So, they aren't releasing a newly restored video version at all?

They probably will as a single in 2025 when the superman reboot comes out.

The current release appears more about getting the full Reeve collection in 4K.

What a way to celebrate the film's anniversary, the studio's anniversary, and Reeve....release the same botched version with the star's credit a mess, and take away the superior audio. Don't they want to showcase their best work? Obviously not. No sale here. I have too many other films I don't own on any format, to waste money. I would have absolutely supported this release if they had done right by the first film.

It really is a shame, isn't it? I really wanted to LOVE this set and now it's turning into a turd.

It's different in terms of fidelity as the 2.0 is severely degraded. It was early days for Dobly and in the rush to finish the film the filmmakers piled dubs atop of dubs, i.e. not going back to the original elements when they needed to make changes but taking the re-recorded sound and then re-recording that, many times over in some cases. They also used lots of old optical audio effects rather than mag so they were very low quality to begin with. It's not that the 70mm audio didn't come from this same source material because it did, but they laid down the 70mm first (inc split surrounds) and then the subsequent 35mm Dolby Stereo and mono mixes. But as they weren't recording multichannel stems (groups of dialogue, music and effects elements for archival purposes) they had to newly mix each mix and although they tried to make them sound the same they just don't, the 2.0 is a pale imitation of the 70mm.

I remember when Warners botched the inclusion of the OG 2.0 on one of the DVDs (some things never change, lol) and there was a big outcry about it. They replaced the DVD to include the OG 2.0 and I almost wished they hadn't bovvered because it sounded *so* bad!! What the 70mm mix gives us is a representation of the OG audio with layers of crud stripped back, perhaps still not amazing in itself in terms of quality if one likes to compare to "reference" but it's a step up from the 2.0 nonetheless.

my apologies to Boris..I get it now..Amazon posted photos of the old Superman the Movie Set on their site instead of new one..

definitely missed that one Amazon and thanks for just renewing my Prime account at a higher rate...

Glad I kept the original release and I am doing the same with the Mask of Zorro...both have nice slips and I put steelbook covers on them for protection and safe keeping.

I said this before and will say again. The steelbook set is a work of art, honors Reeve nicely , and is absolutely worth the money even though the first disc is a rehash. Unfortunately it's sold out and the regular set is no prize, so if you can't get the steelbook set and can be patient it's probably better off to wait until the next release (again likely 2025 to coincide with the new Superman movie) where hopefully we'll get an actually remastered superman 1 disc.

It's not a work of art, dude. Someone slapped a textless version of the poster art on Steelbooks.

And if they "honor Reeve nicely", why didn't they fix his credit?

I have that disc. Maybe I'll hang on to it even after the 4K comes in. I'm generally pretty happy with the Donner cut, warts and all. I saw the theatrical cut of Superman II for the first time as an adult and I thought it was silly.

That disc is basically worthless now in resale value unless you have it still factory sealed (even then you'll only get like $8 for it), so if you have the space there is no harm in hanging on to it.

It's not worthless if you want the 70mm track.

The contents of the discs are worthless. The real money's in steelbooks and slipcovers!

It's all about that packaging!!!

I'm sure that when Richard Donner was working on Superman in '77 that he wondered how the home video market would present his movie. Forget the picture and sound quality!

It's so sad that anyone should say this. The hard work over several years went into the movies, not the slap-it-on-a-box-with-Photoshop-in-five-minutes.

The fact that you think the packaging is more important than the film, your dismissal about the importance of the audio tracks, the fact that your'e more in favor of steelbooks than a proper transfer, really says a lot about you.

You want a trophy for your wall.

I'm just being factual. For instance:

Average ebay sale price of 4K The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: $15

Average ebay sale price of 4K The Good, the Bad and the Ugly with slipcover: $100

Therefore, the cardboard slipcover alone for this release is worth approximately 5.5x as much as the contents of the disc.

You might not like the reality of the situation, but that is the reality of the situation.

Yeah, we covered this. And I showed you evidence against it. Funny how you bring it up again.

But we all know that you just want something for your wall. If you cared about the movie, then you'd be more upset about what's missing than the steelbooks.

The steelbooks will last forever, basically. On the other hand, the two 4K discs of Superman we have now will be replaced by one with better video in a couple of years as the resto money was already spent. Again, reality.
