Bit off topic but I was wondering if there is a list of american boutique labels that put out region B or region free movies? I figure with the holidays coming up there might be good deals to be had.

Heads-up, kiddos. Someone from Arrow just posted this over at the Criterion Forum:

Quote:
Stocks of The Taisho Trilogy are very low, it's not looking likely we'll re-issue this one, we're looking to make it available digitally only I am afraid. Our sales of standard editions of even major films following boxes just aren't selling unfortunately. This will be going for our Early Suzuki, Godard + Gorin, Sacha Guitry, Diamond Guys and Gangster VIP sets. We'll assess feedback and see if there is the right demand rather than just put them through the standard process so this isn't a guarantee that they will never come out but be warned it's unlikely as of writing.
Thought it was already pretty obvious these sets wouldn't get slimmed-down reissues, or reissues of separate films, but there's it from the horse's mouth. I suppose they will probably do the same for other niche sets as well (e.g. Yoshida, Rivette). Be interesting to see if they actually do separate reissues of the Kobayashi or Taviani titles too - probably the latter, but the former is a more of a defined trilogy.

I'd like a separate release of The Crazies.

I'd be amazed if we don't see that as a standalone release eventually, but it seems much more like this is the kind of set that could be broken up in future as everything stands alone well enough. But it might be that only the bigger films from sets like this see a standalone release.

I'm not surprised at the Japanese films in general not getting standalone releases, a lot of those are already bundled at such low per-film prices that if people aren't buying them in those sets why would they individually? The fact you can still get (the very good) Massacre Gun now, despite being an LE and regularly going for £6 in sales shows there's very limited markets for these things. That's why they're still just about the only things I buy on day one now, I don't want to see this little niche die and I'm happy to pay over the (eventual) sale prices to keep Arrow releasing them.

Ironically I could order the Suzuki set direct from Arrow for a full £16 cheaper than online retailers and have it sent 1st class in decent packaging and it will probably arrive before a prime order would.

Of course when I'm playing catch-up I will take account of recent offers on Arrow titles , especially when they are half of the price that I would normally pay for them. That's consumerism.

EG recently acquiring Burnt Offerings for £8.99 was too tempting (it came with booklet as well)

I also tried to buy the Taisho trilogy from Arrow web, but it didn't appear, maybe was later than your order.

No, but it's near-OOP according to the quote I posted above. Very surprising, but perhaps they had a lot of interest from abroad?

I got mine for £32.99 from HMV the other month (only copy they had in-store). I assumed like the Yoshida and Kobayashi sets, it wouldn't sell out for ages. Maybe with Suzuki's passing and the hype around these films in particular, the set is selling much faster than expected.

Does not appear to be on the Arrow site anymore and the price on Amazon UK jumping suggests we're pretty much OOP.

Mine is still sat sealed on my shelf, but I sure am glad it's there!

Glad I got mine when I did and thanks to your other announcement the other day I got in an order for the Early years set direct from Arrow too.

Could this be a repeat of the Dekalog panic? It disappeared from the Arrow site but only as Arrow themselves were low on stock and not that it was nearing OOP status. Seems unlikely that Taisho would go before some of the other LEs.

I suggested it could be just this, but the Arrow rep posted after me with the above quote, so I don't think it is the same situation. I suppose it sold very well due to the titles being rare and a lot of cinephiles all over the world would've snapped it up.

Take comfort in knowing you aren't the only one missing the point here... I am not advocating for them not to do business with major chains and sell as much product as possible, I actually want them to stay in business. Notice if you read my initial post, I also pointed out that the Fopp promotion is a great way to attract new potential customers.

I just question their tactics/strategy when it comes to sales and promotions and the poor argument that they can't give a decent discount via their own store. They can easily extend the promotion to their own store if they wanted to.

I hope to be proven wrong on Black friday though.

Also, since I could not find a seperate thread about it, watched "Island of Death" last weekend. Did not know what to expect and was pleasantly surprised by the absurdity and vile acts. Not to mention a great soundtrack. I also found the 1.33:1 format fitting! Fun movie.

How annoying. I was waiting for this one as I figured I had plenty of time. Boo!
