£16 to watch it on Amazon, how about NO! I'd expect a bluray with it for that price.

Agreed. The girl was so stinkin' adorable. Kinda reminded me of the little girl from The Meg.

Just finished it. I enjoyed it .. slow in beginning but really picked up. The audio quality was pretty bad even compared to WW84 .. hopefully the UHD is better.

? Just want to be clear.

I don't mean to labor over the details of theses asinine plots, really. The fights were rugged and Jia was adorable, but, I can't help it LOL It's just the way I'm wired, I guess.
I'm not claiming any great understanding, and I only watched it once. But, here's my answer!

[Show spoiler]
Based on earlier dialogue from the test scene about Mechagodzilla only operating at "40%" without the hollow earth sample, I think that sample was probably irrelevant to the autonomy thing - I think it just was a much stronger power source so now he was more "souped up." Maybe the skull could have taken over at any point if it wanted to, but once it was actually capable of giving Godzilla a beatdown it seized the opportunity?

It might not necessarily be "THE TRUTH," but it was how it made sense to me, and I don't think there was anything to contradict that idea!

I really don't mind things not being explained as long as they make sense within the movie's context. In a movie like this, where there's so little explanation of how anything works, it's fine with me when things are silly/ridiculous. It's movies that labor over detailed explanations of how tech works where I start trying to pick apart details if they don't make sense. Here, it was so simplified and goofy that I don't think there's enough details there for them to be "plot-holed" by anal people. If everything needs to make sense and have the most technical explanations possible, go watch Primer. Not saying you're one of these people, I've just seen a lot of "wtf that couldn't happen in real life! WTF the center of the earth isn't a jungle! this movie sux!!!" Ironically, often from the same people that praise something equally silly like Justice League just cause it's so po-faced.

Hey now, let's not get into a Justice League conversation here LOL I've basically stopped discussing it in either thread in any meaningful detail after getting pretty ground down over it on the run up to release.

In any case, I like your outlook there. Analyze to the extent that the plot deserves, maybe? I'll have to try it sometime!

Why is it SO difficult to make a big blockbuster action movie that balances both spectacular action AND great character beats? And don’t tell me it can’t be done because it can, although most movies don’t end up pulling it off. The only ones that really come to mind are older movies like Independence Day and Armageddon, although more recently I thought The Meg did a pretty admirable job with both.

Sometimes I feel like movies like this should have two directors working in tandem, with one specializing in the action and the other on the characters. Adam Wingard gave us FANTASTIC monster fights, some of the best we’ve seen, but he absolutely crucified the characters in editing (the only strong point was Jia and her relationship with Kong). We had a fascinating character with Ren Serizawa who could have made a great layered villain but he was reduced to nothing but a lackey for the main villain. And poor Kyle Chandler, what a slap in the face to him.

In the case of a movie like this, I feel like we should have SOMEONE fighting for the character stuff. I know people will just say people don’t care about the humans and there’s lots of people who don’t, but what about those of us who do? I love big action set pieces as much as the next person but I also love great characters with development who I feel connected to. It’s not impossible to have both so why do those of us who want good characters ALWAYS have to suffer to please the ADHD crowd?

I love film because it makes me feel things and connect with characters I fall in love with. I should be able to have both but yet the studios always choose money over quality and it’s sad. GvK is getting a lot of praise for lots of reasons but they completely botched the human element in this movie and aside from Jia I think this has the worst human element out of all 4 movies in the Monsterverse. I’m honestly sick of constantly being let down by these movies but I guess I shouldn’t ever expect anything different.

I thought it was just us. Did I hear something in one of the Youtube reviews that I watched today which said there may have been an issue with the file on HBO Max and that there was a chance it could be fixed?

My apologies for not providing a direct source there, but, I'm fairly certain that I'm not fabricating having heard that this morning.

I think it was Black Nerd?

Maybe they were just hoping LOL

Yeah,
[Show spoiler]the hollow earth sample was about getting the correct power output algorithm for the suit to make better use of the current power source. Since they didn’t actually transport a sample to be placed into mechaGodzilla.

I think it really comes down to the producers.

Having said that, you just listed three movies that I think are really lacking in their writing, but I don't blame the writers. Writers write what they're asked to write, and it can be frustrating and thankless because no one seems to understand you're getting paid to do what you're told. So my guess is that's coming from very high up the signal chain.

All hail the Coen Brothers for writing and making their own work.

It was kinda weird seeing Godzilla grin, but Godzilla has done stranger things in the Toho movies.

They are probably giving a light outline or plot. Then character descriptions based around things like tough capable and graded. Tough capable and innocent.

The characters throughout all these movies are all templates.

They even added the plane falls off camera and flies into the distance trope.
