The 'German' conversion job is basically where a film that wasn't released in 3D IS released in 3D, in Germany. This is often by an incredibly bad conversion process that doesn't allow for proper depth or volume, or is basically just the same frame seperated into left-eye and right-eye without any additional work being done, resulting in the image being pushed 'into' the screen with no discernable depth cues.

![]() At a medium distance from camera, 5 to 10 feet out, faces seemed to protrude somewhat unnaturally forward from the rest of the body, and eyes were over-recessed, but in general, closeup shots of persons and foreground items had fairly accurate 3D depth and roundness... I also noticed a good bit of ghosting at the beginning of the movie, but that seemed to mostly disappear a few minutes in... And you were correct in one thing - no popout at all, but that is not something I am overly-enamored about - popout is sometimes a good thing, like in animated movies, but not so much in live-action movies - there it just becomes a distraction. I was A/B switching between the native 3D and my projector's real-time 2D to 3D conversion to compare the effect... Basically, the native 3D on the disc was pretty much identical to the Epson's 2D to 3D conversion, except that the native 3D is slightly stronger with more depth separation, making the floating objects in wrong layers more noticable. SO, if you are familiar with viewing real-time 2D to 3D conversion on your TV or projector, then you'll be seeing basically the same effect in this German conversion, just with a bit stronger 3D level. Ah good to know, thanks for posting up a mini review! I guess I'll save it for my projector setup once it's complete.

Bummer Nomis1, I really liked Fright Night, as a film and for the 3d. That movie has been a potato-potahto feature of this forum though. 1/2 see ghosting and darkness issues, 1/2 do not. I would recommend you check out the BR3D version of My Bloody Valentine, a good horror flick that has lots of pop 3D moments fit accurately to timing - it is a darker film though so again lots of people have had some ghosting issues, I did with a particular scene but that was all. End of the day, a beautifully filmed heavy parallax 3d movie.
We broke out "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" the other night for the first time in quite a while (were up in the air on what to watch). I forgot how enjoyable that movie was. The 3d was pleasant as well, could have been a lilttle stronger but it was definitely a well done presentation. Don't forget that you own this movie and it's collecting dust ![]() |
