If you're with Southern California Edison then you probably are getting hosed to a certain extend. I alluded to that in an earlier post. If your city has their own grid and municipal services, you're doing alright. |

![]() He tells us that literally everything that he streams looks as good as it does on disc despite never having seen the disc presentation in order to make the comparison. I thought that in order to compare and contrast two things you needed to analyze both things. Who knew that I only had to look at one of them and just ASSume the results? ![]() I do not smoke. ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by Vilya; 08-11-2022 at 07:36 PM. |

1) peak pricing has existed where I live for decades but it is a bit different (will discuss it in 2) there was always discussion of oven use, laundry and even the dishwasher but never in my memory of TV watching you avoid doing at peak times what uses a lot of electricity and can be easily moved to none peak rates. 2) here a lot of places use electricity for heating as can be seen from this chart ![]() winter peaks and summer peaks don't even come close to comparable. HQ offers two domestic rates D which is a flat fee and DT where you are charged a bit less except when it is colder than -15C outside and they charge a lot more. 3) is renewable energy a reason for it? yes, is it the one to blame? no. the water flowing is free, the sun shining is free, the wind blowing is free. You can't pay more to get the wind to blow more to get more electricity as an example) What happens is that in peak usage the grid tends to depend more on consumable energy to bridge the gap and then the utility needs to spend more on coal or oil or Natural gaz.... consumable energy that can be ramped up at the cost of the consumable material and you can either average it out or decide poeple will pay more when it is more expensive to produce (with the benefit that it can get people to change habit and get them to say I will do the laundry when the electricity is cheaper and squash the peaks |

some electricity takes a lot of upfront cost (build an electric dam) some very little ( build a coal power plant in the city) some can be ramped up/down fast others cannot some electricity uses renewables (wind, solar, water....) which costs nothing in the same way that riding a bike costs nothing to get to your destination. Some use consumables (coal, Natural gaz, nuclear....) which costs something the same way a car needs gas and the more you drive the more gas you need. If all the electric has the same source and the cost is the same then peak or not does not matter. But if the electricity has different sources the cost of producing it changes and the more expensive sources tend to be used only at peak times so the electricity also becomes more expensive to produce at those peaks. |

I had cataract surgery a year ago and had some complications with one eye which left me unable to see out of it the next day. Everything is fine now, but I would challenge the idea of "No big deal."

He has really been through the wringer with eye surgeries this year. He had to have retinal reattachment surgery done in both eyes earlier this year and now this on top of it. Retinal reattachment was a hugely big deal, but in his case this upcoming cataracts surgery is far from routine. I sure hope that everything goes well for him. We have been friends since the third grade; no one else has ever been able to put up with me for anywhere near that long. ![]() Last edited by Vilya; 08-13-2022 at 08:46 PM. |
