I want Matthews' brother on the other side of DeMarcus Ware for 8-10 years, can you imagine?

i'm sure i will never again see my two favorite college programs play for the national championship... and even though i wanted Oregon to win, it wasn't terrible to watch Auburn win. at least it was a close game, and that's the one thing i hoped for (no matter who won). it'll be interesting though to see how good Auburn is next year (with or without ) Newton...

Newton might not leave... I feel like he hurt his stock tonight (which I figured he'd do).

Newton just doesn't strike me as a good passer, a better passing QB would've had Auburn winning in a blow-out instead of a nailbiter. I see him being like Brad Smith in the NFL, basically a return man/wildcat QB.

i think even if he had a great game, he would still - MAYBE - be a late first round pick. and even then, i wouldn't take him until mid-second round. these types of quarterbacks just usually don't fare well, and if they do, once you "figure them out" they're not as dangerous as they once were and they have a hard time expanding their game (Vick, Vince Young, Culpepper...) and with Newton being "solid" tonight, and nothing more, i think he should stay.

but then again a team could pull a "he's a special player" (a la the foolish Broncos choosing tebow in the first round ) with Newton and draft him MUCH higher than he should be.

oregon coach fail no shotgunning on goal line to add another 3 yards to a run....thanks....no regular snap and a full back infront, or a superquick handoff to james?

Oregon lost because of

1) questionable play calling (screw the razzle-dazzle)
2) QB couldn't read simple defensive schemes
3) poor tackling
4) defensive backs were not aggressive enough

At the end of the day, the simple reads is what cost Oregon the game. Really great game to watch though. Fairly, for all his dirty play, looked like a man amongst boys. I don't care about the Freshman RB's stats, Fairly was the MVP

There is no chance Newton stays. I don't believe for a second that the pay-for-play story involving his dad is done, and there's going to plenty of reporters digging deeper. He will be a first round pick because there's so many teams desperate for quarterbacks, possibly top 10 if he does well at the combine, and his stock can't get much higher.

man, I really enjoyed that game.

We didn't see the offensive fireworks everyone was predicting but boy that was fun. A few observations...

1) Chip is ballsy. Fake FG option on PAT and then the fake punt to convert a 4th down. In the end, I think he was a little too fancy
2) Auburn's defense really stepped up. That goal line stand was gigantic
3) Nick Fairley is a monster. He's dirty but you cannot deny his ability to dominate the trenches
4) Short yardage situations, Newton was so key

In the end, Auburn's massive size and play at the line of scrimmage was too much. On the offensive side, Deyer had an excellent game and ran behind a line that just simple outsized and outplayed Oregon. On the defensive side, Oregon's line just couldn't get any type of push and the Ducks couldn't get anything going on the ground. This turned Thomas into a passer and that's just not the Ducks MO. If they cannot establish the run, the passing game is going to get hurt. Thomas just looked shaky in the pocket and couldn't make the correct reads on multiple plays.

The end of the game got really exciting and it's a real shame regarding the play were Deyer wasn't tackled and continuted to run. Always play until the whistle is blown...

Of course you could cut through all the excuses and chalk it up to the normal reason one team loses to another:

Auburn is the better football team.

Five straight national championships for the SEC by the way.

Sort of makes you sick that despite the admitted rule-breaking, the kid is still permitted to play, win the Heisman, and then lead his team to a National Championship victory.

As I've gotten older and become a parent, I have learned to care more about "the message" that is sent to people. The "message" that the NCAA sent re: Newton and the Ohio State players is not a good message, and I'll take the parade of horribles argument and run with it -- it's only going to get worse.

Last night's National Championship game was the most watched program in cable television history with 27.3 million viewers.

Weird, I saw that its ratings were down 10% from last year.

EDIT: Duh, I get it: it was the most watched program on Cable, but it had lower ratings than last year when it was on Fox. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/201...html?eref=sihp
