. Unlike the 2016 version, you still had the chemistry of the original cast again in Ghostbusters 2. Not to mention, the ghosts were much scarier as well.

Critics actually scored it higher than GB2 as well, but I have a bunch of issues with that film (rewatched it right before the 2016 movie came out to get ready). It had a feeling of the cast going through the motions at times (which is too bad, cause as you say the chemistry is excellent) and I never got the whole premise that many people feel the Ghostbusters are frauds, cause there had to be at least tens of thousands of witnesses and as well as a ton of news covering the climax of the first film.

Critics are usually very PC. Either that or they were afraid to give Feigbusters a negative score because they don't want to be called sexist. Just look what happened to Roper...

Besides, movies like Superman Returns, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and Sharknado all have fresh ratings as well. That doesn't mean they are good movies, though.

Yeah, I have nothing against anyone who likes the 2016 Ghostbusters either. If others like it, then great! I'm glad they do. It's just that, I, and many others, do not.

The trouble with that project, IMO, is that it was a reboot. I don't think the world was quite ready for an old franchise to be completely shaken up like that with that type of script and directing (both of which are quite poor even by SNL standards).

I think a lot of people simply wanted GB3 from the get-go, or at the very least, a reboot with comedy similar to that of the older movies. And part of me thinks that the person responsible for people expecting that, is Dan himself, for always making public talks about it over the years only for nothing to come to fruition. He gave people hope that a sequel would happen. They didn't get that, but instead was presented with 2016 Ghostbusters, and they made up their own minds.

Roper sounds like a straight talking dude. He knows his own mind and won't let anyone talk smack to him. Ironically, I do agree with him. GB2016 was very unfunny.

But I'll pick out only 3 good things about GB2016 though:

1. I did like the new equipment designs and car.

2. I liked the look of the ghosts/effects in the movie.

3. The villain design was quite decent. I did like that.

Unfortunately, I didn't like anything else. It bombed at the box office for a good reason. And it's now non-canon for a good reason too. We don't want that crap tainting our childhoods.

I just don't like the 2016 version because it felt too much like a parody of the original film. This is one of the reasons why I don't think the 2016 version is better than Ghostbusters 2. Because at least with Ghostbusters 2, the characters are more relatable, regardless of gender, and you are invested to see more of them. The characters from the 2016 version, though, come off as cartoon characters. They are suppose to be "scientists", but they all come off as dopey comic reliefs and all of a sudden are skilled at fighting ghost as well? Like, WTF!? They are not believable as characters at all. The heart of Ghostbusters are the characters, not silly dumb jokes and CGI effects.

Anyone who says GB2016 is better than the original two movies are practically begging for a site ban.

This song alone (From GBII) is better than 100% of GB2016.

But yeah, I do agree. How can you not want more Egon, Ray, Winston, and Peter? GBII provides that.

I still find GB 2 to be underrated, and yes, better than GB16.

One thing I hope the movie does is actually shoot in NYC. It was a pet peeve of mine in the 2016 movie how they clearly just used second unit to pick up some famous GB's sites like the public library and the whole movie looked so different from New York (even though I was excited to see the mansion scenes at the beginning were filmed where I had history courses in college).

It is rumored that they are going for a more Stranger Things vibe and will take place in a small town, which make sense since filming in New York City is too expensive to shoot there and Ghostbusters doesn't exactly make the amount of money that superhero movies do. So filming in a smaller town will keep the cost much lower, something that Paul Feig failed at.

But yeah, I get what you mean, though. I immediately could tell they shot the 2016 version in Boston instead of New York City. Which is weird because I never been to Boston. I mean, my dad is from Boston, but I can't say I been there myself. Also for a movie set in New York City, it sure felt pretty empty.

The fact of the matter is, people forgot and ignored GB16, so Sony is gonna keep it that way. Plus, they want to make money.

Ugh, the extended cut is even worse.

21 Jump Street and Jumanji must have made Sony realize that making sequels to cult franchises can still work. Now they are continuing the continuity with Ghostbusters and Men In Black. As much as I crap on Sony, I give them credit for this.

This is a clear example of people who like or hate a movie for something other then the actual merits of the movie, especially Chris Sutcliffe's quote.

"Peter Weller returns to RoboCop: Why ignore the Joel Kinnaman remake?"

Would you ever get a headline like that? No, you wouldn't. Because it doesn't make any sense.

This is a good opportunity for them to widely release Elmer Bernstein's score for the original film. I love his tracks on the massively produced soundtrack and have long wanted his score on CD that is not a limited release. When you think of all the scores available, how is this one not?

This Summer 2020 date seems really fast for something I would think would need some time to do right and time for the special fx.
