Every freeze frame when I paused during the

scene had a lot of smeary bits, for example:

MGM 2011 BD:

KL 2021 4K UHD:

Noticably the new transfer's grain structure is better than the old MGM HD transfer, as well as really given a great boost from HDR.

MGM 2011 BD:

KL 2021 4K UHD:

(For some reason this shot looks pretty faded in the pic, the colors are closer to the old disc, but even richer in range)

I didn't take note of the audio. The 5.1 tracks sounded the same to my ears, but I didn't even bother to switch to the 2.0 track on the 4K, nor the alternate English audio on the MGM BD. I'm going to spend more time with the disc this week or next weekend and give the full thing a watch, I'll update accordingly.

Pictures taken on my Google Pixel 4a (12.2 MGP, HDR) camera.
Even with phone pictures the grain structure looks bad. I’ll wait until someone else (likely from an international market) licenses the restoration and hopefully releases a better encode. Did you watch it in DV or plain HDR10?

This does not bode well for The Great Escape and the other 4Ks Kino has announced though. Shame.

Those were taken with the film playing in HDR10. I don't feel guilty for buying The Great Escape and Some Like it Hot from Criterion less than a year ago now.

I think a lot of it comes down to many of these people simply not seeing these compression issues when watching the actual discs. Halloween for example. I've been reading it has awful compression. I watched it in HDR-10 on a 51-inch set from about 8 feet away and didn't notice any issues. Definitely not saying they're not there, of course. Maybe if I watched on a 77 inch OLED the issues would become glaringly obvious? Or maybe not. But I've noticed a tendency of some to analyze screen caps from Capsaholic in minute detail and if they see anything that looks like compression noise they're immediately crying foul.

Shout Halloween's HDR10 layer is one of the worst encodes I've seen in years outside of a StudioCanal joint, and that's from viewing it in motion on a 65" from 7ft away.

Seriously? It would be great if we could stop derailing this critical thread with random conversations about the disc in motion, and get back to the proper screencap analysis. Sheesh!

Even got me doing it. More troublesome than the encode, when I compared the Kino SOTL 4k with the Kino Body Snatchers 4k, I immediately noticed that in terms of consistency, whomever worked on the 4k Body Snatchers master forgot to add the green tint to the first 20 minutes…..

You're being really critical of the disc instead of being grateful that you had to spend $30!!!!

I hope we at least got a proper fold-down of that bulky 5.1 audio. It’s hard to say, sounded fine on my iPad.

You're supposed to enjoy it topped. If you send it back you'll single handedly kill physical media. You're post alone caused Three independent labels and a major film studio to close down.

Guys on Reddit like the Dolby transfer. So the reviewers. Here I find a completely different opinion ... Can anyone that actually seen this on Dolby Vision comment on this transfer please? Thank you .

Amazon emailed me for the first time ever with one of those "we can't get it right now even though we promised we would, you still want this?" emails. I most likely won't be watching this in Dolby Vision since I have it disabled on the player attached to my projector (I do have an HD Fury device that will allow the projector to use it, it's just... you need brightness with a projector, and DV ain't that.)

Am I understanding that this is a strong remaster with a poorly compressed encode? I have the Shout Blu-ray already and would love to upgrade from that already fantastic disc since this is one of my faves, but if it's not an upgrade, save me the scrilla!

That’s the other thing. Even if the Dolby Vision layer fixes a lot of the compression errors, I am still planning to get a projector in the future. And since no projector officially supports DV, I’d have to rely on the HDR10 layer only. Now imagine blowing this disc up on a 100+in screen? The compression would look horrendous.

And again, other people just don’t have a display with DV, or a player that can do DV, or they might switch to a display that doesn’t do DV in the future.

The disc should look good in HDR10, not just in DV.
