What a slate!

Amazing to get confirmation on Crazy Thunder Road and Hiruko the Goblin! Also super-excited about that Obayashi boxset (even if it makes the standalone Hanagatami release kind of a waste).

I think releasing a box set makes perfect sense given it may attract the collector's folks as well. I don't mind double-dipping with regards of Hanagatami if it means this would be the best way to bring more of his other films over to the UK.

Shame TWF didn't get Labyrinth of Cinema assuming the UK license is still available that is.

Yeah, my feeling of "oh, I guess I didn't need to buy Hanagatami" was immediately overwhelmed/drowned out by my excitement for the new release. I've seen these films discussed as a trilogy so it makes perfect sense to release them together. I watched Labyrinth of Cinema, I didn't love it as much as Hanagatami, but I haven't been able to see Casting Blossoms or Seven Weeks, so I'm especially excited for those.

Crazy Thunder Road is another blind-buy I'm hugely excited for. The Toyoda set is also a definite all-blind buy. Funky Forest too except I gotta go for the Region A release.

Given what has been said about BBFC costs before I'm really surprised and happy to be getting those three as a set. I know they've been playing together elsewhere in the world online but I hadn't seen an English friendly disc release so if a double dip is what it takes to see the other two then I'm in.

Good luck getting anything out of MUBI.

Crescendo House will be releasing an all-region Labyrinth of Cinema in the US, that will be the best bet.

That's bloody annoying as they have the UK rights to Paul Verhoeven's Nunsploitation film Benedetta.

Benedetta might have a slightly better chance because, if I recall an article I read correctly, MUBI also have proper theatrical distribution rights for that one. Most, if not all, of their measly Blu-ray offerings (13 titles so far by my counting) were previously theatrically distributed by MUBI before being released physically, i.e., Border, Suspiria, the upcoming First Cow, Beanpole, Ema, Under the Silver Lake, Bacurau.

This line-up is insane! It's the first time I've ever seen such an announcement and been sure I will buy all of them.

I reckon the Verhoeven film will have its UK premier at the BFI London Film Festival in October before finding some kind of cinema release next year probably. The ONLY film that premiered at Cannes that I know will have a cinema release (in September from what I've read) BEFORE the LFF is that Leos Carax (Sparks written) one where Adam Driver sings while performing oral sex.

Anyway I'm looking forward to the Verhoeven film however I get to see it.

Funuke’s now available to pre order on Arrow and Terracotta’s websites.

I’m really psyched for all these releases, especially Obayashi, Toyoda and Funky Forest, is there a rough time frame for when we can expect to get our hands on them, TWF?

Not sure which is hornier, lesbian nuns or Adam Driver cunnilingus

I hate waiting until 2022 for films though, especially knowing stuff like Deep Water from Disney is just sitting on a shelf.

Stillwater screened at Cannes, Limitless/Unlimited previews on 3rd and wide on 6th August.

toyoda will be next. Maybe early October (or even late September if things go well).
There'll actually be his latest film 'go seppuku yourselves' in the box too, but didn't want to announce it as Japan Cuts will play it worldwide on their online festival next month.

After that will probably be 'beyond the infinite', but that depends on if it gets selected to another UK festival so that could be november or december.

for funky/warped, making loads of new bonus features, so depends on when they get made and subtitled, so that's also up in the air.

Obayashi could be finished earlier, but the toyoda set will cost so much money to make that I need to keep space open between releasing it and obayashi and both crazy expensive outlays. If I can get toyoda out late september and funky/warped materials not done in time, plus beyond gets out in november, then theoretically obayashi could be december.

though i realise while writing all this that there's a lot of 'ifs' in there, so don't quote me on it!

Upon having a quick read of the synopsis on the Japan Cuts site, including the film with the 2005-2020 Box actually makes a lot of sense since the festival mentions it's part of the director's "Resurrection" trilogy with Wolf’s Calling and The Day of Destruction, so that's neat.

actually, the box is called 2005-2021 but wanted to wait til the festival had gotten rolling before putting that out too.
Was a very late addition to the set!

I'm crazy excited for Crazy Thunder Road and the Obayashi Trilogy set. I won't repost my full thoughts on Hanagatami but I was really bowled over by it and it only grows in my estimations with time. I've read great things about the other two parts of the trilogy, so I'm very pleased that Third Window are releasing it.

I know the BBFC costs are already going to be hefty, so I won't expect too much in the way of extras but his Japanese Wikipedia page lists a few TV documentaries he was the subject of over that time period that would be interesting to see.
