Upon advice from Callas01, I listened to Energy speakers, and ended up ordering RC70's. What's great about these is that the whole family seems to like it, while each of the other ones I was auditioning had certain things that someone did not like.

Vanns just shipped my RC70's. Really excited to eventually put them into the basement HT, which will be constructed very soon. Now I have to quickly finalize the room layout, which will somewhat depends on how much clearance I need to give to these towers.

1. I've read multiple times that one got to really place them away from the wall because of the rear ports. I've heard 18" is the minimum. What's the reason for that? Any experiences with smaller clearance, like 12"? 12" is what recommended in your RC owners manual. so you should be fine that way.

2. What effects does the provided rear port plugs have? allow you to control the bass sounds in a small room or in situations where they many be in a corner or cannot be placed 12"s from the wall

3. Will adding sound absorbing panel on the front wall and bass traps at the corner help reduce the required clearance? really they help to reduce the reverb and echos in some applications

Thanks very much.
energy recommends them to be at least 6 feet apart and for you to sit back 1.5 times the distance they are apart. Traditionally 6-8 feet apart and sit 9-12 back.

What were some of the other speakers you auditioned and what didn't you like about them?

Dude that IS a hot deal! Free shipping too in the states.

Considering I paid a total of $400 CAD for mine total after everything a year ago, and thought that was great, this in the end will probably work out about the same, if not cheaper.

Hi, Callas01:
I had thespeakercompany.com TST2 and TC2, Ascend Audio CMT340 main and center, and briefly Polk TSI300. The TST2's are decent speakers to me. The mid range sounds very rich, and the dialogue seems to be the very natural and clear on the TC2. The Ascends have wider sound stage, and slightly more detailed than TST2. Neither is as detailed, refined, smooth, rich, and deep as the Energy I listened to.

Thanks for all your advice.

This deal is amazing anyone looking for a sub, below 500$ this sub is one of the best bang for the buck if not the best. For 299$ Wow still sells for 900$ here.

Some people prefer boomier for HT, if you're looking for real SQ this is it.

Dylan I'm must admit I'm jealous of yours even tho I have something decent on hand.

Are you planning to add and LCR to your RC-70?

Man those speakers in their price range forget it nothing comes close in terms of sound quality. Yes the sound is very rich, natural , well balance and sounds very lifelike. A lot of expert reviews are singing the praise of RC series.

I also read that under 1000$ on the RC-10 that competition had alot of catching up to do back in 2006. I'm still not sure if anyone has acheive their SQ for this price range.

Wasn't planning to get the RC's. I heared the C300's. The deal from Vanns.com on rosenut lured me into thinking about the higher line. So I called, thinking to get the RC50 pair for $800, and ended up getting RC70 for the same price as part of the 5.0 bundle.

Well, all this started with Callas01 persuading me into trying the Energy speakers. I am really glad I listened to him and went to the dealer that day. The other speakers I tried are OK, but I always felt there was something missing. I think I found what I was looking for.

I will be back with pictures and of course more questions.

There is probably a thread like this elsewhere, but this one concerns only Energy owners:

I'm interested in whats kind of music you all listen to and which artists/bands complement the sound of your Energy speakers the most! I know ideally a good speaker should sound good for everything, and sources need to be the same to make a good comparison, but I notice certain types of music seem to sound better than others on my speakers.

Some of the music I listen to regularly on my c-500s/ ESW V10 in 2 channel is:

Van Halen
Weezer
Slayer
Lamb of God
Soundgarden
Korn
Alice in Chains
Hendrix
Megadeth
Tool
Limp Bizkit
Pantera
The Offspring
Chickenfoot (Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony, Joe Satriani, Chad Smith)
Soulfly
Jeff Healey
Arsis
Foo fighters

Everything sounds good enough on these speakers, but the c-500s/v10 combo seems to sound best for blues oriented tunes. Stuff like Stevie Ray Vaughn, Buddy Guy, Jeff Healey (the older stuff not the newer jazz stuff), Hendrix. The lows and upper mids in those types of music really seem to shine through. Like I can hear every note of the bass guitar loud enough to rumble my house, at the same time as being able to hear every note of a crazy guitar solo. The only thing that stands out to me as not being great on the c-500s, is the highest frequencies produced by the percussion.

Anyway, it would be interesting to see what you guys think sounds best on your speakers.

interesting Dylan.....

I listen to a large variety of music on them...
Tori Amos
John Mayer
Rise Against
Michael Jackson
Incubus
Foo Fighters
Rap/Hip Hop
Pop
Alternative
Blues

I really like how the Energys handle all of it. I really like how piano and bluesy guitars sound. I think just because of these speakers I am actually listening to music I wouldn't have before(ie, Amos & Mayer). I really enjoy how all music sounds on these speakers and you can listen to music for hours without getting worn out with it.. I usually find that I run out of music to play before getting tired of listening to it.

I love how movies have detail and power, but aren't always up in your face either. There is a little bit of that impact you get from a brighter speaker missing, but I wouldn't trade that for the fatiguing sounds of the brighter speakers. Like with KEFs, I was watching AVP Requiem, and yes there was that in your face sound, but after 30 minutes into the movie I was getting exhausted listening to them. The Energys are so smooth and well rounded that they are really great in all environments.

Darn it callas, why do such insane deals like these always pop up after I make a purchase elsewhere. Oh, such bad timing. But thanks for the info anyway.

Opera on Blu-ray:

Mozart - Cosi fan tutte
Mozart - Die Zauberflote (ROH)
Mozart - Don Giovanni
Mozart - Le nozze di Figaro
Bizet - Carmen (Glyndebourne)
Puccini - La Boheme
Rossini - La Cenerentola
Strauss - Die Fledermaus
Verdi - Rigoletto
Verdi - Il trovatore (ROH)
Wagner: Gotterdammerung
Wagner: Die Walkure
Wagner: Lohengrin

Opera on DVD:

Verdi - Aida
Verdi - La Traviata
Wagner: The Ring Cycle complete
Wagner: Tannhauser

Ballet (Blu-ray):

Tchaikovsky - Swan Lake

A tenor or soprano performing a difficult aria can place the highest demands on any speaker system. I am simply blown away by how well my C-300s along with the rest of my speakers reproduce those in detail, clarity, presence, and with a wide sound stage that it's almost like being at a live performance.

OK, updated my gallery.
So far I'm lovin' the C500's in just the 2.1 mode for music. Played Radiohead the other night and I couldn't get over how clear the music was. I loved picking apart all the instruments and subtleties. There were times I thought my center channel was on because of how great the sound stage was and how all the music was pinpointed right at my ears.

As for HT, I really haven't watched a movie in a while. I plan on picking up Band of Brothers on BR however. I heard that was amazing on BR.

And yes I still need to scrap the Sony receiver

I know exactly what you mean and I agree. My philosphy on TV's is very similar to this actually, which is why I went with the Panny plasma. I like my music and my tvs to be mellow, smooth and realistic I guess you can say. But that's a different story for a different thread.

This is a thread for Energy Speaker owners I was getting off topics once and I mentionned it.

Callas told me that you can talk what ever you want on this thread.

We spoke receivers with Stang alot so We all try to help each other to figure out other fellow Energy owner's needs.

I feel that this is the thread for Energys owners, we need to and should be able to discuss not just speakers but all things related to one another and our HT.

BTW... I just got a new car... 2009 Hyundai Elantra... pretty nice car... does Energy make car speakers

I wonder if Energy makes boat speakers. It would be so cool listening to Handel's Water Music while floating on the water.
