Yeah, that is the power supply.

Quote:
i've never opened the PS3 as i'm kinda scared that it may void sony even working on it at all. i'm an IT guy so i know a lot about computer interiors. i'm not too worried about ruining anything. but i'm scared that if it's not the powersupply or if it doesn't fix it, i will not be able to send it in cause i took off the warranty sticker.
Other people have opened up their PS3s before and when they still couldn't fix it, they sent it to Sony. And Sony repaired it. Just look at YouTube videos of testimonials.

Quote:
let me know if that power supply includes both phases you were talking about. thanks
That one power supply includes BOTH phases. ALL PS3 power supply does this. It's just like a PC power supply - it converts AC to DC. It's the additional board and circuitry, which make the BT/touch button turn on, that differs it.

The immediate problem is there is no Red Light, which means that the initial 12volt power is not getting through to the second board and BT circuitry. Just like YLOD, it could be ANYTHING from fried second board, loose power cable to the second board, or bad power supply. The best you could do is hope that your attempt will fix it.

If you're iffy about DIYing the fix, then don't do it. Get Sony to fix it for you. Whichever you may go with the decision, you have to choose it.

Default Green/Yellow screen please help

I downloaded the latest update yesterday played Little Big Planet then put in a movie (blu ray) and watched most of it and then turned it off. turned it back on this morning and then i had this green screen and it flickers between solid green and pastel green... and i have sound but no picture, I had a Mitsubishi 65" Projection tv... no HDMI so i use the hdmi - to - DVI adapter... it has worked fine up untill now. thought maybe it was the cable so i went and bought a new cable and it is still doing the same thing. so i did a system wipe , and like a dumb ass i forgot to do a backup and lost all my saved games but thats my fault, i just want the HD picture back... i have done some research and alot of people had this issue in 2007 after a big update but nothing recent has anyone else had this issue. hope this is the correct section for this, BTW its a newer 80 gig only 4 5months old, i have the extended warranty so i can swap it out i just hope its not my TV.... PLEASE HELP

*Update - did a complete reformat everything to factory settings and it is now a yellow screen... so i dont know what to do any suggestions?

You said you have sound but no picture, right? (no picture means no XMB, and not XMB is yellow) Since you already changed the cable, then there's two more options to explore.

1) Faulty HDMI (PS3) or DVI (HDTV) input. If you can bring your PS3 to a store and hook it up to a different HDTV, that would be helpful to determine which unit is creating the problem.

2) If it's the HDTV, then you must call Mitsu for a fix. If it's the PS3, you can ATTEMPT a reflow yourself (the RSX may not be connected to the mobo) or you can call SCE.

DON'T DO 2 UNTIL YOU'VE DONE 1.

OK update 2....
I have a HD computer monitor that i forgot it would take a DVI input, i plugged the cable back into the ps3 and ran it to the monitor, turned it on and now all i get is a blue flickering screen with light blue static.... so i am thinking that it is the PS3 when i plug the Composite cable into the TV i can get a semi- HD (480i) but no 1080 which is the monolink connection on my TV. the PS3 is covered under the factory warranty and i bought a extended warranty from game crazy so they will just swap it out for me and give me another one... think i should just do that?

Hey Mike,
My father-in-law was having issues with his PS3 not reading disks of any types (blu-ray, DVD, CD, SACD). I pointed him to your youtube fixes and he ordered up a laser. Fixed it no problem yesterday. Put another chalk mark up for a successful laser replacement

Thanks again!

Default Backing up your Hard Drive

Funny thing that I learned. You actually need the split USB cable that comes with the external hard drive in order to use the backup feature on an external hard drive.

Yeah, it took me a month to figure this out.

In my defense a normal USB cable works on normal data transfers such as coping files, but not full backups/restores.

I hope this helps others that are also mentally challenged such as myself.

If the PS3 is still covered under warranty, do that. Too bad you didn't back up your game data. Lesson learned.

I suppose you're talking about 2.5" external HDDs. For 3.5" external HDDs which need its own 12v power supply, you just need a regular USB cable.

I followed your directions, and replaced the laser in my PS3 and everything worked perfectly for a few days (probably about 3 hours of play time). Now when i put a disc in it doesnt even spin the disc. Before when it went bad it would spin, it just wouldn't read. So I put my old laser back in and it spun the disc once, and then wouldn't spin it anymore after that. I reinstalled the new laser, and it is still not spinning the disc. Any suggestions??

Thanks

Well considering that it was working after you replaced the laser, it doesn't sound like you did anything wrong in the replacement process.

Sounds like you got a bad laser.

Indeed. At least now I know if I want to make a seriously different looking PS3, I can do it. Like a hidden long, flat PS3 with a protruding drive, USB slots and card reader.

adamh, seems like your HDMI port is loose. If you're brave enough to open the PS3, see if there's any burnt areas around the HDMI port. It'll have carbon residue if it's burnt; use an isopropyl alcohol swab to swipe the area for confirmation.

tqmilymi, yours is a bit more extensive. Could be an RSX problem or video out problem since it did not YLOD. A bit more mysterious.

I sent my PS3 to Sony for repairs and they said they couldn't fix it and are sending a replacement. Not sure if it's a new model or refurb, but I should receive it tomorrow. Thankfully, my credit card (Amazon.com through Chase) covered the repairs via the extended warranty.

3rd laser went out on me. I started a thread about someone should file a class action about this and it seems to be deleted. I would myself but the fact I've popped open my PS3 would make that moot real fast.

1st laser fail.. under a year Sony fixed it

2nd laser fail.. not under a year, I fixed it. Worked for months afterword's. 60 bucks

3rd laser fail.. This isn't funny at all anymore. I'd have to spend half the price of a PS3 just to keep it working.... Not cool Sony! 60 + 60

Didn't you stop to think maybe what you were replacing with wasn't up to standard or another faulty component was causing the laser diodes to break?

I think that you should bite the bullet and have Sony fix your PS3 and try to get an extended warranty from them.

I know that it sucks, but it sounds like there is something else wrong with your PS3 than just the laser.

Shouldn't Sony have found and fixed that when I sent it to them the first time? Now it's pay Sony $150 to fix it or pay another $70 or so to buy a laser from ebay. When you pay near $500 for something you shouldn't have to keep paying to keep it working.

And I'm not even sure if they would fix it. I bought it with their one year warranty. Laser fails. I send it to them, they replace laser. The laser THEY replaced fails so I follow Mikes guide and DIY fix. THAT LASER SONY REPLACED FAILED!

I'd bet now that the seal is cracked they won't even fix it.
