I hate to say it, considering how much I adore Lord of the Rings, but I curse Peter Jackson for starting this new AI upscaling BS with his documentaries (which I've always thought looked like garbage, even as everybody was "oohing" and "aahing" them).

The LOTR, THT, a few documentaries, and Avatar were sacrificed in order to deep learn how not to be as bad with Titanic, The Abyss, TL, and Aliens.

LoLz. Wholly NGMO OCN original film grain indeed.

I'm sure someone will be able to do a comparison, but I can't at the moment as I don't have it ripped to my hard drive.

Of course when things are in motion detail goes down, but here the processing is turning people into digi doubles

I stopped obsessing about such things years ago. There has to be some compromise otherwise it can turn into an obsession and take away from the whole point of this hobby, enjoyment.

90% of 4K discs look pretty great to me, they also sound fantastic. I can live with a few imperfections.

Peter Jackson got a log of flack from many historians for his They Shall Not Grow Old doc. DNR was the least of the problems regarding all the manipulation he did with that footage, to the point that many historians lamented that Peter Jackson was the one to get access to all that priceless historical footage, only to destroy its authenticity and making stuff up, such as in any colorization process, changing aspect ratios, and more to deliver spectacle. It's not history anymore.

This! I buy the gear that I do so that I can see whatever is released as well as I can afford to. Mine arrives tomorrow, probably won't be able to watch until Saturday. My low brow thoughts will follow. Mark your calendars...

2012 Bluray screenshot (it kinda looks pretty much the same to me, though the grain is far better on the bluray) :

Looks great to me. Granted, I don't watch movies by freeze framing shots and counting the individual grain. In fact, I started watching the UHD disc Tuesday night and caught myself looking for things to criticize. About 20 minutes in, I was so immersed in the spectacle and story that I just went on the ride. Some of yall should try it sometime, it's cathartic.

I think that film is a different animal entirely. The footage was from hand-cranked cameras that had no set frame rate, and the film had no green sensitivity which left almost no detail in the environments. The purpose of it was more to create a story and bring the footage closer to what modern audiences expect (smooth frame rate, color, higher detail, etc.) rather than presenting the footage as a museum piece. I agree it looks waxy but the originals were extremely rough, and it was never meant to be a library of unaltered war footage. It also allowed those libraries and archives to have that material properly scanned for digital archival which is a win in my opinion.

Funny, I always watch the movies and observe issues and then share certain examples.

Saw The Abyss last night in the theater and saw issues due to the Kiwi Special Sauce AI Processing. Accomplished without freeze framing but yes do bang on.

Can you stop already?

Just watch it FFS and decide for yourself if you like it.

Me too, but did you count the grain, view through color filter glasses, or consult your completely reliable memory of the 35mm screening you saw in 1998? If you did, you'd know the UHD is full of evil AI and processing.

Neither do I. My disappointment comes from watching the film in motion, at normal viewing distance.

I can do that with the Blu-ray, the DVD, hell probably even the damn VHS.

Can we stop doing this particular song and dance?

Not every 4k release needs to be Citizen Kane.

*sigh*

Again...this is not about the release needing to be the reference of all reference discs.

This is about it being true to its source. And not plagued with DNR, Edge Enhancement, A.I. upscaling, etc.

Plenty of other releases manage it somehow.

I agree with your sentiments toward this release and people trying to shut down any criticism. I was just being sarcastic.
