No but there was time when English sub are useful, like when Benny Hill would be doing his cockney accet (I think it as that) Good lord I could not even understand one word of what he was saying

I used to live in England, and even I had a bit of a struggle at times with Kes.

Criterion's lack of subtitles is stupid and lazy. Or maybe I am the only person who thinks that deaf people should also be allowed to enjoy movies.

I had no trouble with Red Riding trilogy but Kes had me a few times.

Did I miss something, I thought my copy of Kes had english subs that were word for word? They needed to be turned on by remote, but worked fine.

Edit: Just checked dvdbeaver's site and it says optional subtitles are available and will help with translation on Kes.

Totally agree with the subtitling, for the little effort it takes to provide them on the disc, all releases (never mind Criterion) should come with them as standard.

It was just jokes with the accent comment - except the bit about all the Brits who sound like Hugh Grant

Yeah, it has the SDH (subtitled for deaf and hard of hearing) subs which are perfectly functional but also include non-dialogue cues like [dog barking] or [door closes].

It's an admittedly minor point but dedicated subs would have been a nice touch.

I can see how that would be missed on the mixed language titles. It seems that 95+% of their blu titles have some sort of English subs, even on the English speaking films. Seems pretty consistent to me.....

Shindo is indeed an excellent director. On the topic of Kuroneko, it is a treat for any fan of Japanese horror, although I must say I liked Onibaba a bit more.

I wouldn't call it consistent. If it's a foreign movie, then regular subtitles are offered. If it's an English spoken movie, then only subs for the hard of hearing. If it's mixed, then only for the bits that aren't in English. It wouldn't be too much to ask to have both regular English subs and for the hard of hearing included? It can't be a space issue.

Yep. ALL titles from all studios should have full English subs for the hard of hearing. Not just subs when it's convenient. I've bought several discs recently (Hannie Caulder, The Stunt Man, any of the Shout Factory discs) that have a ton of special features but no subs. Which is pretty unacceptable.

At the very least, closed captioning. But traditional subs would be a great option (to only have the dialogue).

Have you guys written to Criterion about this? Seems like something Criterion might change if a lot of people that need SDH subtitles made them aware of it.

It's probably more a money/time issue rather than space, and they don't think the extra money/time is warranted, or it could even just be an oversight on their part.

They've commented about it in the past, on FB I believe. They basically said they may look at adding SDH subs in the future. IIRC, this response was easily a year ago or more.

Hey, even I am wondering what's happened. I kinda miss CG's unique take on English grammar and his slavish devotion to all things Godard, Hopper and cinematic grunge. And I love to see him on the attack when it comes to Spielberg (even though I am a Spielberg defender). Can we get another Spielberg debate going?

But seriously, I'd better bring it back to Criterion... has anyone seen "That Hamilton Woman"? (I know it's not a bluray...). I picked it up cheap recently but haven't watched it yet. I read some time ago that the great critic Andrew Sarris has a soft spot in his heart for this movie and saw it over and over as a youngster. The presence of Vivien Leigh was the major factor in this...

Amusingly with Kes and it's subtitle track, I actually noticed a mistake (being English and familiar with the dialect). The subtitler has misinterpreted an obscure figure of speech and subtitled it as something else but very similarly sounding, though right now I can't recall what it was. I must remember to check!

I have had the DVD for some time now. I enjoy the film, and read that Winston Churchill saw the movie some incredible number of times. (a favorite of his) Leigh's skill and beauty was undeniable, but I still think her best performance was A Streetcar Named Desire.
