I totally got the Brazil homage and it’s just part of what made it so enjoyable. It feels like it all might turn out to be a bit more Twelve Monkeys overall though. That wouldn’t be a bad thing in my book either.

For some people, it’s like postmodernism never happened. Or they wish it didn’t. Oh well.

Maybe our expectations for these super hero movies and shows shouldn't be "academy award winning performances". That's all I'm saying.

Heath won in a year that had a weak class, and the rumors of the win were happening within a week of his death.

I've said my peace about Joker, it's an excellent performance, but take out the shoehorned

subplot...it could have been called anything else and not be related to a comic book at all.

That's all I meant. With my examples I used before, I'm not going to take away points from F9 because Vin Diesel isn't giving it an Award Winning Performance...so why would I do it for super hero movies.

The screenplay is a bit off, I found myself wondering if should be laughing at some of the quips, and the some of the jokes didn't land well. Hiddleston is a charismatic presence but I don't think they've given the secondary characters enough yet.

I agree with post, I don't mind the references to influences but I feel the MCU is kinda too filed down that even some talented directors flourishes ultimately get bogged down by the machine.

I find myself still taking a directors original works (e.g. Fruitvale Station > Black Panther) over their go at Marvel Property. The only one being Logan which I feel stands on it's own as a piece of cinema.

I tend to agree, there are a couple exceptions for me. I wasn't a fan of early Gunn, and think GotG is his peak (so far). I'd say Community as well for the Russo's, but that's another "cog in the machine" example

To further clarify, I wasn't knocking the Brazil flourishes, but they were undeniable, IMO. Others mentioned the Umbrella Academy in terms of production design and lighting, but I haven't seen that series, so can't comment on that.

I thought this was very fascinating.

Mind you I skipped Falcon series because I don't find Mackie and Stan charismatic. But Olsen and Hiddleston are of course both awards caliber actors so I can watch them no problem.

This was way talkier than I imagined. It is almost like a theater piece with that extended Wilson-Hiddleston chat. That was the only point where it was TV-ish. Otherwise it was definitely cinematic in the production design and cinematography. Felt like it had a good budget and scope.

Where is at all headed though? Interesting premise and setup I must say.

I think after 45 mins of screentime, WandaVision had done a better job of setting up a mystery. This one did not, but I will watch it because the world building so far has been very effective. I am curious to see what it means.

It's fine, I have no idea what people are referencing with Brazil, so I don't comment on that one lol

Some of these projects are clearly trying to say that they are different in some way than what came before.

Even if I had been interested in watching Falcon and Winter Soldier after Wandavision, I wouldn't have been in the thread complaining about wanting more from the MCU in that project.

It seemed from the start that Falcon and Winter Soldier was meant to be more like typical MCU stuff and wasn't trying to say that it was different.

With projects like Wandavision and Loki, it seems like there might be something there, but it is held back by having to stay within the boundaries of the MCU.

Also, after Endgame, it feels like they should be more open to experimenting with the formula.

And that includes having movies or tv shows that allow the great actors in the MCU to really show the depth of their talent.

Other things like the multiverse stuff also interests me because of the potential to do something different, but after the fake outs in Spider-Man: Far from Home and Wandavision, it just seems like they are more likely to play things more safe rather than go a different or more interesting route.

I'd say it has more of a Douglas Adams' feel. Stuff like the paperwork and grabbing a ticket to wait in line doesn't feel a million miles away from Hitchhikers' Guide To The Galaxy or indeed 70s Doctor Who.

Just remembered this thread existed, read through the last 10 pages and... well.

I've really liked both of the other MCU shows, they've had issues but not any more than the movies since they're hardly perfect, and I feel like the pandemic didn't help at all so it'll be interesting to see if Loki was affected or not. But I haven't had any major problems and enjoyed them a lot, and I can't see Loki not also being good as well. I've already watched the first episode three times, it's been good to try to get a handle on the time travel and the lore they've introduced. Definitely feeling like the TVA are not to be trusted both due to the power they wield and the propaganda they're pushing, so I'm not going to take their little video at face value quite yet.

Just like with the other shows I'm loving the focus on a side character who didn't get as much development as I would've liked, and just this first episode has really delivered on digging into Loki more. It's good that he's been isolated from his family and really anyone who knows him since it's forcing him to handle a totally foreign situation and we can see how he deals with that going forward. I particularly like Mobius as a foil since Loki has no emotional nor physical power over him, and Loki enjoys poking and manipulating people, but Mobius just won't play his game. The exchange about the TVA being clowns and Mobius being totally unbothered by his attempt to belittle him is exactly the kind of thing that will drive Loki mad since he's always after a reaction.

My favourite scene was probably the one with him watching the main Loki's highlights, because with no one else there we got to see his true emotions instead of the façade he normally puts up when people try to get through to him. His biggest hang-up has always been his family, so him seeing how they really feel about him was great, as was him watching his own death by Thanos' hand. I've stayed away from all trailers and promos after the first one released so I'm excited to see where he goes from now on. Only a couple more days until the next episode.

It's not called "the Golden Age of Hollywood" because of quality, it's because of the astounding number of films produced, the whole "dream factory" thing, many of which have passed out of memory. It wasn't uncommon for a feature film, a newsreel, a short subject, etc. to only play for a few days before being swapped out for another program. There was no television, cinemas needed fresh content at a steady pace, and Hollywood cranked 'em out. It was the exception, not the rule, for a feature to earn enough popularity to play for weeks.
