I’ve tried SO HARD. I like Cronenberg, I love Michael Ironside, the concept is wicked, but (outside of B-grade crap on the level of FROM JUSTIN TO KELLY or SHARKNADO) Stephen Lack’s lead performance has simply got to be the most excruciating, utterly amateur one I’ve ever beheld in an A-grade film and, due to it, I always tap out about halfway through. I just can’t find a way to endure it. The fact that Cronenberg went from something with this level of ‘middle school play’ thespianism to the level of exceptional, nuanced, brimming-with-pathos acting found in THE DEAD ZONE a mere two years later astounds me. SCANNERS, to me, is maybe the pinnacle example of a superb concept in need of a a superior remake. I know a statement like that rubs Cronenberg acolytes the wrong way (I relate to that feeling when people say Spielberg hasn’t made a truly great film since the ‘90s), but it’s the truth of it for me. Hell, let Cronenberg himself remake it. Just hire a much, much better casting director this time, please.

I can’t be the only one who always thought Stephen Lack’s performance was intentional. They state that most scanners have antisocial, perhaps autistic personalities. I think he bounces off Revok and the sculptor well.
It’s not like he’s just incapable of inflection, if you ever happened to have seen Larry Cohen’s Perfect Strangers. Last edited by El Sleezo; 06-13-2021 at 11:33 PM. |

Sony have Django & OUATIH and Universal the Basterds which tidies those distribution situations up a bit, but Arrow have been touting their edition of IB for like a couple of years now and that may have influenced what Universal do with it. But yeah, he kinda hates modern video so I'm guessing that him wanting to remaster these (which would in turn light a fire under the distributors' asses) is way down on his list of priorities. |

Sometimes when I have a headache my head too explodes
Django Unchained is only Sony internationally, but that hasn't stopped Almost Famous 4K. I've loved a lot of 00s/10s Spielberg so I think he still has it. |
