I’ve tried SO HARD. I like Cronenberg, I love Michael Ironside, the concept is wicked, but (outside of B-grade crap on the level of FROM JUSTIN TO KELLY or SHARKNADO) Stephen Lack’s lead performance has simply got to be the most excruciating, utterly amateur one I’ve ever beheld in an A-grade film and, due to it, I always tap out about halfway through. I just can’t find a way to endure it. The fact that Cronenberg went from something with this level of ‘middle school play’ thespianism to the level of exceptional, nuanced, brimming-with-pathos acting found in THE DEAD ZONE a mere two years later astounds me. SCANNERS, to me, is maybe the pinnacle example of a superb concept in need of a a superior remake. I know a statement like that rubs Cronenberg acolytes the wrong way (I relate to that feeling when people say Spielberg hasn’t made a truly great film since the ‘90s), but it’s the truth of it for me. Hell, let Cronenberg himself remake it. Just hire a much, much better casting director this time, please.

I can’t be the only one who always thought Stephen Lack’s performance was intentional. They state that most scanners have antisocial, perhaps autistic personalities. I think he bounces off Revok and the sculptor well.

It’s not like he’s just incapable of inflection, if you ever happened to have seen Larry Cohen’s Perfect Strangers.

I don’t know if he’s a bad actor or if he just gave a bad performance, but he utterly kills SCANNERS for me. Others’ mileage may vary.

It doesn't help that the rights to his most famous/popular films are all over the place though, literally. Miramax or TWC have several of them but not all are with the same video distributor and that's just in the US, those same films have yet different distributors overseas. Basically it means that the US editions are almost like indie releases, i.e. that they're meant for just this one territory.

Sony have Django & OUATIH and Universal the Basterds which tidies those distribution situations up a bit, but Arrow have been touting their edition of IB for like a couple of years now and that may have influenced what Universal do with it.

But yeah, he kinda hates modern video so I'm guessing that him wanting to remaster these (which would in turn light a fire under the distributors' asses) is way down on his list of priorities.

He gives a perfectly naturalistic performance in Dead Ringers as well. I personally believe it was a stylistic choice by Cronenberg to make his character seem really off-kilter.

That’s very possible and totally fair. If so, Cronenberg made the wrong choice, IMO. Even the greatest director in history can be accused of that (I’m looking at Spielberg and his eleventh hour change to the ending of THE TERMINAL which completely torpedoed it).

“Lack”. If ever there was a more appropriate last name, I’ve never encountered it.

Big fan of Scanners. Cronenberg is one of my favorite directors. Not seeing the connection to Inglorious Basterds.

Well when it's a disc that doesn't exist and may as well be wish list.

Django Unchained is only Sony internationally, but that hasn't stopped Almost Famous 4K.

I've loved a lot of 00s/10s Spielberg so I think he still has it.

I can say with absolute authority that noone gets to post something like that at blu-ray.com without a profound sense of irony.
