Pretty much. Sherlock Holmes has a very desaturated look so it'll naturally keep mostly to Rec709, though if you look at shot 13 the glass window has some color to it so it's not entirely limited to it.

With regards to Collateral it has a lot of clear/hard edges around the 709 boundary, which might mean the Thomson Viper used at the time wasn't capable of capturing in anything else.

Ok. Looking at the HDR analysis of Collateral 4K BD, I see nearly no difference compared to the BD either. So the remaining main improvement would be from 4K then, however it's not native 4K, but a 2K upscale.

Leaves us with the potential improvement from higher efficiency encoder (H.265/HEVC), and bigger storage size (66GB). But I wonder how much that brings.

I kind of like this movie so I was hoping for more improvement pushing me to upgrade.

IIRC they baked-in the colour at 709, yes. It was such a new camera that when they shot in 'raw' (or basically the camera's nearest equivalent to it) they didn't have any means of applying a LUT on-set to correct for it, so when they looked at their monitors all they saw was the typical washed out murkiness that untouched 'raw' is comprised of. They changed to shooting in 709 to provide a transform that was more readily indicative of what they were actually seeing, but it means that there'll be no WCG on offer. (See also: Attack of the Clones, it was shot on a Sony rather than the Viper but a similar thing happened, in that case ILM tried to load a custom space into those cameras but in the end they just went with 709.)

Figured it would be something like that. It's a shame but who knows how much more it could actually deliver in some kind of native/log mode, maybe some of the other Mann/Fincher features will tell.

Default List of UHDs mastered using the BT.2020 color space

The vast majority of Ultra HD Blu-ray discs were mastered using the DCI-P3 color space. However, a few are mastered using the ITU-R Recommendation BT.2020 color space which is the native color space of Ultra HD Blu-ray. The only disc I have inserted which was mastered using the BT.2020 color space is this one:

I would like members of this forum to grow this list of Ultra HD Blu-ray discs mastered using the BT.2020 color space. To identify which color space a disc has been mastered in, you will need one of the following Ultra HD Blu-ray player models:
  • Panasonic DP-UB820
  • Panasonic DP-UB9000
  • Pioneer (Elite) UDP-LX500
  • Pioneer UDP-LX800
During playback of an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc, bring up the disc's HDR information. On the Panasonic models, press the "PLAYBACK INFO" button on the remote twice. On the Pioneer models, press and hold the "DISPLAY" button on the remote until an information sidebar appears, then scroll down to "HDR Information." Then, go to the mastering display information. Discs mastered using the DCI-P3 color space will display the following specifications:

Primary (Red)/Chromaticity (Red): X = 0.6800, Y = 0.3200
Primary (Green)/Chromaticity (Green): X = 0.2650, Y = 0.6900
Primary (Blue)/Chromaticity (Blue): X = 0.1500, Y = 0.0600
White Point/Chromaticity (White): X = 0.3127, Y = 0.3290

If a disc was mastered using the BT.2020 color space, it will display these specifications:

Primary (Red)/Chromaticity (Red): X = 0.7080, Y = 0.2920
Primary (Green)/Chromaticity (Green): X = 0.1700, Y = 0.7970
Primary (Blue)/Chromaticity (Blue): X = 0.1310, Y = 0.0460
White Point/Chromaticity (White): X = 0.3127, Y = 0.3290

They're all mastered using BT2020. Some of them just don't go beyond P3 based on the way they were shot/graded.

I've seen plenty of UHD blu-rays that go beyond P3 and into BT2020. Lego Batman, Planet Earth II, John Wick 2 and 3, Into the Spider-verse, and even ones like Home Alone and Rambo: Last Blood. Just to name a few.

On DCI-P3 mastered discs, which make up the vast majority of Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, the BT.2020 color space simply acts as a container for the DCI-P3 video. This thread is intended to be a database listing discs which contain real BT.2020 video and display the latter specifications.

Is there any way to check this on Sony 4K UHD Blu-ray players? Or only the ones listed in the OP?

Yes. And I think the idea with this thread is to list which movies actually contain colors outside of DCI-P3, i.e. colors that are only present in Rec.2020 and not DCI-P3.

Just because something is in the Rec 2020 realm doesn't mean it will slag your eyes!

EDIT: My comment is regarding a thread about BT.2020 color space, that got merged into Heatmaps thread.
Added my strikeout to first sentence now that we're in the Heatmaps thread.

I’m not sure if you’re still doing these but if you are, I’d love to see M:I Fallout. That’s a good looking disc.

Sony players cannot display this information. Only the listed Panasonic and Pioneer models can.

Which is a shame. This was one of the most useful threads within these forums. That's too bad that he didn't share his scripts. With those something like capsaholic 2.0 could have been set up...

Please come back Pyoko. The community needs you.

IIRC he's a post-production professional, he's literally got better things to do than jaw-jaw on here (though I hope he's okay).
