Never forget this cringe commercial. It should be a reminder of past sins.

Me: Waiting for Eva.
Everyone else: Memes and Swags
Gkids: Did we say 2021? We meant 2022.

All this talk of swag just reminds me of two things:

This clip from The Office

and this episode of The Filthy Frank Show (1:04 in)

Also, which Eva character do you guys think has the most swag

My vote goes to Rebuild's Shikinami due to her cat-eared hat and track jacket.

A GKIDS redub of the films with more consistency with the ADV dub of the series would be great.
I am already happy with the ADV series dub but I did not like the Manga dubs of the films for their many inconsistencies and questionable alterations.
I am really hoping GKIDS would be able to give us the best middle-ground between preserving ADV cast with the Netflix dub consistency.

One glaring issue was the pronunciation of "Eva." In the ADV dub (and the Netflix dub), it was pronounced "EI-va" (like the name Ava). In the Manga dub of the movies, it was usually "EV-a" (like the name Evan) mixed with a few uses of the former. It was weird.

I watched most of NGE by renting the Platinum Edition DVDs through my public library -- except that my library didn't have them, so they were always interlibrary loans. I got probably over halfway through the series before I lost interest (depression), so I ended up watching the whole show on Netflix when it finally got released there.

In my opinion, the dubs have their pros and cons. The Netflix one is more faithful to the source material, but as a result, some lines are grammatically bizarre (e.g. "Third Children" instead of "Third Child"). I also thought the voice acting was less exciting. The ADV dub is more entertaining and definitely more nostalgic (but not for me since I only watched it as an adult), though they take a lot more liberties with the source material.

For some reason, the analogy I have in mind is English translations of the Bible. Netflix's dub is something like the NRSV, while ADV's is more like the KJV. The former is more accurate, but the latter is more... entertaining, for lack of a better word (and has more cultural relevance).

If GKIDS is doing its own dub, I don't know how that'll compare. At this point, they could release it with Japanese audio only and English subtitles, and I'd still buy it. Beats spending hundreds on out-of-print DVDs.

Anime Ltd.'s Blu-ray release of Violet Evergarden had its English dubs from Netflix.
I am guessing that this new GKIDS dub would most likely be just for the movies to tie in more with the ADV dub of the series.
If that's the case, I still hope they can deal with Lionsgate to include the old Manga dub of the movies as an alternate option.
And if GKIDS and Anime Ltd. can still deal with Netflix, maybe including the Netflix dubs as yet another alternative option would be great too.

P.S: Are the movies (Death and EoE) split into two discs for the international Blu-ray releases, the Japanese Renewal DVD and Netflix or are they one disc as Renewal of Evangelion like the Japanese Blu-ray?
I hope Death still has the Intermission since it was cut from the Netflix release but it was still on the Renewal DVD.
Ideally, both films would be included on one disc with the option on watching the two films separately or as one combined film.

If that ends up being the case, I will at least give it a try. If it is a fail for me, the extras would be the deciding factor on whether I keep or just return it.

Netflix seems to have gotten more strict about use of their dubs since Violet Evergarden. Sentai had to produce an all new dub of Baki because they couldn’t get the Netflix dub, despite it being very well received.

The cost Netflix was charging for the dub was too high for Sentai. It was cheaper for them to redub it in-house.

It sucks because I genuinely enjoy the Netflix dub for Eva. Now it's gonna be lost media whenever Netflix loses the rights.

It’s possible that the rights will revert to Khara after their license expires, and be used on any future releases after that.

(sub guy here)

Not gonna lie. All this dub conversation makes me wish the forum had a dedicated thread for dub fans. I keep seeing this one get bumped and my hopes for an announcement rise. Then I open it and it's just more dub talk.

Slightly off topic, but just saw the fourth Eva film will be on Amazon Prime. Since it seems Funimation has lost the license to the films, do we know if the first two films might be picked up by someone else or are those headed to Amazon.

Also, should we not expect a physical release of the 4th film since it's premiering on Amazon Prime?

I'm pretty sure it was ripped and uploaded to torrent trackers soon after it came out. It shouldn't be hard to find even after it leaves Netflix. Officially unavailable =/= "lost media"
