The Jean-Pierre Mellville films are really good ... Army of Darkness, Le Samourai, Le Cercle Rouge are all highly enjoyable films. They aren't mainstream but they should be... John Woo wanted to remake Le Cerlce Rouge for years and I think it finally got abandoned... I don't think a remake is worthwhile on Rouge.. it is almost perfect and the atmosphere of the film and all of J-P Mellville's films are perfect... oh and Bob le Flambour (Bob the Gambler) is also great.

I love Mellville's films. I would buy Le Cercle Rouge on Blu in a heartbeat.

I love your avatar... have there been any Paramount films released on BLU ray that feature that same style logo?

Anyone get The 400 Blows this week from Criterion? I have it on order from Amazon and was hoping to get some reviews on the PQ...

Anyone?

We do seem to be following the same theme for avatars. I don't know if that logo makes an appearance in the collection. The only one I can think of off the top of my head that might be is Days of Heaven. That seems to be about the right era.

Melville's great. One of the great French film noir masters. Le Samourai, and Bob Le Flambeur are my favorites.

RAN will be released on Blu-ray in Japan on 5/28/09, which is probably why Criterion is able to release their version. THE SEVEN SAMURAI doesn't have a release date yet in Japan. I doubt a U.S. release would be possible until that happens (due to fear of people importing from the U.S., since the U.S. and Japan are in the same region for Blu-ray).

Actually, it appears that Ran has just been "cancelled indefinitely due to rights issues".

(Edit: per "Mulvaney", Ran thread at criterionforum.org)

Where did you get his info from? Did criterion send out any news on it or e-mail?

It would seem odd they would have a rights issue on the title because it is more than likely owned by the same company as all the other releases Criterion has issued on DVD for his films. Otherwise I would say the DVD will go out of print along with other films by the director.

Unless it is an isolated incident... would seem odd, I would guess Criterion was far along in the release process on the BD - I wonder if the discs were pressed yet etc?

They still are able to sale the standard DVD version.

A lot of people will be saddened.

Well now that sucks. I see it is no longer listed on Criterion's Blu-ray page...

They already had a licensing issue with a couple of the extras. I guess they ended up having to scrap the whole release.

Default Is anybody excited to see Revanche?

Is anybody excited to see Janus/Criterion's newest acquisition (a rare US first-run foreign release),Revanche? From looking at the trailer, it looks very interesting...especially as it will be released by Criterion on DVD/Blu-ray at some point...I'm so intrigued by it that I just bought the Austrian DVD from a seller on eBay. Supposedly it has English subs, but I've had trouble finding shipping out of Austria. Here's hoping it works!

it is a bit odd that amazon.com still has the pre-order up which doesn't mean much but usually they are notified quickly with criterion issues... remember when the first few titles were due out and the date was pushed back it showed on amazon before almost any where... maybe the release isn't dead yet or they would have pulled pre-orders sooner... after all it has been missing from criterions site for a couple days or more right?

They are not mainstream in America. Just about everywhere else, from Russia to Portugal to, yes, Hong Kong, they are about as mainstream as they could be In fact, Melville's films were amongst a selected few to spur official remakes in Eastern European countries (Romania, Bulgaria, etc) during the Cold War, and be shown on State TV without being touched by the censors.

idk if this has been posted on here yet but the Criterion Benjamin Button blu case will be identical to The Third Man's: cardboard. again, will NOT be a standard bluray case.
