Very cool of you to offer that. I'm all set as thankfully through some miracle not only did my copy arrive on Tuesday with a slipcover, but the slipcover was intact!

But it's great to see somebody doing something nice in the forums just because.

You should get that obsession with Geoff D checked. I mean he's got that charming british purrsona, but I'm sure he's more into ladies and not american rednecks.

Wow! Since you obviously have never been in that situation, allow me to point out that is possible to steam up the windows of a car without having sweaty hands. Ask me how I know... (Hint: it helps if it's chilly outside. Like, say, in the hold of a ship.)

I redeemed my code, quickly flipped through some scenes on Apple TV, and I thought it looked great!

I’ll admit, I haven’t seen it before, and I probably have the least knowledge of film tech of anyone here, so take with a grain of salt ha.

Oh I get it..and got it.. several "vacations" for defending myself against our buddy...still I can't stand by with disc in hand while someone with no disc tells me what's wrong with it...

Titanic as well as lot of other movies lost a great deal of "reality" with HD and even more so with 4K. Special effects look can look very fake, especially with today's tv's. The best way to tame this is using a projector. This brings a more film like quality back to the disc and it's a much better viewing experience IMO. I watch a few minutes last night on my Vava 4k UST projector with ALR screen and it was quite fantastic compared to the few minutes of viewing on my OLED which looked more video gaming but still quite stunning.

I have been ruminating over this remaster for a few days now. I don’t think it looks bad, but like another posted above, it looks wrong.

The added sharpness looks great for textured details like fabric and metals. But what gets me the most is the sharpness on the faces. The previous release wasn’t nearly as intense and was fairly naturalistic. With the new transfer, sequences with Old Rose’s wrinkles, for example, are so harsh and ghastly that it reminds me of that 30 Rock bit with the HD Camera.

All in all, it doesn’t look terrible. Moments look amazing and I’m curious about trying it out on various displays. But, I don’t think it will become my preferred way of watching the film; at least right away.

Do not pay attention to anybody here (including me) or the internet platforms to make your pick. Just rent or buy the new 4K Blu-ray edition and do your own assessment.

I watched it last night in my home theater. In my opinion, it's the best rendition of the film Titanic in any release home media format until today.

Kind regards,

When watching last night, I paused at the point the bow dips underwater. I noticed the rigging on the left side is edited out from the middle to bottom of the frame throughout the shot. I probably would have missed it had I not paused at that particular time. Outside of that I didn't notice anything outside of the sharpness when it was in motion.

That's the point really, their iconoclasm is what made them who they are and it carries through in everything they do.

Besides which, the only person who keeps mentioning this and T2 in the same breath is YOU, I think I already put it to you that you're trying much too hard here and you just need to dial down the outrage a tad. It's okay for people to discuss these things and aside from Riddhi and starmike getting banned for having a quarrel about tangential bullshit I'd say this thread's been remarkably civil considering, say, how poisonous the LOTR thread got.

It's really quite simple: this is in no way a photochemically faithful representation of Titanic. In several respects it could never be anyway, even with the best of intentions, but what it does represent is Cameron's final say on the movie using all the modern technology available to him.
Whether we like it or not doesn't even matter, his artistic ideals have been attained and so it is 100% faithful to what the filmmaker wants.
I'm going to bring my coffee analogy over here, where film is coffee and digital revisionism is all the foo-foo stuff you can add to it, like whipped cream, sugar, and sprinkles. I wanna nail down that Jimbo = Starbucks. Iconic, disruptive, championed... (not the first, not the best, but very impacting) that brought so many to the idea that coffee is not just a commodity. However, everything they do overpowers straight, good coffee. Further, now they are at a level of "McDonaldization" that trades on their status rather than truly making something good. Yes, sometimes the bit of sugar and cream is nice in coffee... sometimes it's even necessary, but there is a line where, no matter how tasty it is, it's no longer coffee anymore. This is Cameron in a nutshell.

(random side note: I grew up near the Pike Place Starbucks location and saw what they did before their IPO and "frappuccinos" and such. They did once know how to make decent coffee, though nobody outside of that area ever got to see that. lol)

I was thinking that based on what people are saying here, and from the screenshots, I would probably enjoy viewing this on a projector more than on an OLED display. Most likely, that OLED would just be too sharp and clean for THIS version of the movie.
I like switching up my viewings between both, depending on my mood. If it's a movie I watch often (like, "The Thing"), or something that is stuck in the 80s that screams a theater-like presentation ("The Blob"), I very much enjoy the projector.
If I am desiring an amazingly pristine presentation, with a source that is still filmlike (most Sony 4ks, for example), I get giddy at the beauty of my OLED. But then next time I watch it, I'll go for the projector and still go "Dang. That looks good" but for entirely different reasons. That movie theater experience really comes to fruition.

Totally agree. But I do think this is the most extreme example of what happens when with a Director Approved™ transfer. In reality, given what we've seen from Michael Mann and Wong Kar-wai and others, I'm much happier when a third party, who's aims are true to the original source material, take over the restoration work. I don't mind directors changing things, but when their new version is the only version, that's what I get annoyed. In a perfect world, we'd have this over-sharpened version and then also one that looks closer to a faithful restoration, what we've come to expect, grain and softness and all.

Personally, I think I'm going to skip this. I love Cameron's work but I don't like Titanic enough to deal with the over-processed nature of the image. I just know it'd annoy me.
