I got the regular release for $10. Not sure if I want to double dip for the CC.

If I don't get too sleepy (aka DRUNK .... like I said... when the cat's away ) I'll likely watch another one after that, but I can only guarantee myself one film on the night!

30 minutes until I put the kids in bed

Lucky you. Enjoy watching your stuff full volume. I'll be catching up my movies tonight in 1/2 mute to not wake the family.

It's almost useless for me to get surround sound because I can barely ever turn my stuff full volume. But when my family wants to watch Dancing With The Stars they surely turn it up full blast.

I've got lots of new titles to watch in the next week. I posted more info + picture in the sale thread, but today I picked up:
Night of the Hunter, Sweet smell of success, Close-Up, In the realm of senses, Dazed and confused, Le Beau serge, The phantom carriage and Videodrome.

Just watched Close-Up. I don't read much about it here, but it definitely deserves more attention. I loved it, it's a fascinating, raw look at social class...with some very worthwhile insights. Anyone else here like it as well?

Just ordered High & Low, Island of Lost Souls and Still Walking from the B&N sale. I'm thinking that I may also order 2 more in a week or so. Leaning towards Close-Up and Broadcast News. Anybody think I should change these 2??

There has also been a user-created Benjamin Button re-sized cover to fit the Criterion replacement cases. A user in the forum created it quite some time ago and made it available for a while. I'm sure if you do some digging you could find the conversations about it.

Either way, though, you still have to put the 2nd disc in a paper sleeve or something since Criterion doesn't have a 2-disc plastic blu-ray case.

Does anybody have the file for this? I PMed the guy who made it but he hasn't responded yet. Didn't know if someone might have it saved by chance.

Does anyone think that Kurosawa's "Stray Dog" will get released on bluray? I see it has a Japanese blu ray release, but there's not one in North America yet. I'm considering the Criterion DVD, but I have read it's picture quality is mediocre.

Has anyone purchased clear replacement blu-ray cases from Criterion store before for their paper packaging criterion blus like The Last Emperor and Third Man? If so what condition did you get yours in? Were they worn/used cases or were they new? Reason I ask is I just purchased 4 and all of them came very worn with scratches, nothing like new. One didn't even come with the cover (The Last Emperor).

This is my first purchase from them so I'm curious to see if anyone shared similar experience or was it just a fluke.

Hey guys (and girls?), first time poster, long time lurker. Big fan of cinema and Criterion for that matter. Really excited for current sale, since I'm currently indisposed for Blu-ray (had to sell my ps3) I am going to pick up some d.v.d.s that I've been wanting. But! I want to make sure that I pick up some that won't be coming to Blu for a long time, if ever. I was thinking that their last d.v.d. only release, Le enfance nue would be a good candidate....along with Louie Bluie, Letters from Fontainhas and the Josef von Sternberg boxset. Is it safe to say these won't be seeing a bluray release anytime soon? Any word of an upgrade of Do'des-kaden (I hope I got that right)? Nothing urks me more than buying a d.v.d. only for it be upgraded to blu soon afterwards. Happy watching!

Also, Criterion, if you're reading, please release James Gray's "The Yards." Thank you.

I ordered six cases from them to replace cardboard digipacks. All the cases arrived nicely packed in a box. My only problem was they sent multiple orders to me of the same thing.

Just contact them at: orders@criterion.com. They will correct the problem promptly and are very nice about doing it.

If I remember correctly the ones I ordered looked worn as well.

On another note just watched Island of Lost Souls. What a fantastic movie. Going to watch it with commentary this weekend. I really hope they can release some more classic horror movies.

First of all, welcome to the forums !

Back into your question. Everything currently available in DVD (With this I mean it is not in BD yet and/or already went OOP) has a possibility of making the jump the BD. If you avoid generally popular titles (Films like Andrei Rublev and Taste of Cherry which will probably get upgrades soon based solely on demand) and single releases, I think your best bet is with most DVD boxsets. Here are some films I don't expect to see upgraded anytime soon (Or at least not to my knowledge) which also are great choices:

- Berlin Alexanderplatz by Reiner Werner Fassbinder
- Roberto Rossellini's War Trilogy by Roberto Rossellini
- 3 Silent Classics by Josef von Sternberg by von Sternberg
- John Cassavetes: Five Films by John Cassavetes

Those are only some of the most essential options but you can also delve into Criterion's Eclipse Series. Those films are definitely going to stay as DVDs for a while and most of them are fantastic anthologies. Let's hope I was from help .

It was an easy for choice me melo4mvp. First up was Head, which I hadn't seen since it's original late 60s theatrical release, which I recalled liking (admiring?) more than any movie with the Monkees in it deserved. I followed that with Drive, He Said, for much the same reason, minus the Monkees. Then A Safe Place because I'd never seen it at all, and with Welles involved (even late career, bloated and beaten down), that one seemed intriguing to the 'completist' in me. Finally I watched The Last Picture Show , simply because it's such a superb film, which I return to every 5 years or so, and never seem to tire of. Then I quietly put the set away for no specific reason. Still to come: Easy Rider and Five Easy Pieces, which I'm sure I'll get around to...well...someday, although neither is among my favourites from the period.

I was surprised : I have been able to order empty cases to ship to France. And the shipping fees weren't that expensive, but, in the end, it was bout $30 for 10 cases.
They arrived real quickly. In fact, 1 or 2 had some scratches on the plastic sleeve, but I think it is due to the delivery.

As for the DVDs boxsets from Criterion, for me, the absolute must have is the Cassavetes set (for which I was wondering if a BD upgrade would be interesting technically speaking).
It is probably my most cherished piece of all sets I bought in my life.
