I liked 3/4 of those.... Can never find time to watch News of the World but I really should before Black Friday because I bought the used Blu for $4 and if it's good would rebuy it on UHD if it was on aggressive sale.

I agree little will change soon but maybe its best or important that lots changes fast. Would be nice if they targeted the big fish first like cruise ships, amusement parks, New York and so on.

My thinking was that some of these policies are pretty much a socialist way of living. I hear terms like degrowth which means surrendering our capitalist way of life so that other less fortunate countries could catch up over the coming decades. In this scenario, profits are not the ultimate aim, welfare and the climate is. The companies offering us movies, tv, gaming etc.. need to be making a huge profit, can they do that in a society that starts to focus on the planet more than making money and being as well off as possible? After all, socialist and climate focussed policies would try to enforce policies like the circular economy and households only having what they need rather than what they want. To have a government or central organisation deciding what we should have and not have is pretty terrifying and devastating to me.

If governments fail to get climate under control within this decade, we could well see an uprising where climate activists and political figures force the issue through forming huge coalitions. When the Earth is at stake, they will have some power.

All Barnes & Noble orders have been shipped to my front door.
Even if my family buy me a disc or discs as a gift, they do it via a online service.

"Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness" - thats from the Declaration Of Independence. Something we Americans hold near and dear.

You definitely worry way too much about things that just aren't going to happen. No how, no way.
Our current governments may not be in charge going into the next decade. See my reply to Cheez.

Why would they do such a thing? Budgets relating to climate change.

Politicians love the CASH and putting in regulations that result in a new area to skim is an instant green light. They are like full time embezzlers.

Nothing better than making it look like a moral decision.

It has been proven 100% that smoking cigarettes are the major cause of lung cancer. Have the politicans gotten rid of cigarettes? No. All they did was tax the shit out of them: New York Cigarette Tax - $4.35/pack.

10,000 people die each year by drunk drivers. Excessive alcohol use is responsible for more than 95,000 deaths in the United States each year. Have the politicians gotten rid of booze? The federal government collects approximately $1 billion per month from excise alcohol taxes on spirits, beer, and wine. Taxes on spirits are significantly higher than beer and wine at $13.50 per gallon, while beer is taxed at $18 per barrel and wine is $1.07-$3.40 per gallon.

So what's the worst that can happen to movie theaters? You guessed it! They had a tax - $1 per ticket = $1,228,767,126 (2019).

Your fears are like cooking a frog. Drop him into boiling water - he jumps right out. But put him in cold water then slowly turn the heat up - he will cook while never leaving the pot. And his "cooking" in this analogy means taxing.

Like I said - you worry too much about nothing. The world is Gray not Black & W.

You really want something to worry about? How about a Plastics Tax. We produce way too much plastic items. Plastic is not bio-degradable. So anything made of plastic - like physical media - will be taxed. Raising the price of PM by $1 to $2 per movie isn't going to promote adoption or continued buying habits from casual buyers. Yes hardcore collectors will literally pay any amount for their movies on disc. But are they a big enough market for a future past a few years after the addition of the Plastics Tax?

There are plastics in solar panels, cars, batteries, etc.. that won’t go well. Not with all the other taxes coming our way.

Regardless, I will still have my discs, they ain’t removing them.

Films on servers (Disney+ for example) use a shitload of carbon.

The concern is not so much movie theatres but what we can have in the home.

So do Christie 6P Laser projectors: 30 amps per projector + 11.5 amps per chiller (1 per projector)

The average Central A/C system in the US (230V) draws between 15 and 20 amps. And there are millions and millions of them.

Shall we continue the game of . . . "Can You Top This!"

Most of the modern stuff we use have plastics in it. They can’t tax plastics, single use plastics almost certainly though.

But you said your passion is going to the movies. Now you've made a complete 180 and are concerned about the future of home entertainment?

HE started after WWII with the advent of television. Politicans need TV to reach the public. If there's one industry that is 100 % foolproof safe from their cuts it is television. Take that to the bank and cash it!

My passion is movies period. I have said that countless times. Film is vital to my existence. It’s not a hobby, it’s a passion.

I buy most films I enjoy at the cinema. In this thread, I have discussed my fear of losing the ability to watch films at home on numerous occasions going way back to 2011.

Sure they can. They design a tax system based on the % of the item's plastic composition.

Take cell phones. The case is plastic but the inards aren't. So it will have less of a Plastic Tax then say an action figure which is 100% injection molded plastic.

We have spent decades becoming a throwaway society. Now we have to do a 180 and become a "fix it" society. I remember paying $2000 for a PC. No plastic other than the keyboard keys. Metal casing. Metal keyboard case. Sucker was a tank!

At one time - there were no plastics. We used Bakelite for phones, knobs on stoves, etc.

Whatever happens, as long as I have the ability to enjoy film, I can deal with it.

And here we are 10 years later and what has happened in those 10 years? They have made watching your beloved films that much easier and cheaper to watch at home. We have transitioned from SD/HD to HD/UHD HDR. And in 10 years we have gone from 65" being the largest sized TV you could buy to almost 100".

We see the future: MicroLED. Better video quality than anything before it and most important - less power usage. And because it will be a modular system you will have the ability, for the very first time ever, be able to upgrade your TV's size. Start with a 55" then 2 years later - make it a 75", then 2 years after that - a 105".

The future couldn't be brighter for home entertainment. And politicans can't nor won't stop it. They depend too much on it.

To be fair, we didn’t have such a world emergency in those ten years, or at least we weren’t as aware of it.

Sure we did - The Great Recession. No death toll for people. Just for investors, businesses and corporations. The housing market imploded and 10 years later . . .
