the 'plug and play' people ruin the online game. they lag everything down.
now is the time to fix your settings.

open up all the ports = the solution.....very simple yet people wont do it AND they keep complaining!
Meh, I did all that day 1 and I still regularly see my PS3 lose connection to my server or the PS network. There seems to be an incompatibility with some wireless routers (I have a Linksys WRTXXX) and the PS3's wireless connection.

Mine even takes it a step further- when I fire it up it kills all other wireless connections for about 5 seconds. If I'm downloading something on a laptop or working from home over VPN, I'll see the connection terminated every time it goes to the Xross GUI.

There's more to it than just throwing it in your DMZ (which I've done but I'll say that I don't think it's a good idea). I do tech support for a living so all this is normal for me, but there's something in the way that the PS3 uses the DNS settings- I've left them to autoconfigure and I've inputted them in manually, and it still does the same thing. NEVER have I seen a piece of hardware consistently kill a network like that.

enabling DMZ will open up every port to the static ip that you direct it to

*if you disable DMZ and its NOT the ps3 static ip....your pc will get hacked
only the ps3 static ip goes into DMZ ip address

You do realize that its an intermittent issue as well as just recently started to occur to a large majority of PSN users?

What you are suggesting is not going to work for the people that are just now starting to get this error.

i have a linksys wrt54g wirelsss router with a wireless laptop & reg pc on my connection. plus a hub for the upstairs xbox 360 & ps2 in my sons room

when i was wireless i NEVER had an issue of other wireless signals going out.
you may need to change the wireless signal to channel 1, 6 or 11 (it should be on 6 by default)

does this happen during a certain game or what?
did you go thru 'automatic' dns detection or you inderted them manually?

dmz = it opens up all the ports.....just make sure your ps3 static ip last 2 #s are ABOVE 50

Why would the internet provider be at fault? Assuming that you have a strong wireless or wired connection, any kind of DNS failure would hit you across the board. I'll be surfing on the laptop and we'll have the PS3 on and I'll see the error message pop up, yet there's no issue on the laptop's wireless.

It's an issue with the PS3's hardware/software and the fact that it doesn't play nice with some routers.

Channel was on 11 the day I set it up. I know about avoiding other wireless networks in my neighborhood. I know about DMZ- it leaves it open to EVERYTHING. I know about creating a static IP outside of your DHCP range. I set up the DNS manually, though I have tried automatic as well as a troubleshooting step.

I really don't play games online so it's not something that I'm dying about, but this occurs when I'm at the Xross Media Bar GUI. I'll occasionally lose connection to the PS network or my server upstairs.

is this associated then with a certain ps3 model (40gb, 60gb, 80gb etc)

either way people should set their dmz to the ps3 static ip address

has everyone tried resetting/unplugging their router/modem for 5 minutes then restarting them?

60gb PS3 did reset/unplug router and modem. And it worked until I shut off the PS3. Then had to do it again. Had to reset every time over the weekend.

I have a 40gb model.

Yeah, I did the routine of unplug the modem and router and then plug them back sequentially a few minutes each time to try and get the DNS to do it's thing. (non nerd speak).

Mine's a 40gb. I've reset my modem/router on occasion, but typically do not for this issue as honestly, it clears itself up within a couple of minutes.

Overall, it's really odd but since I primarily use mine for movies and SP games, it's not enough of an issue for me to mess with further. I did read somewhere where someone suggested swapping the order of the DNS addresses and that helped them. That's an easy enough thing to try and will be next for me to give a go to.

LOL @ the goat comment

you have a 40gb ps3?

Well sorry man! But for me its not that damn simple! Dont know anything about this tech crap! Last time I tried ``fixing““ it to play CoD3 it sure didnt work and my internet connection didnt work either for an amount of time.. And besides it should be necessary for everyone to get into this just to play online! Sony's responsibility!
- and yes my PS3 just started giving me that DNS error thing right now

Try this:

Go onto one of your home pc's. Go to Start > Run and type "Cmd" and press enter. Type "ipconfig" and press enter. Write down the IP address, the DNS addresses. Go into Sony's GUI and create an IP address that matches the computer's first three octets- for example if it's 168.199.1.100 you would use 168.199.1.XXX where XXX= a higher number- I'd suggest at least 50 above your pc's to avoid the DHCP range. Copy in your DNS settings.

It may help, or may not. But what it'll do is provide a static IP so it won't keep searching out for one every time the lease expires.

I've had the issues since I got it and I regularly update. I'd like to think I'm pretty savvy with the tech (sounds like you are too) and it's just not any one thing.
