I have to say my 42 inch stand are awesome for this brings my surrouds to perfect height and I love them, for 125$ nice sturdy metal stands.

yeah but between the my seating area we have a walkway behind the chair/couch and the bookshelf, then just past the bookshelf is the dining room, so I have to have my SL and SB speaker in the bookshelf, then on the other side of the living room, to the left of the dining area is a wood chest and that is what the SR speaker is placed atop.

The SL and SB are about 7 feet apart and the SR is about 9 feet from the SB speaker because of the opening to the dining room.

There is no way I could use stands in my living room... Ill take pics one day and show you what I mean.

Yeah , I understand that, Ii said in the first place you do have to live with your room and spcace limitation, I just wanted to say that I love my stands and allow me flexible placement, I know that you are well aware of all the rules for speaker placement Steve I did not even intent to make this an open discussion about it. And i think you are doing the best you can in your situation.

I know if you had the space and the room to place your surround strategically you would do what's is absolutely the best sound wise.

have any of you noticed a change in the surround of your speakers over the years that you have owned them. my rc's elliptical surrounds were very dark with a oily feel to them when new and now they are a lighter grey without the oily feel to them. I would assume that over time ( hopefully a lot of time) they will eventually deteriorate to the point that they would start to crack. has any one ever heard of "re-conditioning" the surround to bring back that "oily" feel? is this practice even done?

I have now owned the RC so I can't tell you I know they are not using the same maerial as the C-Sries did C-series were carboard cone reinforced with fiberglass so no deterioration there, I don't know if the owner manual has a special care for the RC series maybe they put something on the cone to protect them. Seriously they are Kevlar so i don't see a major problem for deterioration. Any cone will detoriate with time.

dude, Im not at all offended or think anything of the sort, a lot of people ask me how I have my 6.1(well 2/3.1 ATM) setup, its sometimes hard for people to understand the layout of my room, so I was just trying to paint a picture. Most of the time when I have people over they cannot believe how well the rears sound with all the books on the bookshelf.

If I had a real HT room like my dad has then I would have Bi/di-poles on the walls, since Dyn doesn't have bi-poles, they do have the Audience 42 SEs that are wall mountable, but I would probably get PSB S5 bi-poles if I had the room for putting them in, or the Energy V-S and then use the Dyns for the fronts.

Fair Enough It's all good Steve, I understand how your setup is built I like 6.1 their even used to be 6.1 Receivers. Some of the movies like T2 and Top Gun are actually in 6.1 and even the LOTR.

Yeah me too 6 or 7.1 I love that, One thing I hate is the DTS_HD MA ES Matrix 6.1 my receiver detects the DTS-HD MA core but gives me 5.1 insted unless I put my BDP in Direct mode and let the BDP do the decoding. Top Gun and Reservoir Dogs it's fine and get full 6.1 and puts sound in my 2 back surround speaker as those are encoded in DTS-HD MA High Resolution 6.1.

Of course all DTS HD MA 7.1 I get the full decoding of the 7.1 just the ES Matrix suck T2 and LOTR both use this codec.

I sure can use Dolby PLx II but my receiver would process it on it's own.

That is one thing that Sonys do really well is Matrix. Because they have their own studios, the matrix software is based off of their studios setups. I dont matrix too often, but when I do, its actually really good. Next time you go to your friends house with the 2400ES have him matrix something for you if he has the setup to do it. I like the use the Cinema Studio B, have him on his remote press the "movie" button 2 times.

Yes he does it all the time and the result is great, I mean his setup is not to shabby either.

It works really well, the ES Matrix codec is well detected by my BDP S-550 so I could send LPCM over HDMI and still use the bass mangement on the receiver and I would get full 6.1 with my T2 and LOTR movies lossless. Only thing I would read LPCM instead of DTS HD MA, so what i would have the same great sound, I did not even have bass mangement over analog cables i was only able to set speaker size and not X-over on the BDP on my AVR-240 but I think it was X-over at 80hz standard and sounded just as good. I was able to enjoy lossless over Analog

You think they'd have some kind of special conditioner for the surrounds to prevent deterioration, but I couldn't find any.

"The most common problem with speakers is the deterioration of the poly-foam suspension, foam surround, or cone edge. When foam deterioration occurs, you will notice a lack of bass response and distortion from your speakers. This problem is easy to repair. Thousands of customers have installed our famous "New-Edge-It ®" speaker foam edge replacement kits to bring their speakers back to life at a fraction of the cost of new speakers."

You can get Energy foam kits here: http://www.simplyspeakers.com/energy...edge-kits.html

most of the surrounds now are rubber tho, so there isn't the deterioration that happened with the foam ones of yester-year. I think you can buy the rubber surrounds also tho if they get deformed.

Sonys video and audio processing software is excellent, everyone wants to talk crap on sony receivers, but they have the fewest bugs I ever see reported.

Hi Tim,

THe ribbed surround allow a longer more linear excursion allow the driver for more impact with the least possible distortion. It's not just for looks it was patent.

So how long have you had your new front sound stage for now ?

Are you enjoying the RC-50 and the LCR?

straight from Energys website

Ribbed Elliptical Surround
The patented Ribbed Elliptical Surrounds that encircle our products’ woofers are unlike any other. By changing the shape of the speaker surround to an ellipse, rather than the traditional “half roll,” distortion is reduced dramatically. Side benefits include increased excursion and larger piston area, allowing for greater efficiency. Our cast basket woofers also feature this technology, allowing the surround to stretch and contract as it moves, eliminating dimpling.

Energy & Mirage use these on most of their speakers.
