I like Edgar Wright's films but we will never truly know if his film would have been great or not. I don't put stock in Whedon's ridiculous comment about it being the best script Marvel Studio's ever had either. Especially considering how that came up in a Whedon interview after he was already starting to let people know how butthurt he was at Marvel Studios.

It's not like Marvel Studios is known for their great scripts so it's not inconceivable that Edgar Wright really had penned the best one.

I never said it was inconceivable but unless his script were to leak I'm writing Whedon's comment off as just that, his opinion which is coming from a somewhat biased mind.

It'll be pretty easy to tell how much influence Edgar Wright has on Ant-man. There's a big difference between Wright and Reed. It's like comparing apples to significantly less delicious apples.

Or Fox heard the "it's too dark, it doesn't look fun!" complaints and are emphasizing the fun moments? Even Nolan's Batman movies had light or humorous moments... but the tone was overall dark and gritty.

In an age where Marvel is the top dog with their movies that are sold on fun and humor, it makes sense that Fox would cop that style - for the advertising.

If you took the "gotta get me one of those," "does it come in black?," and "nice coat," and compiled them into a TV spot with a Kanye West song for Batman Begins, it would make the film seem it's "not dark and gritty," but then you get into the theater and see that it is dark and gritty - it just has some moments of levity.

I haven't seen the movie so I won't pretend to know the exact tone, but I think that this is a distinct possibility. Who knows, could be fun and lighter than we've been made to believe; hope it is.

Even after a couple of trailers and TV spots, I don't think anybody is sure what tone this movie is supposed to have.

Neither does Trank; from what I've read he's referenced Cronenberg, Spielberg, Burton, and also a big superhero smackdown. It'll be all over the place.

Nothing about the trailers/previews so far really looks like it was influenced by Cronenberg except maybe the darker aesthetic (but that could just as easily be the indutry-wide "gotta make everything gritty" influence) and people undergoing transformations after a weird accident.

I still don't get why they decided on giving Dr. Domashev those silly looking lips on his mask. Or is that going to be his actual face which like the previous films started growing metal all over it?

When it came to Trank's comments about how he was influenced by Cronenberg, especially the remake of The Fly, he was saying that inspiration was mainly about how they react to getting these strange powers. Similar to seeing Goldblum's changes and accceptance over the course of The Fly movie. He wasn't talking about the overall look or aesthetic of the film.

That's actually a decent poster, even though they've recycled the same Kata Mara face again. Did she only shoot one publicity still? I can't believe they took a bunch of photos of her and only one came out good... (also why does she look like she's washing an invisible windshield)

Right, the stories in that sense are similar but I don't really see anything resembling The Fly or a Cronenberg influence at all in the trailers. But then again, they're trailers.
