I have this but haven't seen the movie at all yet (maybe seen it partially on HD DVD a long time ago but don't remember anything). I heard that you need to read the book first to fully appreciate it?

I have had the TV for over two years now. It's out of warranty and that means that Sony could not give a rat's arse and the dealer even less so.
What colour temperature is your TV set to?

It is set to "Expert 1" as recommended by Rtings.com and others.

People have posted that they have tried every possible combination of settings and nothing helps. I have tried a few variations myself and it did not help. A restart will temporarily restore things to normal, at least with Netflix, but the problem eventually returns.

Dune 2021 on HBO Max has been the most problematic manifesting these issues with both of my viewings.

If my stamina returns, I will use my smartphone to take a video of me giving it some well deserved hammer "therapy." If I had the strength, I would be tempted to toss the big POS right out the back door to see how well it bounces off of a concrete patio.

There is a finite number of shows on streaming that come to media. Thats the way it's always been. Part of that has to do with the fact that there is too many TV shows on streaming. People binge watch them or see a series and don't need to see them again.

Some of the better series do end up coming out on BD from Netflix, HBO Max, Amazon Prime, but that a drop in the bucket. So your Youtube host is really discussing nothing much of anything new. Nothing that he can make a good argument about except to talk it up like its the demise of media. LOL.

It doesn't really have anything to do with streaming either. There are also tons of broadcast and cable TV shows that have never been released on physical media either. This was true long before streaming even existed.

Sadly, I feel like things are only trying to survive the warranty period now.

I have always known some people who only have the latest things and tend to lease them and then move to the next one. The truth is things are designed to be useful for the short period of the warranty. Computers are getting this because to have any security you have to have new things that support the active OS and new hardware that does security checks of some kind.

Best Buy has a very short return window for discs now, you have to inspect them right away. (outside of the holiday return exceptions)

My current projector supports HDR and can be used with HDR but every movie would have to be tweaked and it would still be challenging. So I'm happy to convert everything to SDR which I can calibrate. This is what I do for "tone mapping."

The new projector I have ordered looks at every frame (in it's adaptive HDR mode) so that nothing gets that over dark can't see anything look. HDR is certainly difficult to work with.

I don’t believe that’s true with computers. Windows (the latest version) can last the life of a desktop/ laptop and Chromebooks are good for around six years. Software updates are not dependant on you having the latest hardware.

Consoles last almost a decade, TVs last on average seven years (smart TVs are updated for pretty much the lifespan of the set.

Plus, the new right to repair and the inevitable move to a circular economy o er the next decade means things more than ever, need to be built to last.

If you mean Windows 11 my i7 3GHz Dell can't run it.

Consoles are great because they are designed for the current generation and they are rather "fixed" in design at least before they started with the Pro BS. Folks want a Nintendo Switch Pro even though there's good reasons to never do that. Computers are getting pretty greedy with the excuse of needing more security. Software is all going to subscriptions which actually is realistic because it needs maintenance and no one works for free or they shouldn't.

When I was younger and things broke that was only the beginning. I changed the common phrase to "if it aint broke it's someone else's."

I remember being stunned when I first lived with my girlfriend and the stapler jammed so she bought a new one. I never knew that was even an option.

Things were fixable to an extent that they aren't now. Tesla for example has zero maintenance (outside of tires and brakes) and it's designed to last for as long as it does and then it's over.

Things are going to change. It’s never a rapid thing but there will be more pressure on tech companies to make things last. No doubt they will find another way to milk the cow.

Edit - I guess this isn't Video related but it's NEWS so...fits the future tech part of the thread title.

Pink Floyd has broken into the Apple Music ATMOS category with the new reissue of A Momentary Lapse of Reason, The Division Bell and The Delicate Sound of Thunder.

The official PF website claims most of the back catalog is now available from music streaming services in (what they call) UHD and several albums are set to be issued in spacial audio.

Quoted from PF dot com

Most Pink Floyd albums have been released digitally in UHD (24/44.1 to 24/192 bit rate) – a format which provides a far superior quality than standard CD whether streamed or downloaded. You can hear them on Tidal, Deezer, and Amazon Music.

Four Pink Floyd albums digitally in Sony's 360 Reality Audio and Dolby Audio. Providing a superior immersive spatial headphone experience, the albums are 1987's A Momentary Lapse of Reason, 1988's Delicate Sound of Thunder, The Division Bell from 1994, and Pink Floyd's final release, 2014's The Endless River. These albums and more will also be released in Ultra High Definition (UHD) audio – providing the best possible digital audio quality available through supported digital and streaming service providers.

The immersive audio treatment of Sony's 360 Reality Audio and Dolby Audio enables the listener to hear subtle nuances in the mix, the positioning of the guitar, drums, etc., and be able to experience the songs as they would sound in a live environment.

That's me when it comes to television. I only own a handful of legacy shows on BD and that's it. I get better replay value from movies than I do television. If I ever get the need to want to watch a show then I'll see if it's available to stream or on DVD to check out at my local library. I'm not going to invest in television on physical media if I don't have to.

I know people who went through a phase of

"Oh, I'm to tired for a movie, a show is only 40-50 minutes"

And then proceeded to watch the whole season in one go.

These people now prefer the soap opera episodic type of shows where they really don't need to focus on what's going on very much. Just binge through and move on. They watch like it's a chore and there's some reward for being done.

It's not fair but that's life.

My comment was about Dune 2021. IMHO, Dune 2021 is better than Dune 1984. That view may be tainted by how much we liked the sound track of the 2021 version.

Now for Blade Runner (1982) and Blade Runner 2049, like them both in their own right. Have always loved the sound track of 1982 version (Vangelis) and with the new immersive audio mix like it even more. For this one Warner did it right and did not cheap out with a auto Dolby Atmos pass. Need to use care with 2049, set wrong and it may take out your sub(s).

I have a late shift today, so just got done watching an episode of The Fall before I head in. I seem to be enjoying tv shows more and more these days, since they still allow me to get downstairs for an hour and enjoy my room. Sure, I could easily stream the same show, but I am a tactile guy. There is something satisfying about pulling the disc out of my collection and getting things setup. There is also the same argument of quality of disc vs stream, with some of the shows I have watched rivaling that of movies, so it makes sense to me to have them on the format that looks and sounds the best. Speaking of which, I also recently started watching 12 Monkeys, and that sounds damn good.

I have owned both The Fall and 12 Monkeys for a couple of years, but finally got around to pulling them out. Glad I picked them both up, even if I never watch them again. The cost of these sets were not a great deal of money, but yet they will both give me hours of enjoyment and entertainment.
