This is the exact reason I abandoned my idea to go "all in" with online movies. There's no reliability and the target audience also doesn't care.

Yes, this happened in November and hasn’t returned since unfortunately. See post 13788 in the iTunes 4K thread.

At one time I had no UHD BD and had planned to buy all my movies online but my copy of Skyfall 4K reverted to HD and the other Craig's followed for a few weeks before updating to 4K. This was temporary but you know I didn't like it. The problem is your average movie consumer doesn't notice or give a damn about stuff like that so it's going to take a while before people realize there really is a problem with this new online movie thing.
I mostly use Vudu, but I have not noticed any movies dropping from 4K to HD, even temporarily. I have had some digital movies upgrade automatically from HD to 4K. To be fair, I have never seen a disc do that.

Yeah I haven't had that happen to me yet with Vudu. I have quite a bit of my digital codes redeemed in there. If I were going to stake my collection on any online service, I would go with Vudu since they support HDR10 (my TV doesn't have Dolby Vision) and their app works on all my Android devices. Apple seems like they support Dolby Vision only on quite a few things and that whole "stuff reverting to HD once in awhile" is annoying af.

I would like to add at the minimum a Dolby Atmos Soundbar to my setup this year. I just don't really have the dedicated space for a full 7.1 setup. But my next house WILL have a dedicated theater room.
Great job! I am glad that someone took up the slack for me and then some.

319 new discs is quite the haul; did you have to buy new shelves to accommodate them? I always need more shelves.

Dune (2021) review up at High-Def Digest and rated as “Must Own” here.

For westerns fans, Old Henry received a “Highly Recommended” here. gotmule alerted me to this one and it was a blind buy. Glad to have it in the library.

So, I’m basing it on the presumption that carbon taxes don’t work and going for the carbon rationing.

It does not matter if we call it a carbon tax/credit, carbon rationing.....

let me go with a simple example,

if the price gas goes up Joe might say it is too expensive to drive (or I will drive less) because I can't afford it, while Richie might say who cares I will still drive as much

If there is a restriction to X gallons of gas Joe might say I have to cut down my driving, while Richie might say who cares i will buy some of Joe's rations.

both scenarios are the same in the end. I like the idea of a base tax (i.e. X per gallon of oil, y per coal, z per natural gaz....) because that way it is applied equitably and fairly (i.e. the amount of oil needed to make the plastic to make the BD will be accounted for.... on the other hand in Scotland https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-59837782 where . You keep un bringing up electricity but in Scotland https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-56530424 98.6% came from renewables so why should it be the same as people in other parts of the UK where their electricity comes mostly from fossil fuels i.e. the UK as a whole is under 50% green)

Quote:
In that scenario, are the companies (Netflix, Disney+, movie studios) rationed themselves? It costs a lot of carbon just to make one film after all.
agree and it costs a lot of $$$ and how much of either will depend on the film. But with either one it won't be seen by one person that large amount of carbon and $$$ will be distributed.

But let me put it this way on Christmas eve I watched my BD of Christmas vacation with my family if I remember correctly I bought back in 2006 and teh film was made in the 1980's. The large amount of carbon and $ of making the film was done in the 80's long past, the little carbon in making and transporting the BD was done in 2006 and the only carbon today would be for my projector and BD player in electricity which I would need to account for ( but my electricity is 100% green so that would be 0).

[quiote]as individuals, let’s say our yearly allowance is 2.7 tonnes of Carbon (scientists recommend roughly that amount). It’s currently something like 8 tonnes in the U.K. I believe, how the heck do we get down to there without giving up much of the luxuries we currently enjoy?
agree, the problem is me driving my car for 1/2h has a much larger carbon footprint then my part of all the films I watched in 2021 and it is pretty efficient. You care about the nothing and miss the big picture. And fixing that gap won't necessarily be about giving up stuff. when I bought my car I did look at electric cars and hopefully when I need a new car I will deem an electric car worth it (prices need to fall a lot while range extended a bit) but if I can keep my car until that point that will be one way for me to cut down my carbon footprint while I give away nothing.

that is not necessarily accurate. For example california has implemented a cap and trade program which IMHO would fall into what he is talking about. https://ww2.arb.ca.gov/our-work/prog...-trade-program

States do have some powers in those areas.

Yep, I bought a new shelf and now all but one section of shelves is full . Not sure what I'll do when that last bit is gone because it took up the last of the wall space in my media room. I'm already considering building custom shelving on 3 walls to replace the 2 racks.

OK, thanks for checking. Mine is UHD but SDR for The Witcher. Video average 8.47 Mbps, audio 451.7 Kbps. Network bandwidth is 102 Mbps. Get similar video numbers via Nvidia Shield Pro 2019, Netflix server test will show speeds in the 210 to 230 Mbps range on the Pro.

I am a fan of custom shelves as they can maximize space and dress up a collection if done well. What are the round tins on the first shelf? Are they actual film?

Does it work if 10 states do and 40 states don't?

Yes, 35mm trailers. I worked as a projectionist and manager for AMC Theaters for around 11 years and once a movie came out we just threw the trailers away, so I started taking them. I have another whole box in storage I need to pull out to finish filling in the spaces.

Very cool in deed. Great way to personalize your collection. What would be your most treasured trailer?

My grandfather was a projectionist in the 70’s and 80’s.

I don't remember which ones are in storage, but of what I have displayed probably LOTR: Fellowship of the Ring. The rarest one I have is for The Flood, which was renamed to Hard Rain before release. Not a great movie, but cool to have the trailer with the original title.

others with scope screens

How do you all handle scope movies with subtitles? On the Oppo 203 I can move subtitles into the active picture area. The Sony UBP-X1000 and 800 can not do this . Will need to see if the Zidoo Z9X can move subtitles.

I let the subtitles to bleed underneath the image. I blank the top but not the bottom.

the never ending sale of popular new blockbuster titles funds their enterprise well enough that they need not anger their customers with any fees. Every time that they sell a few million digital copies of the latest Marvel pablum it more than keeps their lights on

I just used them as examples to prove that it is far from enough to keep the lights on becasue they closed their lights

I could have been mean spirted and have pointed out that even though

https://ca.news.yahoo.com/nearly-one...221410961.html

"nearly 29% of U.S. Disney+ users that accessed the app between September 1st to September 12th purchased the $30 “Mulan” film"

they did the same with Raya and the Last Dragon, Cruella, Jungle Cruise and Black widow (aka Marvel pablum) and in none of those cases did Disney+ come close to making a profit and if it was not for the money Disney is willing to shell out every month the lights would off.

But then Some might want to dismiss it because it was 30$ for early access and not technically EST and others would pretend I have something against Disney+ (which I don't but we have the numbers and Marvel pablum that supposedly can keep the lights on) and others like you are doing will pretend I mean it as doom and gloom (which I am not they are just the facts unlike your unsupported opinion in this case that is constantly contradicted by the facts)

Quote:
All of the closed digital sellers have been replaced and entities like Movies Anywhere mitigates, somewhat, the risk of losing titles should another digital storefront close.
I remeber when that was said about UV

Quote:
I do not fear for the future of physical media.

neither do I fist and foremost because what ever the future holds, I will be able to watch my films if I want to because they are here in my house.

I have even less concern for the future of digital sellers; they are a fixture on the home entertainment landscape. We won't see wholesale loss of titles as it would seriously undermine consumer confidence.
