I have the 55" version of that TV. The only alternative to the situation you describe that I've been able to figure out is to use the Advanced Contrast Enhancer setting. I have it on Medium for 4K/UHD discs. The ACE is lacking in that sometimes it gets confused and darkens and brightens the same scene but this to me is preferable than having dark scenes completely washed out all of the time. It's a compromise with this TV. Let me know if you come up with a better solution.

I have the 55 inch version of the 850D, turn off the Advance Contrast Enhancer mode in the picture settings on the TV and that should fix your problem.

I’ll have to try either turning ACE to medium, or turning it off.

I've noticed that when I have ACE turned on (HDR picture mode on the tv turns it on at the low setting by default) the flashlighting happens mostly during HDR shows like Daredevil on netflix but it doesn't happen on a lot of UHD blu-rays with HDR that I have. So the flashlighting can be dependant upon the way the source material was mastered. This is the issue with edge-lit tvs that don't have FALD, the tv tries to enhance the black levels and boost the highlights but it can't do it evenly like a FALD would. I'm sure some of the more knowledgeable members on here can either explain this better or correct me on this if I'm wrong. So I just turn it off instead.

I was toying with the idea of buying a UHD player for some time now. I dont have a 4k TV and i watch movies on my 1080 projector. I needed to replace my ageing region free player which has a recent habit of reverting to region A only unless i do a full factor reset. I live in a region B area so i dont mind it getting stuck on A so long as i have something to play local releases.
I was not sure if i should bother going down the UHD path as i probably wont be buying a 4k TV let alone a 4k Projector anytime soon but this player popped up on a local buy and sell site at a decent price and i took the plunge.
I must say that it has given my blu rays a new lease of life that i was not expecting. I figured i might buy it to future proof myself a little but i was not expecting to notice much of a difference with 1080p content.
I am glad i bought it.

Thanks for all of your replies and feedback. I appreciate it. So I think something strange is happening with my player because now I can barely get any 4K discs to work! Started with Black Panther but after trying some other movies, I was then encountering the same issue. I tried Guardians 2, The Last Jedi, Wonder Woman, Ghostbusters and had the same issue. The only one I could get to work was Blade Runner 2049 of all things. I played around with all of the settings, and even did a factory reset and nothing seemed to work. I am out of the warranty range unfortunately, but I will contact Sony to see what they say!
I had a similar issue. Bought black panther 4K tried it wouldn’t work at all. I bought a different copy same issue. I thought it could’ve just been a coincidence. Then any disc I tried after that would only show in 1080 with intermittent 4K. I went to the place I bought it and after speaking to them. They said it was Definately the DVD player and suggested I bring it in so They could send it to Sony. They said it could cost a couple of hundred quid at least. Anyhoo the girl freinf said she would try getting black panther from a different store. Same happened. But every disc a played after that worked fine. The girlfriend took the DVD player to the store and a different person who was much more knowledgable than the last fellow said it was the firm ware. He updated it and dvd worked straight away.

A family member that I know subscribes to the unlimited Blu-ray rental program with Netflix, and they watch several Blu-rays every week on the Sony UBP-X800. So far no problems playing any type of optical discs on two different Sony UBP-X800 Blu-ray players, and they also play 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs that they have purchased.

Perhaps using a high quality USB flash stick for persistent storage well improved playback performance on some java based Blu-ray discs. Also if one has problems loading a certain disc try clearing the persistent storage in the player.

Panasonic makes good 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players also (and I have personally used Panasonic Blu-ray players), however no SACD and DVD-Audio support well be a deal breaker for some consumers.

OK after some playing with the new firmware. It feels loading discs goes faster now.

Now the best part: HDR -> SDR has been fixed. No longer a bright brownish/ bloomish image on the menus. Like this effect:

Also the subtitles are no longer affected by this. All clear.

Also the movie PQ benefits by this. Especially the white parts, like in faces. Now it scales HDR -> SDR properly.

When I turned the X800 on today it informed me that a new update is available, I downloaded the update successfully over my wireless connection, had no problems at all.

Not all apps. Go to "setup", then to "software update" !

Ok, I turned ACE off, and still see the flash lighting. It even shows up on something as simple as when the credits roll. The all black screen looks fine until the white text comes on, then the whole screen looks washed out. Is there another setting on the Sony tv (XBR-65X850D), or the Sony X800 Blu-Ray player?

I've always had issues updating via wireless / wired connections with the X800. Thankfully the USB option works without issue.
