Even though this probably stems from a gag, it's a good discussion. Would Amazon do this in Canada?

On the one hand Amazon is trying to push through big fee hikes lately, starting with the introduction of prime $79 in Canada, now an increase in prime pricing for USA.

But on the other hand, in the Canadian market, Amazon has to play ball with its two biggest competitors doing $0 and $20 free shipping thresholds. Despite having few players, Canadian retail is still relentlessly aggressively competitive among these players, so would Amazon mess with this kind of indirect revenue bump that works against market share?

But on the next hand, some companies are cheerfully exploiting the current 10% currency exchange difference with price hikes, sometimes way out of proportion. Such companies would jump at the chance to use currency as a cover story for making whatever kind of changes they like.

I could make a case for them doing it tomorrow, or a case for them never doing it. Trying to guess what they will do, I'd give the slight edge to jacking it up based on how they handled prime in Canada. They launched it at full price but with few of the benefits of the regular US prime. They appeared to have no shame about this, and there's credible reports they monkeyed with their fulfillment procedures to artificially make Prime look better than super saver shipping. So on the theory that past behavior predicts future, I guess I'd go with 60:40 that Amazon tries to slide in a hike like this, but I also wouldn't be surprised if they don't touch it since it currently differentiates them as worst in their peer group.

For Stanley Kubrick fans Barry Lyndon is now listed as $9.99, not a prank.

Are people really forgetting it was $35 for "free" shipping at .ca for...ever...and they only relatively recently (compared to how long .ca has been around) reduced it to $25?

OTOH, .ca is carrying so much more stuff now that I find it easier and easier to meet the shipping level.

For those who don't look around .ca much, you might be surprised at the household doo-dads that can be acquired very cheaply, often at 1/10-1/20 the price of e.g. CT/HD/WM. I am of course speaking of the vast variety of those products that come from China, that are hugely marked up at B&Ms...you can tell that they're exactly the same things without the store's "brand".

Prime is a way better deal than the free shipping for me. So nice just being able to order whatever amount and get free shipping that will arrive within two days. Most of the time I get them the next day unless they ship out of Ontario or use Canada Post instead of UPS. I wasn't sure about Prime at first but after the free trial I knew I could never go back and have been a member ever since. With all the money I spent adding stuff to boost an order to free shipping I was spending more a year than what Prime costs. Now when they had that $2.49 Hellboy 2 steelbook I was able to just order that and it showed up the next day. It went out of stock just after I ordered it so I would have missed it if I was trying to add more stuff to the order to get free shipping Plus now I can be a perv only when I want to instead of adding $6 Girls Gone Wild Blu-ray to reach free shipping

I don't place .ca orders that much so for me paying $80 bucks a year is not worth it. I place an order from amazon MAYBE once a month. Sometimes once in two months. Only when they have sales.

Otherwise I am able to find everything I'm looking for locally.

I just remember that when their threshold was $35 or 39 before I NEVER ordered a single thing. Then coming down to $25 which is more reasonable I placed a few orders. I'm sure this was the same for a few other folks.

Don't know why they'd go back to a higher threshold when the lower value clearly got them more business. They have a flat rate with Canadapost so they're not loosing money. Only expiation left is plain greed. Trying to squeeze more out of people with higher limit now.

C'est la vie amazon..

You are correct! I couldn't decide if it was $35 or $39 and was too lazy to look, so went with the lower...

The thing about "free" shipping is it's really easy for me to meet the $25 level. And speed is not an issue, since most stuff comes from Mississauga in 1-2 days. Takes 1-2 days longer from BC. Regardless, I never need stuff that fast. Do admit that once in a while there's a $10 or $20 single item I want on sale, so I keep "doo-dads" and BDs I want but aren't in a hurry for (because they're not on sale, and are most likely to drop in price long-term...) on the back-burner to throw in.

But I am older than most of you guys and am not used to "immediate" or on-demand type service for goods, I have lower expectations than younger people. Waiting is not a big deal, it's what I'm used to.

Patience is a virtue. Hee. I find that they usually deliver in 2 days or less but like you said, it takes longer if it's from BC. For me, time isn't an issue at all. I know a lot of people younger than me are often impatient and must have it in their hands immediately.

Persona is currently very cheap on Amazon.ca, does anyone know if the packaging for the Canadian editions of criterion films differ much from the US?

It should be the same as it's still a Criterion release from an alternate distributor. The Freshman is $25.

Thanks Steve, ordered!

Never seen the movie - but at $21 bucks for a Criterion Digipack release.. it's too cheap to pass up. Added Meet Joe Black for $9.99 to get free shipping

*EDIT* - strange thou - its now showing a delivery date of April 30!! God hope I dont have to wait that long.

As someone pointed out earlier - the packaging will be the same. Phase 4 films distributes for Criterion here in Canada - but they would still get the same package. Criterion has never made a separate "Canadian version" for any of their titles. Can't see them starting now.

Anyone know what this might be?

I searched online but can't find a mention of re-release for this film (The Wrestler), so this is probably just a new cover, same disc... I'm really curious, though. I'll keep it on pre-order until some more info props up. Perhaps Fox is doing a remaster?

(Although curiously, Amazon.ca lists the studio as Universal...)

Criterion:
A Hard Day's Night $26.99
The Hidden Fortress $26.99
The Freshman $24.99
L'Eclisse $27.99
All That Heaven Allows $27.99
Picnic At Hanging Rock $27.99

I'm loving these lower than usual prices for Criterion titles lately...so much easier on the wallet and less to place on my want list for the next B&N sale. I'm in for A Hard Day's Night and The Hidden Fortress.

Agreed, that and the lessening value of our CAD to USD these days make these Amazon.ca prices more appealing.

Thanks for this, Traveler! I preordered A Hard Day's Night, even though I have the Alliance edition.
