The receivers and power amplifiers also probably use more power then your tv does to drive all your speakers going off the heat it puts out.

They also are now trying to charge you for having solar on your roof. Reduce what they give you for excess generation to 2 cents per kph and reduce the grandfathering they previously agreed to by 5 years. It’s a mess in California because of the lack grid maintenance and wild fires. It’s at the point where you start seriously looking into going off the fire for power because of just how crazy the fees are.

If you're with Southern California Edison then you probably are getting hosed to a certain extend. I alluded to that in an earlier post. If your city has their own grid and municipal services, you're doing alright.

It amuses me to no end that he thinks that he knows more about what discs cost than those of us that actually buy them do. Some of us buy discs practically every single week and here comes alchav, who NEVER buys any, to tell us how much they cost.

He tells us that literally everything that he streams looks as good as it does on disc despite never having seen the disc presentation in order to make the comparison. I thought that in order to compare and contrast two things you needed to analyze both things. Who knew that I only had to look at one of them and just ASSume the results?

I do not smoke. I never have, but I think I will make it my mission to tell smokers everywhere what their cigarettes cost. They need to know. I'll even tell them how good they taste as a bonus.

Isn't that his purpose: comic relief? It makes more sense than someone actually believing all the nonsense he posts.

We are soon (over the next 2 years) to have Time Of Use Tariffs (TOU) that charge more for electricity at peak times. It’s currently just a flat rate. This is to encourage people to use off peak times much more.

Edit: I read this is being implemented in North America also, only a matter of time until it’s mandatory.
My home theater usage basically only takes place during off-peak hours since I don't have a completely dark room where I can watch movies while the sun is still out.

You read my mind!

Steedeel's power and alchav's bandwidth will be mine! Mine! Bah Ha Ha!

I've ordered a transcontinental ethernet cable because a wired connection is the only way to go.

My thinking is that this will cause a surge in consumers using their TVs way less and instead using tablets/laptops and smartphones because they can be charged at off peak times when energy is cheaper on these tariffs.

In other words, people are about to be charged more to settle in front of their tv/projector.

It seems renewables are going to mean giving up what we love unless we are happy to watch on small screens.

Pass me the rope.

Edit: I read this is being implemented in North America also, only a matter of time until it’s mandatory.

1) peak pricing has existed where I live for decades but it is a bit different (will discuss it in 2) there was always discussion of oven use, laundry and even the dishwasher but never in my memory of TV watching
you avoid doing at peak times what uses a lot of electricity and can be easily moved to none peak rates.

2) here a lot of places use electricity for heating as can be seen from this chart

winter peaks and summer peaks don't even come close to comparable.

HQ offers two domestic rates D which is a flat fee and DT where you are charged a bit less except when it is colder than -15C outside and they charge a lot more.

3) is renewable energy a reason for it? yes, is it the one to blame? no. the water flowing is free, the sun shining is free, the wind blowing is free. You can't pay more to get the wind to blow more to get more electricity as an example) What happens is that in peak usage the grid tends to depend more on consumable energy to bridge the gap and then the utility needs to spend more on coal or oil or Natural gaz.... consumable energy that can be ramped up at the cost of the consumable material and you can either average it out or decide poeple will pay more when it is more expensive to produce (with the benefit that it can get people to change habit and get them to say I will do the laundry when the electricity is cheaper and squash the peaks

Hell, they incentivize right now to go green and even if you can't, most qualify for energy saver discounts. I think the drought is more of a problem than energy consumption here in my neck of the woods.
it has nothing to do with crappy grip. It has to do with simple realities of electiricity production.

some electricity takes a lot of upfront cost (build an electric dam) some very little ( build a coal power plant in the city)

some can be ramped up/down fast others cannot

some electricity uses renewables (wind, solar, water....) which costs nothing in the same way that riding a bike costs nothing to get to your destination. Some use consumables (coal, Natural gaz, nuclear....) which costs something the same way a car needs gas and the more you drive the more gas you need.

If all the electric has the same source and the cost is the same then peak or not does not matter. But if the electricity has different sources the cost of producing it changes and the more expensive sources tend to be used only at peak times so the electricity also becomes more expensive to produce at those peaks.

it also does not make sense, are people in his universe sitting in the dark twiddling heir thumbs? what you work with are stuff that are easily movable. Let's do the laundry when electricity is cheaper, we had electric ovens so you avoid baking and stuff like that when the price is higher.... you move the easy to move stuff to off peak hours.

If you have to save money on your electricity bill, you won't find any appreciable savings by using your home theater less. Your home thermostat is where you can impact your power bill the most.

depends what we are talking about. when I used oil to heat my home the thermostat would not help with my electric bill (but it did help with oil bill)

Sometimes I think that your biggest hobby is just to worry about any and everything. Relax and enjoy what you have. If an old pensioner like me can afford to power his toys, a young working man like you should have no problems doing the same.

I had cataract surgery a year ago and had some complications with one eye which left me unable to see out of it the next day. Everything is fine now, but I would challenge the idea of "No big deal."

I do like westerns, and have Open Range (2003) on a decent DVD.

Waiting for BD (Region A or region-free), which could be a long (Disney) wait.

A friend of mine is having cataract surgery on both of his eyes beginning this week; they are doing one eye this week and the other one a week later.

He has really been through the wringer with eye surgeries this year. He had to have retinal reattachment surgery done in both eyes earlier this year and now this on top of it. Retinal reattachment was a hugely big deal, but in his case this upcoming cataracts surgery is far from routine.

I sure hope that everything goes well for him. We have been friends since the third grade; no one else has ever been able to put up with me for anywhere near that long.

Open Range is available on blu-ray in 7 other countries (U.K, Germany, France, Norway, Finland, Sweden, and Italy) and at very affordable prices. They are probably all Region B locked, so you need either a region free blu-ray player or the ability to rip the disc to your own server or computer.

This is the German one and it has English audio and subtitles:
