Is there any way to check store stock? I tried checking their site, and they have a couple of the CC titles I want for 35 (high for you guys, but remember, it's like 40+ here and then I have to pay 15% sales tax on top of that).

I guess I could wait for the sale to order some of these CCs. I just wanted to buy some on my trip. Guess I'll just be getting The Lion King and Criminal Minds Season 6 on DVD. Lame.

None that I know of. Selection also seems to vary by store. The one I used to go to didn't have any Criterions.

I'll order the two I wanted to pick up from Amazon. They're both about 28 bucks right now, and maybe Harakiri will drop a bit more by next Tuesday. I just did a price comparison, and it's about 12 bucks difference between Amazon US and Amazon Canada for the two titles. I'm too impatient to wait for the sale, and I have a bunch of other titles to get then too. I'll just spend a bit less in NH.

Now if only B&N will send me that bloody email confirming my 30 dollar credit. We were speaking to them almost 2 hours ago. I'd like to reorder the Leone set, as it is the cheapest from them.

Edit: Nevermind, I'll buy those two at B&N, because ordering them from Amazon is only about a dollar cheaper per title, because Amazon's shipping is high. It's still cheaper than the Canadian prices, even though it's higher than I anticipated.

Edit 2: I don't have to re-order the trilogy. My mother just called and told me my brother had picked them up in the mail today. I don't know if I'm getting a credit back or not, but if I don't, I'm not too concerned.

I think there were some spiders in the mailboxes. This link bears repeating: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-s...tops-mail.html

FYI, for those who want more foreign films that aren't French, Italian, Swedish or Japanes to watch, and have TCM, TCM's showing a couple from Yugoslavia (it was called that in 1968 and 1965 when the films were released) this Friday night/Saturday morning:

2:00 AM - Love Affair, or the Case of the Missing Switchboard Operator (1967)

3:15 AM - Man Is Not A Bird, A (1972) (TCM goofed, it should be 1965)

They're both directed by Dusan Makavejev: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Du%C5%A1an_Makavejev

These two are in the collection in an Eclipse box set: http://www.criterion.com/boxsets/668...evfree-radical
Bears repeating, as I derailed the thread somewhat with my retail woes.

Forgot to add that Makavejev also directed Sweet Movie, another CC title.

I blind bought Sweet Movie during one of the B&N sales (mainly because I like watching "Controversial" movies) and thought it was not very good..... kind of boring

I just watched The Phantom Carriage. Criterion hit this one way out of the ballpark. The picture is awesome, some scenes approach the best looking silent BD images I have seen. (2K transfer) My floor was shaking from the massive amounts of bass emitted from the KTL score. (PCM stereo 2.0) I love the haunting shadow that this track casts on Sjöström's images. (I have never heard the score by Matti Bye)

I hope to see more silent films on BD from Criterion. (I'm off to watch People on Sunday right now)

Every Criterion I've seen there was for full retail - $40. I have seen used titles, but their prices on those are as much, if not more, than Amazon's new copies.

Rich, I just saw this posted below. I wonder if Criterion has their hands on the same print, or hopefully are readying their own. Looks like the Quadrophenia blu-ray wish is coming true..... in Germany.... for now...

The C reminded me of the Criterion logo a little bit, and the new cover looks like something they'd probably do. Discuss.

I agree. I kinda wish I didn't own the book already (actually my second copy as I literally read my first copy to pieces as a kid) so I could get the awesome cover. Penguin has a whole line of new Criterion type covers, here are some I think look the most like a CC cover or I like in addition to the Charlie and the Chocolate factory one (picture heavy, hence the spoiler tag):

[Show spoiler]

Here's the link for all of them on B&N's site: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/s/peng...rt=R&view=grid

What do you all think of the Jean Vigo disc? I bought Solaris a couple of weeks ago but haven't opened it yet. The Solaris reviews don't seem all that enthusiastic while the Vigo ones are very enthusiastic. There is no difference in price, I can just do a direct swap. What do you all think?

I haven't managed to watch the Vigo set yet, but with that said: "Reviews be damned....... Solaris is FANTASTIC"

Pierrot Le Fou and The Killing arrived this morning - both 'blind buys', had the day off so gave Kubricks debut a spin and I have to say he nailed it, I would rate it as equal to Kiss me Deadly.

If you are into plot/story buy Solaris. If you are into filmaking and the history behind it, buy the Vigo set.

The Killing is a fabulous noir. (though I prefer KMD ever so slightly) The three noir titles that Criterion has released lately have been getting heavy rotation in my playlist. (SSoS, KMD, and TK)

The more I see films in the 5 by 3 ratio (1.66 to 1) the more I like this framing. (I believe this was the European flat widescreen ratio, compared to the US AR of 1.85 to 1) The only recent film I can think of that was shot in this ratio is Barton Fink. (it's a shame that it has died off)

Yeah, I'm a big fan of the 1.66:1 ratio. There's a distinct horizontal orientation, yet it allows for a noticeably taller frame than 1.85:1.
So many Criterion discs are in this ratio, which is great.
Also, when the hell is Barton Fink coming to blu-ray?
It's as if it wasn't an important film that won the Palme d'Or at Cannes...
