Quibi was a huge project that failed but there are many differences here.

Glance is already established in India with 23 million viewers.

Google is backing them.

Live streaming already has a proven audience elsewhere.

Glance will be a skin over the top of Google tv, in other words it will be the very first thing people see when they buy their new tv.

Glance plan to launch globally

People already spend hours per day interacting with social media, Glance on tv would be a blending of that plus live streams.

It may take away eyeballs from traditional, long form content, that would be a disaster because under 24 age group already engage far less with tv. The last thing we need are other age groups doing the same.

I don’t have the same faith in humanity that you do Vilya.
I think given the opportunity of interacting with influencers, reality tv stars and sports stars, I can see the masses spending a lot of time in the smart tv hub.

One only has to see how popular Love Island and The Only Way Is Essex in the U.K. and the equivalent in the U.S (I’m guessing The Kardasians and America’s Next Top Model)

Edit: 400 million users which I’m guessing is whole of Asia.
You said many of the same things about Quibi, particularly about it having big backers and big bucks behind it. It died a quick death just the same.

Also, as has been said to you many times before, a new thing does not automatically pose a threat to an old thing. Short bite sized youtube videos did not harm movies and TV shows and this new experiment won't either.

Lastly, 400 million users (of ANYTHING) in no way, shape, or form represents the "whole of Asia."

Yeah, sorry that was a typo. That should say ‘includes the whole of Asia’ rather than Just India.

This is what I believe. The protect themselves using these documents with good reasons. If someone thinks up a class action suit that is viable then they can cash in and retire. Apple goes to court from time to time and usually they are prepared.

The you shall not pursue class action is typically the very first part of any of these documents.

They know it's a bit deceptive to let a user "buy" something that they don't own. It works so well it's profitable.

I haven't had much trouble with my online movies so Apple and iTunes and Vudu are all good services but I don't pay them actual money. I redeem codes from disc purchases. If they end up missing or degraded .. such is life. Free things can be as flakey as they want to be in my opinion.

Agreed and I know full well what MA, Vudu, iTunes and Google says could completely change at anytime as in titles removed, altered, a charge could be imposed to continue viewing, etc. I may not like it but I have agreed they could do any of this. Just glad that I only had a few purchases made for my Sony FMP-X10.

Physical media doesn't require ongoing support to function but by its very nature the same can never be true with streaming.

Exactly.

Servers cost money to build, use, and maintain.

Even if you subscribe to a movie service and therefore continue to pay, it's not reasonable to expect the content you like in particular to remain on it forever.

Playstation store removing Studio Canal films from Austrian and German accounts due to licensing issues. No offers of refunds. I wouldn't be surprised if all non-Sony titles are eventually removed since the closure of the Sony store due to the inevitable licensing issues with other studios in the future.
Like many others here this is the exact reason I do not purchase digital movies. The digital codes are simply a bonus that come with my physical disc. I have 10+ movies digitally that I got by redeeming rewards through various studios, mainly Sony and Universal. So while I don't have a physical copy of those titles I also didn't spend any money on them so again, no great loss. For TRUE ownership physical is the only way to go.

Collecting digital films seems to be built on sand.

Disc always.

A word best avoided when possible.

I don't have many outright stream purchases, do have several DVD2HD via Vudu. One stream purchase was Cool World and it will finally make it to BD on 9/13/22.

I will continue to stream purchase IF the title offers a real improvement in A/V quality over the DVD counterpart and is not available on BD or UHD BD.

Thank you; I am trying to do more each day.

As for my computer rebuild project I will put that behind spoilers as it might be considered off topic.

[Show spoiler]All of the new parts have arrived except for two Noctua case fans (NF-A12x25 PWM 120mm). Picture here:

ComputerParts2022B.jpg

A fair amount of money in that picture.

The processor is the Intel i9 12900K.

The ram is G.Skill 64GB DDR5 5600 Mhz (32GB x 2). I can expand the RAM to 128 GB if needed.

There is a new Samsung 980 Pro 2TB NVME M.2 SSD intended to be the new "C" drive.

The new CPU cooler is the behemoth Noctua NH-D15

The new motherboard is the MSI Z690 Carbon Wifi (computer will be hard wired to the internet, tho).

The new video card is the EVGA FTW3 12GB 3080ti along with a support bracket as this card is heavy.

Several parts will be used from the old computer such as two conventional Samsung 870 EVO SSD drives (4TB and 2 TB). This will give me a total of 8 TB worth of storage space.

My power supply is a Corsair 1200 watt Platinum model.

Naturally, I will retain my LG BD burner, too.

I will be using my existing mid tower case: a Corsair Carbide 400R.

The operating system will be Windoze 10 Pro and I will also be adding Office 2021 Pro Plus.

I think that's pretty much it. I have budgeted a little bit extra in case I overlooked something, but I have already spent over $3200 on the new parts. I sure hope that any oversights are inexpensive ones.

A friend will be building it for me soon. I am not physically able to do much more than "supervise" him; I'm good at supervising people. I hope that I am happy with the end results.

