Latest rumor/word is Josh Gad is the "top choice" for The Thing.
[Show spoiler]
I'm really not one of those people who decides they're going to protest a film before they see so much as a trailer, but every time I hear something about this movie, I roll my eyes. Miles Teller? Josh Gad? Who's casting this Thing?

I have no interest in the young FF. The Ultimate comics aren't half as interesting as the seasoned explorers from the 616 comics. Fox thinks they need to cater to young people, you know, because The Avengers had a bunch of twenty year olds in the main roles, like RDJr, Evans, Hemsworth, Ruffalo, Jackson...

I don't want a CW version of the FF. We already got our "MTV Fantastic Four" with the first two movies.

Ben Grimm should be built like a linebacker and be the tough guy from a rough neighborhood who has a heart of gold. Gad is not only chunky, he's too "soft." If Miles Teller and Josh Gad are Reed and Ben, they're going to look like a pair of nerds from some teen comedy movie. It destroys the dynamic they've always had of Ben being the big, physical, football-player who you would never guess would be best friends with a guy like Reed, but they're like brothers.

I'm not getting my panties into a bunch. I'm not against this movie because it's not what I want. It's because Fox doesn't care about the FF and is only making this movie because comic books are hot, big money makers now and it's one of two comic book properties they have. They bought the rights from Marvel fair and square, so we can't blame them for wanting to cash in, but they could at least try to respect the source material and put a good adaptation on screen.

I want Marvel/Disney to regain the rights because they get their characters right. It's not because I want to see Thing vs. Hulk (but hell yes, I want to see that), or because I want to see Reed talk with Tony and Hank. It's because we'd finally get a "true" FF movie. Marvel might cast someone like Naomi Watts or Alice Eve as Sue, whereas Fox has the "eww, she's, like, old" mentality.

If the movie ends up being good, I'd eat my hat and see it. But I just can't get excited for this film and worry for it more and more with each rumor or piece of news.

Rant over.

Lol Josh Gad.

5'6 Game of Thrones actor Kit Harington is also "allegedly" being considered for Mr. Fantastic.

Josh Trank really does not know what he's doing. Give me a break. Josh Gad? You have got to be kidding me. His casting choices are like he's doing "eenie meenie miney moe". That is not how you cast for a movie.

Fantastic Four Reboot:

One day, we are confident that this property will turn out to be a major movie franchise.

...

Until it does, we just need to not lose the rights back to Marvel.

I'm getting that impression too Elandyll. The more I check in on news on this movie the more I see a train wreck or production purgatory. How many times has this been greenlit? I'm actually surprised Disney hasn't bought the properties back from Fox. At least with Amazing Spider-Man I am seeing an Ultimate Universe take on things.

After losing Daredevil, I think the only reason Fox fast-tracked the X-Men and Fantastic Four films was so they would not lose the rights to them so they're making some very bad casting choices.

The X-Men Days of Future Past storyarc is one of the most favorite X-Men storylines among comic fans but I haven't been impressed by how top-heavy Bryan Singer has made this film. In addition, I don't like how he's changed so much of the storyarc not to mention the hideous design of the Sentinels. They look too clean and it's like watching what appears to be a cross between an iMac and a Transformer.

What's Trank going to do next? Cast Jim Carey as Mr. Fantastic?

Until October to get it in front of cameras. After that, it's back to Marvel. Hoping this goes the way of DareDevil a few years ago...

Fast tracking X-Men? Not even close. That movie has had a normal, steady development since 'First Class'. The Fantastic Four is the only one that's at any risk of reverting back right now.

Gad denied the Thing rumor on Twitter. Good, but I still don't care about this movie right now. I love the Fantastic Four, so it's going to take a lot for Fox to win me over.

He denied it, but that doesn't mean anything. Paul Rudd denied being Ant-Man just days before the casting announcement. Also, there's this. Erik Davis, who broke the news, tweeted this out:

Quote:
Do we even know that this is @josh_trank on Twitter? He has like 10 tweets, all of them denying FANTASTIC FOUR rumors.
Quote:
And for the record, the Josh Gad stuff is true. He may not get the part, but he's being looked at.
Quote:
also, you can deny all your want, but fact is your boy is going around telling people about it. So deny that.
Davis has always been overly reliable with information. So, I take any denials with a grain of salt until the cast is finalized. And apparently Gad is telling people he HAS gone in to talk about the part. The seed is there. Whether he gets it is another thing entirely. But it's definitely been/being looked at.

Not only that but actors and actresses who are either cast or casting for a part often issue the standard denials. At any rate, I have never been impressed at Bryan Singer's work on the X-Men films ... he was the worst person to use for these films in the first place.

The writing on the first X-Men is so corny and campy that I can't even bear to watch it anymore, and I haven't, since it was first released to DVD.

Of all the movies in development this takes First Place in the REALLY SHOULD NOT BE MADE!! sweapstakes.

After how they blew the first attempts---why did they pick a guy with ONE movie under his belt to take over this storied franchise???

Was he simply cheap or did other veteran directors have no faith Fox was willing to do it right?

Please October get here fast.

Because Fox wants this to be Chronicle 2 but with iconic characters. I wanted a more classic take this time around, instead of more MTV/the CW junk. Trank is probably not only cheap, but as this would be his second film, he has no power and would be in no position to give Fox a hard time about anything.

I've been defending this film for a long time. Fantastic Four are brilliant and rich characters that could make a completely amazing franchise, and Trank has proved he has competence as a filmmaker. But the casting rumours for this film are really killing it for me. First of all, I need to clarify I have no problem with a race change for Johnny Storm, but I have a huge problem that a black Johnny Storm is the frontrunner, yet all the Sue Storm frontrunners are white. It doesn't really make any sense. Furthermore, none of the actors seem to be really appropriate for the roles anyway. Michael B Jordan, to me, seems like a relatively weak actor, and doesn't seem like a good fit for such a large role. Miles Teller does not really suit the traditional mature Mister Fantastic from the 616 universe, and Josh Gad seems like an awful choice for Ben Grimm.

I hope I was original correct to defend this film, and if not and this film is truly in danger of becoming worse than the first two, maybe we might get lucky and the rights will slip back into Marvel's clutches.

I'll defend Fox with whatever they have planned for the X-Men, because regardless of how many times they have dropped the ball with some of the films, they still seem to be able to pick up the pieces and find a way to make it work somehow with the better films in the franchise. They have the X-Men rights and they'll never lose those rights, so if it takes a bit of rethinking and retooling in order to get it on the right path, I'm willing to give them that chance -- BUT... The Fantastic Four is a property that they should not have, because it's obvious they don't know what to do with it or how to do it right, so they should just let the rights go back to Marvel and save themselves the money they would put towards producing another FF film and instead invest it in their more viable X-Men franchise.

Yep, I agree, first time director of big tentpole with little experience = no real control.

Apparently what they want.

Oddly though, if they want to retain the rights and NOT reboot it again---why not at least make the casting really solid.? Then if the movie is so-so, but the cast is praised, they could at least get a better director and move forward.

If the cast is as bad as the rumors indicate and the movie is average or less AGAIN---then it's reboot AGAIN or finally let it revert.

What's the point of all this mess
