I have both.

the second "remaster" was bought from rightstuf with the Paul Champagne [scratches easily as hell] and the Perfect Collection box by itself which does not have a UPC on it. Also have a non UPC cover of Collection 2 and one with the UPC on it. Thats newer cover and insert to match the later editions. All from the same order.

Not sure how it was stealth release unless you don't exactly follow Eva.

Bad news about Episode 16 so as it turns out it won't be in high definition:

Quote:
The original film for episode 16 no longer exists, so this set uses an upconverted version of the SD master for that episode.

My ****! I'd like to get my hands on that version just to see how badly it is. But buying it now is impossible to tell 'cause they all have the same cover.

Do you happen to have it?

Which is not really a surprise, as even for the 2003 Renewal DVD set they had to resort to an 35mm internegative source for that episode as the original 16mm negatives were lost.

Yes, I have both copies and the original one is exceedingly bad in comparison.

As for finding the original one, it's easy to tell the difference using just the cover itself as seen below. That, and 99.9% of copies of Collection 0:1 that are sold by itself (i.e. not together with the other 7 volumes) are of the original pressing.

Original DVD (2000) ---------------------- Re-release DVD (2002)

What happened to the original film? Not really like the Japanese to lose something so important. I'm sure there's always one eye on future home media when they're producing anime assets, but even more so with something as marketable as Eva - everyone knew it was going to be huge when it first came out.

Disappointing, but at this point unavoidable and does nothing to dampen my enthusiasm

Actually from what I've heard (Though I can't verify the info), Gainax was worried that Eva was going to bankrupt them.

Anyway, unfortunately many times the Japanese don't take care of the film to many shows very well. Hell just ask Toei Animation, who has apparently in the past left cels right in sunlight. This I think can be seen in one of the DBZ BD documentaries, can't remember where I was first shown that.

Also...

Thanks for that

Disappointing. I can perhaps see how that would be the case in the 70s and 80s but I'd have thought that by 90s they'd have had a better grasp of how important the original assets might have been, but clearly not, or certainly not across the board at least.

Oh well, luckily, with Eva, it's not a *huge* problem.

It's not like Gainax was a huge, well-run company at the time. Gainax circa 1995 was still in many ways just Daicon Film with a bigger budget, lacking a rigid corporate culture and/or administrative infrastructure.

I'm no Robert Harris, but couldn't they have done a new HD scan of the interneg or did they junk that after making the SD master?

If we're very lucky, the booklet that comes with the Blu-ray box may address that.

Here's a LINK to what Gainax said in the booklets for the Platinum/Renewal DVDs regarding remastering the footage back in 2003...

The Minna no Eva Fan site mentions that the latest Newtype issue has an article about the BD restoration. It may possibly cover the episode 16 restoration but the photo is too blurry to read any part of the main article.

Only a few days left. This better be worth it, first time I'm blind buying a Blu-Ray box with no good sample of how it looks in HD .

The quicker I have HD footage for screenshots, the quicker I can finish what I have planned for the covers I'll be housing the remuxed (assuming I can pull it off) discs with though so I'm excited on that front. Slightly regretting shipping it with Mai Hime due to the sheer blow it will land on my bank account (as my work contract finished one week earlier than I had planned so I don't have the amount of cash money I had been hoping for).

That is the one thing that baffles me regarding the Eva BD box. Back in 2003 during the build-up towards the "Renewal" DVD box set, Gainax / King Records released the "01 Test-Type" DVD containing the finished version of the first episode a full 3 months before the box itself was put on sale. This time there's no previews, hardly any information on Newtype, nothing much at all except a list of specs and bonus features.

I had half a mind to keep my incoming copy sealed until there's a consensus regarding its quality, but there's no other way to get the original theatrical version of Evangelion:Death (which was a "holy grail" for many Eva fans for 15 years now) so there's really no choice for me...

If you can read Japanese, there is a great interview with The Sony PCL members that worked on the DVD and BD restoration. They are the same team that worked on the 2003 box as well as the Renewal releases so if you liked that release, you'll probably like this one. I'll try to post highlights later but it took them 3-4 days to color correct each episode from the telecine frame by frame using the notes from the 2003 restoration (started in 2001), but they also discovered a lot of new issues with going HD, such as Ritsuko's eyebrows, so they had to speak with King Records and former (?) Gainax members about how to correct things or leave them alone. Definitely reads like a labor love. The project took five years to complete. Also covers the TV broadcast version and how neither King Records nor Tokyo TV really knew which tapes were the original broadcast (a Sony PCL member had VHS copies of the original broadcast so they used that to compare against).

So I'm doing something similar. I'm extracting the subtitles that are found in the Platinum Collection done by ADV. My concern, however, is with the timing of the subs. I'm hoping the BD's will synch up with the ADV DVD's. What approach are you taking? I've never had to do anything like this before, but it's NGE...so yeah.
