Probably means the gap between 24 and 25 won't be large at all.

Can't wait for this, 2015 is looking to be an epic year for movies. So glad Mendes is back and Penelope Cruz is perfect for the Bond girl

I really hope Roger Deakins returns as well, he did an amazing job on Skyfall.

Doesn't a Bond girl supposed to be hot? Penelope Cruz looks like a horse.

Given that I thought Skyfall was pretty lousy I'm not keen on this announcement - Mendes is a good director but a poor choice for a Bond film. And just to make matters worse the Skyfall writer is going to pen Bond 24 and Penny Cruz is going to be in it? Oh dear.

I'm still waiting for them to surpass the mostly excellent Casino Royale.

Totally agreed. He deserved an Oscar for Skyfall! Or hell, any movie at this point.

John Logan was only 1 writer on Skyfall. Neal Purvis and Robert Wade - who have had their names on the scripts since The World Is Not Enough - are finally out of the picture so we have yet to see how Logan will fare on his own. I have confidence in him, though.

I agree, but that's not a knock on Skyfall. Casino Royale was one of the best entries in the series.

Should have gotten one for the silhouette fight alone.

OK, I have already said that I'm skeptical of Cruz as a Bond Girl, but really man, there is no reason to be mean!

Sam Mendes next Bond film= Amazing. If I'm correct Sam Mendes will be the first director to film back to back Bond films since Terence Young direct both Dr. No and From Russia with Love.

Actually it was John Glen, doing the 2 Dalton films.

Glen actually directed every Bond movie made in the eighties...five movies back-to-back.

Lewis Gilbert did TSWLM and Moonraker back-to-back and Guy Hamilton did three consecutive Bond films: DAF, LALD and TMWTGG.

If anything sticking with the same director for a while was more of the norm, at least pre-Brosnan.

Yes, yes and a huge, massive YES. Deakins is a huge part of what made Skyfall so good. I assume Mendes will ask him back. I wouldn't mind Thomas Newman coming back to score it either, I thought he did an excellent job but I wouldn't mind the return of David Arnold either.

Mendes returning is brilliant news. I agree that Skyfall wsn't quite as good as Casino Royale but it was fantastic and I look forward to seeing what this team come up with next, especially with Q, Moneypenny and the new M (Fiennes is perfect for that role) all in place.

Are you kidding? It may not have been as vibrant as the Shanghai stuff but the Scotland scenes were just as beautifully shot. The approach across the rugged landscape, the blue evening tint as they prepared and especially the fire-lit scenes after the explosions (also making incredible use of silhouettes) - all just as good as anything in the first half.

[Show spoiler]

The older crowd especially (of which I'm not one!) seemed to appreciate it anywya, so many came out talking about how great Scotland looked and how "it was like you were really there", etc. This might not be splashy and in your face but it captures the bleak rugged beauty of Scotland perfectly:
