My original point about "The Departed" was another poster said a film released in October wouldn't be as likely to be an awards contender. I was pointing out that "The Departed" opened that very weekend slot back in 2006, and was the big winner that year.
But, since we're on this other subject now, if it were up to me: Scorsese would have WON for: Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, The Last Temptation of Christ, GoodFellas, Casino, Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, Hugo, The Wolf of Wall Street, Silence, and The Irishman. Several of those times, he wasn't even nominated. (I'd also have nominated him for The Age of Innocence). But, being perhaps the world's proudest admitted Scorsese fanboy and acolyte, I am admittedly far too biased to really contribute much to the conversation, I suppose. Hell, I even think Boxcar Bertha is a lot of fun; New York, New York is severely underrated; and that films like After Hours and Bringing Out the Dead are unsung masterpieces. He simply has never made anything that I didn't like. |

Also, by the way, I agree with you about "Silence".
One of the most ignored truly great films of the past 20 years. An absolute masterpiece, and no one cared, because they were too caught up in "I hate religion". When, of course, it's not a religious film (as 'God's Not Dead', "Heaven is For Real' and that sort of thing), but rather is a film about religion, and religious people, in a period of history. And, my word, is it a stunner. Gorgeous film. |

It was either that, or they felt like they'd already had enough of the sunk costs and they just tried to cut their losses, figuring that it was never going to make its money back no matter what they did. Imagine it playing Venice first, maybe even winning it, and then going the slow rollout starting in about November instead of just getting dumped in late December. |