[Show spoiler]I have 3 sources.I would prefer one gizmo to rule them all but the fact is I don't know of any one thing that does everything I like to do.

ATV4K

All things streaming, I use it for ATV+, Apple Music, iTunes, Fitness+, Disney+, Neighbor's Hulu with live TV account, Kanopy, YouTube, Netflix and Vudu. If only it supported better audio it could be my one and only gizmo.

Zidoo Z9X

My Media Server device. I have most of my content backed up on my local network. The Zidoo performs like a Kaliedscape system and adds the ability to do 3D and multi channel high res audio.

Panasonic UB9000

My disc player. With dual HDMI outputs I can get HDR10+ which my AVR doesn't support. Capable of playing most of my content directly. Also used when others show up with movies they want to see at my place. It's offline and used only for disc playback.

I play video games but not in my home theater.

I don't have any Vinyl. I can appreciate it but it's too delicate for me.
My main setup also uses primarily just three devices.

The Oppo 203 does most of the disc spinning, but I also have a featherweight region free modded Sony BDP-S6700 for my region B locked discs. I have a mod kit for my Oppo, but I used it on my Oppo 93 located in my office which is connected to my 3D TV.

For streaming, I use a Roku Ultra; a gift given to me from a very generous friend. It allows me to enjoy Atmos audio when streaming.

It is rare for me to power these up, but I also have a Pioneer DVL-909 laserdisc/ DVD player and a JVC Super VHS VCR HR-S5902U.

The only game console in my main setup is an old Nintendo Wii; my "fat" PS3 and my first generation Xbox 360 (with HD DVD sidecar drive) are in my office setup. These three consoles see almost no use now.

I have a turntable connected as well, but I stopped fooling with vinyl eons ago. Too fragile and too high maintenance for me.

I am toying with the idea of buying some SACDs; I have never tried any.

That's two posts today; I have made my quota.

Seems you have most items needed. Intent: gaming computer? If so, would not a PS5 and/or Xbox Series X been much cheaper?

UHD BD Drives. I removed my Pioneer BDR-211UBK UHD BD drive from my PC and placed in a Vantec NexStar DX (NST-530S3-BK) external case which was then connected to the Zappiti NAS. It did not work reliable so it was placed back in the PC. Had not paid much attention to the Pioneer specs and was surprised this thing needed 12VDC @ 2.2A and 5VDC @ 2.0A. Got another external case (Bytecc ME-535U3) but have not tried it yet.

Noctua: Pricey but great products, I have found their fans to be some of the quietest.

Speaking of turntables I don't use one myself but I bought a suitcase model for one of my kids the other day and she loves it.

https://www.amazon.com/Victrola-Bluetooth-Suitcase-Turntable-Speakers/dp/B00UMVW4VA/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1CRJFDVFC97KG&keywords=victrola+vo yage&qid=1657314651&sprefix=victrola+voyag%2Caps%2 C128&sr=8-1

(I don't like the sound of it's built in speakers but she does and that's what matters.)

She went to the Goodwill and found a Disney Fantasia LP in prime shape for $2. I'm convinced it's worth more but this store sells all LPs for $2 regardless. She's having fun collecting them.

Physical Media is where the fun is.

I love vinyl and invested in a custom U-Turn turntable:

https://uturnaudio.com/3392397/check...fc865be4d92fa1

Once I received it I switched the surface mat to a cork mat and it's been gravy ever since. Have had it for about 5 years now. I did invest in a relatively inexpensive external pre-amp and that has made all the difference. The bass management is phenomenal:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The preamp is also made in Austria, so it's a little brick of awesomeness.

Curious to hear your thought on it if you do. I have been thinking about getting into it too; the multichannel music in some of the movies I've watched blew my mind.

SACDs are cool for multichannel music. I have a few of the Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs and Audio Fidelity ones. Mainly these are "audiophile" remasters, but a couple of the Audio Fidelity ones offer multichannel. All of those ones I have are hybrids where it also has a "CD" layer that plays in a regular CD player.

Views on this guys? Noticed the company getting traction on websites like The Verge. They are launching in USA and globally eventually.

Sounds horrific. Talk of interactive, bite sized chunks of content which is my worst nightmare. Coming to smart tv home screens and talks with Google etc.

Sounds like they are becoming g more established and their value is over 2 billion now.
:yawh:

1) interactive TV has been tried over and over again for over 30 years but never gains any traction. When people play games they want something active when people watch TV they want something passive.

don't get me wrong, maybe a call in feature on a talk show might be kind of cool.

2) look it is simple
a) this is not BDlive so does not affect disk watching
b) this is mostly for live content but I guess it could be used for something like a multiple choice quiz show that is pre-recorded and you can answer and it tabulates your point
c) if this will have content you want to use just don't use the interactive part of it.

I really don't see why in any way shape or form it matters, it is not like it will force you to interact with content, I watch a show called Genial, it is a quiz show and years ago they added an app so you can play along, I never DL the app and never played along, why will it matter if I can add a cursor on screen and click on A, B or C to the TV to play along or if I do the same on the separate app?
