Or, it may even be Paramount to start with.

They may make a deal for physical rights, in addition to theatrical.

It may play theaters, then be on Apple, then be on physical media.

I'd love its physical release to be on Criterion, at least eventually.

So exciting to know it's basically completed, and have more solid dates to look forward to.

Cannes in May, and the October release dates are something real and tangible, now.

And I'm looking forward to seeing this one on a big theater screen for the first time. I'll actually go back out to a theater for that.

I've only been to a theater once in almost three and a half years. (Since Nov. 2019). I finally went out just once last year, for "Crimes of the Future". This Scorsese film may well be the next time.

I expected something like late November or December, October isn't exactly the prime month you'd release something pushing for awards.

They could always push it back tho, its Cannes reception will likely tell us if it's an awards film or not.

Funny enough, in that situation I actually think the early release contributed to its success. Because the movie is so weird and out there I never would have expected the Academy to embrace it if it came out really close to the awards.

But because it had pretty much a full year of everyone singing its praises and loving it, it simply couldn't be ignored.

Martin Scorsese's "The Departed" opened on Oct.6, 2006.

It went on to win Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Editing, and, for the first and (so far) only time, Best Director for Scorsese.

Casino should’ve gotten those Oscar nominations (most or some of which Goodfellas won) instead of The Departed. And Mr. Scorsese should’ve won best director Oscar for Goodfellas and Casino, not The Departed.

Goodfellas, Casino and The Departed did not compete against one another at the Oscars, so your post makes zero sense.

What I meant was the positive recognition for The Departed in 2006 was much higher than Casino in 1995. Casino should’ve gotten that praise and those award nominations and win in 1996, not The Departed in 2007.
