Just because someone is on this forum doesn't mean movies are the most important thing in the world to them. People can have multiple interests.

I personally care more about video games than movies. But I still think it's important to support both of them (and all other forms of art) exclusively on physical media so that they remain available long after official support has ended.

Thank you for asking because I'm glad to know myself.

Each episode is about 27GB
Each Season is about 270GB
And the whole thing is 2.04TB

Knowing it's this size, I think I'll back up my back up.

Years ago I was working though a Blu Ray set of Lost and one discs in maybe Season 3 was defective. It had taken me maybe 8 months to get to that episode as I wasn't watching Lost every day. But, Amazon replaced the set.

I have had more trouble with UHD discs than with Blu Rays or DVDs so something as precious as GoT or LotR type stuff I like to make extra sure I've got it and it's working.

With the price and rate of failure of hard drives it'll probably end up costing more to store than you spent on the collection.

Maybe. But I have real NAS drives in my inexpensive NAS units.

One thing is for sure a 2TB drive costs less than the GoT set. My 4TB Nas drives cost currently $80. Then there is the cost of running them and replacing them. It is NUTZO maybe but it makes me happy so there's that. I like not handling things this dear to me if I can keep them stored safely.

I keep the media and it is the true archive.

I don't use RAID on my NAS drives anymore because I once had a HD fail and during the 30 hours it took to rebuild the array any other problem could have taken the whole array out. I also don't want to lose space to the RAID when I have the data and the backup is only the backup.

Not in the long run. The Game of Thrones set will likely outlive you. The hard drive will need to be replaced every 5-10 years.

The GoT set will last a LOT longer if it's not handled routinely.

I hope it outlives me ... wait ... Actually, when I'm dead I won't care so maybe not. One of my kids (the same one who recently started collecting vinyl) wants to inherit the collection so for her sake I hope it outlasts me.

I wouldn't mind haunting my HT if GoT is playing but I fear for the music of the future because I can't stand most of it now.

By the way, Some time ago I had a momentary lapse of reason and wanted to go all in with streaming. I purchased things in iTunes I already owned on disc like LOST and Weeds and GoT.

GoT may look ok but Lost and Weeds on iTunes are not watchable. They look terrible.

Blu-ray discs don't degrade with use.

We could flip this and say you are depriving yourself of some really rich content by not playing multiplayer.

Something that was said about me when I didn’t even use subscription streaming. (I will never buy digital films)

I think that really rich content should remain available in the future. I won't watch or play it unless its in a format that doesn't require ongoing support to function.

It's hard to take that statement seriously when you've made exceptions for so much other digital content (including content that is available on physical media).

This is another one of those times I wish "digital" wasn't used to describe streaming content.

All my media is digital. But, this can't be fixed at this point. People seem to think digital means online. Or something... I don't really understand ... seems the definition is too fluid.

Unfortunately I don't know of another term that describes both streaming and downloads. They used to call it "digital distribution" but it got shortened to "digital".

How long have digital films been around? Trust me, I will NEVER buy them.

This forum requires ongoing support to function yet you still use it? Plus, it’s digital.

This forum is a tool to facilitate conversation. It is easily replaceable with a functionally identical alternative.

Art can't have a functionally identical alternative. I will not support any form of art that requires ongoing support to function.

I don't strongly object to people playing online multiplayer games (though I'm not personally interested in them).

I object to people supporting single-player games that could and should work without ongoing support but don't. Since you stopped buying single-player games on disc you are doing nothing to make sure that games remain available in the future after official support has ended.

I strongly believe that all artwork should be preserved by making copies and putting control over those copies in as many hands as possible.

I'm not against museums displaying works of art but there shouldn't be anything that can only be seen in a museum.

By that logic, you are not supporting as many games developers as I am because I’m going to be playing many more games than you via the catalogue. The more people play a game, the more the company benefits. There are many indies in the game catalogue that I wouldn’t necessarily buy but I can try them and download now.
So, you are only supporting a fraction of the game developers that I am now.

But the games you support are each completely controlled by one company. You aren't supporting the preservation or future availability of any games.

I'm not the least bit concerned that people are going to stop making games. I'm concerned that the games they make won't remain available.

Of course I am. Games catalogue benefits from increased exposure, potential DLC and great word of mouth for future titles by that label. Don’t forget, many people won’t wait months for games they are excited about.
If they discover a great game in the catalogue, they will seek out more games by that developer and also any planned sequels.

Even I plan to buy GTA 6 day one, also the next Fallout.

Also, one company doesn’t control the games. We have many cross platform games and if games are exclusive, they are either going to be Microsoft or Sony. So either way, they are controlled.
