BJ's Wholesale Club The Gift

So Vilya asked me to try DVD playback on the UB9000 and I decided to go with The Gift (2000). In settings I had Dolby Digital and Dolby Surround. I went with Dolby Surround knowing that would be the lossless PCM track.

I really enjoyed seeing this one again as it had been too long. I didn't see problems with the playback of either the Audio or Video.

The Gift (2000)
Thanks for checking! So many of our members have said that the Panasonic 4K disc players are terrible with DVD playback; it's good to hear a dissenting opinion.

I have that DVD, too!

The Gift is one of Sam Raimi's best and underrated films. I still have the Japanese HD-DVD import of that. I don't even think it ever got a domestic BD release. Think A Simple Plan is also one of Sam Raimi's best films and I have the German BD import of that. Makes for a great "underrated films of Sam Raimi" double-feature.

Just in case you have not read the review at Secret's, a two part here. IIRC, the 9000 is not very good as a media player. Matters not to me because I have the Oppo, Shield and Zidoo Z9X. A Zappiti Neo is on order.

I imported the Via Vision release of The Gift but haven't gotten around to watching it yet.

I had been itching for NVIDIA to take my money and put out an updated SHIELD last year. I have two 2017 models and, until very recently had been so happy with them that I would have upgraded the one In my HT just to support a company that supports its product as long as they do.

Unfortunately, their continued effort to support legacy gear maybe the reason I move on. The recent update to ANDROID 11 has been a bit of a fiasco.

That, coupled with some deficiencies I came across when dialing in my new JVC projector had me researching the ZIDOO box.

With the NVIDIA team continuing support and my learning more how to get what I want out of my JVC, I've calmed a bit of the immediate need to make a change.

It seems that some of the features that i'd like to gain (better tone mapping etc) would require a move away from KODI (that my whole family is used to) towards the ZIDOO proprietary player.

If you don't mind me asking.. what is your use case? Is there a reason you maintain both? If you had to keep just one, which would you choose and why?

Have not updated mine and do not plan to do so unless forced to. It is used only for streaming. It is the 2019 Pro model.

Never cared for XBMC (Kodi) or Plex. Tried Infuse on the ATV4K (2021) but it can not do lossless audio so it is out as a media player as well. IMO, the primary purpose of the Shield is streaming and it works fairly well for me. The Zidoo primary purpose is a media player and that is the most important aspect for me. Same for the Zappiti.

Use case: I am in the process of transitioning from spinning disc to spinning disk. On the drawing board is a 8 bay NAS with 8 14TB drives in RAID 5, this will give me 98TB of usable space. Time to get serious with a big NAS for A/V. I’ve had a small (Synology) NAS for many years for personal data, have several TB’s of A/V content connected to the NAS via USB HDD’s.

For the NAS, ...

I went there and back again. I had a 40TB server but it's all so time and energy consuming.

This is why I bought a better disc player. I have my discs well organized and if they are clean they play back without issue. If they aren't going to play correctly I would rather know about it because I would replace or discard any of them that are damaged.

I am going to measure the electricity use of one of the NAS units (I was using 4) just to know what I'm saving now that I don't maintain the 40TB server.

As always,.... my mind is subject to change.

Over the weekend I watched Umma and The Lost City in theaters (the latter in Dolby Cinema). Umma was a pretty generic horror movie but The Lost City was fun and it looked great in Dolby.

Went to my local shop and rented The Last Waltz & Le Circle Rouge 4K discs. Also rented Manhunter on BD, because they have the Shout Factory edition that is long OOP and don't own that one. How I missed buying it is beyond me.

Though I haven't seen GI Jane.

My guess it he took it as a jab at her health problems.

Thankfully, there is no such thing as bad press.
Not true in Hollywood as Charlie Sheen, Micheal Jackson, Jonney Depp, Bill Cosby, Vic Mignogna and Robert Downey jr can tell you. It's just to small of an oligopoly. If Will starts looking unstable his career might be over because hes simply to much of a liability to make a film with him just like Sheen and Downey (downeys recovey was a bit of a miracle).

In America they could charge him. Its a charge against the state not rock so Will could be charged. This sort of situation unfolds more often in domestic abuse cases where the victim is uncooperative.
Overall they definitely have enough evidence to charge him even without Chris Rock.

The reason they are not I believe is a few fold. One is that Will Smith and Chris rock are A list actors and the case will be a giant media circus. The fine Will Smith would receive would probably be like probation and anger management classes. Chris wasn't hurt.

The police could charge Will but he would likely just get a slap on the wrist while exposing the police to blow back so why bother.

Forgot to mention the Dolby VS10 engine in the Realtek RTD1619DR based players, may or may not be of interest to you. IIRC the Shield Pro does not do 3D, the media players of interest do. AFAIK these media players do not have dual decoders so they can not decode Dolby Vision FEL like a UHD BD player with DV can. markswift2003 at AVS showed this as a very minor problem. For projector people it should be a nonissue.

You are correct in your assessment of why he won't be charged.

I don't want to derail a thread or get banned, but you can't suck and blow at the same time. There's no other country on earth that even pays lip service to the idea of the rule of law in which a person can indisbutably commit a crime in front of thousands of first person eye witnesses AND recorded for posterity in which he wouldn't be charged.

It's a fundamental difference between the US and every other modern western democracy. Only in America ...LOL..

You simply can't even pay lips service to the notion of "equal application of the law" going forward. Everyone sitting in a comedy club that doesn't like a joke should have free range to go up and assault the comic because this is now the new norm...

Anyone watch the show Vikings? Deep Discount has a good deal on the entire set, but am on the fence about it. Any nudge either way would be appreciated.

The 8 bay NAS will use 60 watts + 48 watts for 8 HDD’s, total 108 watts in use. It will be in standby when not in use. Have always had my current Synology go to standby after a period of no use. Have the attached USB drives housed in Inateck FE3001 enclosures and they too will sleep when not in use.

That's the one I have, too, but that's the only one I own today. I remember back in the early 2000's Anchor Bay released a phenomenal DVD set, with tons of ephemera. It had a manila folder filled with "evidence" photographs. Such a great set for the time.
