Still, AFAIK this is the first and only release from Fox that has to do with an Anniversary. Everything else was either a launch title or tied into a sequel/reboot release.

True enough, I guess there just weren't too many anniversaries for their key franchises in the last couple of years. Aliens was 30 in 2016 but that was literally the start of UHD and Fox were never going to put out such a big title first up (same with Predator last year, looks like they'll save the UHD tie-ins for the new movie) although 2019 is the 40th anniversary of the original Alien so that's nailed on for a UHD next year, you read it here first!!

WB did release Fantastic Beasts though, so they were likely promotional.

Yep, funny that the last four Potter movies were released on UHD the exact same day as Fantastic Beasts' home video release. There's some sort of link there, damned if I can put my finger on it...

There was no re-release for Titanic either last year (Paramount USA, Fox worldwide) despite a theatrical re-release & 4K remastered HDR grade in Dolby Vision.

This year is the 50th Anniversary of the original Planet of the Apes. Haven't heard anything about that though.

Die Hard is the only one I care about, so this is fine by me.

My rankings:

Die Hard

Yeah, Titanic's another crown jewel in their respective catalogues but it was just too early in the UHD cycle for such a major title. I wonder who controls the overall rights as to mastering the home video versions? Universal controls Gladiator for example so they just supply the relevant materials to Par who've authored it locally on the US releases over the years, but if I had to guess I'd go with Paramount being the controlling party on Titanic.

Seeing as how reticent Par were towards UHD a year ago then I'm not surprised that they didn't make any overtures towards releasing such a big movie on 4K, although the success of Ghost in the Shell on 4K a year ago is what helped to turn things around since (see below) - and even if it is just a successsion of sequel/reboot cash-ins and anniversaries, that's better than nothing!! Grease in 4K with audio derived from the 6-track mix? Someone pinch me...

Paramount Home Media Distribution reports that Ghost in the Shell generated a higher percentage of first-week disc sales from 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc than any other theatrical release with a domestic gross of more than $5 million.

According to NPD VideoScan data, the ultra-high-definition version of the film accounted for 11.4% of its total first-week unit sales.

“This is an outstanding performance for 4K UHD and clearly demonstrates consumers’ desire to own high quality and visually stunning content to maximize the capabilities of their Ultra HD televisions,” said Steve Siskind, president of worldwide marketing, home media, for Paramount Pictures. “Based on consumer surveys we knew that [the film’s] spectacular visual effects were a major purchase driver and these impressive 4K UHD sales bear that out.

“Feedback from our retail partners, coupled with strong sales like this, underscore the positive outlook for 4K UHD and we are responding by ramping up the number of catalog titles planned for release on the format.

That last little bit could be tremendously good news. Anyone interested in WRATH OF KHAN in UHD-BD?

We got a 50th anniversary Blu-ray as I bought it at Best Buy a few weeks ago for $5.

If only the Planet of the Apes movies had been released on 4k in 2018 it might have been easier as a tie-in.

I loves me some translated titles. Number 2 somehow became '58 Minutes To Live!'. Though I suppose 'Die Hard 2: Die Harder' really was just a giant "F*** You" to every foreign market needing to translate the title Barely stands up in English.

Yeah, you gotta love thems foreigns titles. The French one for Home Alone becomes "Mama, I Missed The Plane!" or something to that effect.

DH2 was actually based on a book called '58 Minutes' though so I can see where that came from for the French title, even if it has no meaning in the film itself. The Spanish had a similar idea with Die Hard, it was called "The Crystal Jungle" even though that makes no sense when carried on over into the sequels, natch.

Technically it's just Die Hard 2. There's no "Die Harder" in the main title. Just like Edge of Tomorrow isn't "Live Die Repeat" (where the hell's the 4K disc Warner???)

I love to play "Let's mock foreign titles"!

One of my all-time favorites is this one, the Spanish title for Dr. Strangelove:

¿Teléfono rojo? Volamos hacia Moscú

(yes, with question marks!), that literally means:

Red Telephone? We're Flying to Moscow

As for Die Hard, in Latin America it was called "Duro de matar", if you translate that to the english language, that literally means:

Yeah, me too. Classes it up right nice don'tcha think. Like a modern day Casablanca. Complete with classy dialogue -

"This time John Wayne does not walk off into the sunset with Grace Kelly"

"That was Gary Cooper, a**hole"
