IIRC, in an interview Amazon founder Jeff Bezos said he believed Amazon would only last 20 to 30 years at the top. What it would be replaced with is the big question.

One would think Walmart purchased Vudu believing it would be a revenue source for them. Apparently it did not preform as predicted therefore they sold it. Interesting the the terms of the deal was not made public.

not sure what technical write up you are expecting. MS job is to sell ad space and code each ad appropriately (i.e. you don't want to show condom ad during kid show because parents will get PO, don't show ad during controversial show/movie because the company paying for the ad will be PO)

the rest should be simple for example it could be every X minutes pause film and ask ad server for 4 ads to send.

Do you think this site has complex coding for what ads show up where and when? ads are everywhere now. if you are in HD forums it knows to show HD movies, if you go to PS it knows to show PS games, 4k forums k ads.

Start with the obvious question: Why does Netflix make many transcoded versions of each movie?

see
https://www.geeksforgeeks.org/system...-architecture/

Quote:
Netflix also creates file optimization for different network speeds. The quality of a video is good when you’re watching the video at high network speed. Netflix creates multiple replicas (approx 1100-1200) for the same movie with different resolutions. These replicas require a lot of transcoding and preprocessing. Netflix breaks the original video into different smaller chunks and using parallel workers in AWS it converts these chunks into different formats (like mp4, 3gp, etc) across different resolutions (like 4k, 1080p, and more).

After transcoding, once we have multiple copies of the files for the same movie, these files are transferred to each and every Open Connect server which is placed in different locations across the world.
https://netflixtechblog.com/high-qua...e-d159db052746

Amazon AWS example
Quote:
AWS Elemental MediaTailor channel assembly is a manifest-only service that allows you to create linear streaming channels using your existing video on demand (VOD) content. MediaTailor never touches your content segments, which are served directly from your origin server. Instead, MediaTailor fetches the manifests from your origin, and uses them to assemble a live sliding manifest window that references the underlying content segments.
So MS is being used to do something similar.

we are on the same page on how everything none-ad related works.

But I don't get your point at all,

We are not talking content or content segments or content quality we are talking about ads. the content stops, the ads play, the content continues to play from where they stopped before the ads when the ads are done. They are two different processes that hand shake together when the right time comes.

how do you think You8tube or Disney or Hulu or every other ad supported service does it? Netflix did not just invent this "show ads during streaming" they are just now jumping on the bandwagon because people are leaving in droves for cheaper services.

I really don't get where you see this complexity.

ps the only difference between Youtube and this is that the person that posts the video can decide where, when and how many ads play while here it is Netflix so it does not need to be on a title by title basis with exact positioning.

Well no one should be complacent Time and Technology moves on, Oppo and Samsung are out of the Blu-ray, 4K Player Market. So you only have two Major Companies Panasonic and Sony. With only one Disc Duplication Facility left in North America, Mexico, Streaming Digital is looking way better than Physical!

Panasonic is not a major company. LG makes players even if they aren't the best quality and far larger company. Then there is Tascam, which is professional audio division of TEAC Corporation that sells 4K UHD players to consumers. Phillips which is a very large company sells Blu-Ray players. I am not going to bother listing some of the minor producers of players that are made in China that are not targeting consumers but rather pretending to be equivalents of Oppo players and selling their products for too much.

Picked up these used $10 each but both were sealed with slipcovers and redeemable 4K digital copies.

There were several other DC Animated 4K discs there so if I like Catwoman maybe I'll go back and see if any are still there.

Have these arriving tomorrow from Amazon's recent sale.

So much fun collecting UHD BDs !

Interesting how some is willing to show their ignorance . 9 UHD BD players here. Then we have Reavon, may not be a Oppo but if in the market I would look more closely at their players.

That is complete and utter BS and you know it. You made that post thinking you would be cute. Then try to play the innocent victim when called out, sorry, that dog want hunt.

It has been posted several times there have been 4 new models of UHD Blu-ray players introduced since the departure of Oppo and Samsung. I have mentioned Reavon in 10 different post in this very thread. But just for your benefit:

As posted earlier we have 3 newer models form Reavon and one new model from Tascam.

I noticed in my local AV store that they had the Reavon UBR-X100 player for £799.

https://www.spatialonline.co.uk/coll...blu-ray-player

I'm currently using Sony's (I recently bought another UBP X-800M2) at Spatial's and judging by the price, I suspect the Reavon's are superior. It's certainly a beautiful looking machine with a performance to match, I dare say. They also advertise the Reavon X200, but they were waiting for stock to come in the last time I was there - I've no idea how much that one costs.

Edit: I've only just noticed that Steedeel has been banned.

Hopefully not permanently. I've been thinking of buying a second Sony player as a backup too.

Bet it's temporary.

Looks like his most recent postings were in the Halloween Ends thread where I don't want to investigate due to spoilers.

BJ's Wholesale Club On the disc server notion.....

Penquininfinity has mentioned from time to time that optical discs outlast hard drives and even suggested buying discs is cheaper than making files. Having done both for a long time, I completely see his point of view.

My 40TB server started glitching so I shut it down.

BackBlaze does hard drive longevity research and says this ....

Generally speaking, you can rely on your hard drive for three to five years on average. A compelling study that proved this statistic comes from the online backup company Backblaze who analyzed the failure rates of 25,000 running hard drives. They found that 90% of hard drives survive for three years and 80% for four years. But this number varied across brands. Western Digital and Hitachi hard drives lasted much longer than Seagate’s in Backblaze’s study.

I felt good about shutting down my own server because of the energy savings but bad about the fact that I spent money on it. The last time I purchased hard drives was 2016 so they are definitely out of the predicted lifespan.

So I've gone back to my disc player (UB9000) and still have my online streamer (ATV4K) and for me that's all I need.

I am fortunate that I have room for stuff including enough room to have my collection organized for easy access.

You forgot about the Playstation 5 and the Xbox Series X. Both of those play Blu-ray's and UHD's. The Xbox has sold 15 million units globally as of June 22 and the Playstation 5 has sold 21.4 million globally as of July 22. That is 36.4 million optical disc players in the wild, not counting the stand alone players. That's a pretty hefty install base.

And streaming will never look better than the equivalent physical disc.

Discs look and sound better than streaming while still being affordable.

You are really missing out on the best format for home video that ever existed.

However many duplication facilities exist, .... there's so many great new releases !

Time and Technology moving on could mean so many things. I expect it means higher prices and more ads for streaming content. Introduce a ad based studio subscription plan to get the numbers up and then raise prices of all the plans ... it's too easy.

For me, Sony have always proved to be very reliable, and over the years I've also owned several Sony DVD players and VHS recorders - I honestly don't recall having any problems with any of them. However my first VHS recorder from about 1985 which was a Philips, dear lord, I could tell you a few stories about that one.
